What is Super Hockey Ball ?
Street hockey in virtual reality!
Super Hockey Ball is an explosive sports/adventure experience featuring intuitive controls, physics-based gameplay, and cartoon-inspired design.
Hit a ball. Earn points. Be a superstar!
So, why Super Hockey Ball ?
Through our careful research, we’ve discovered that reality is boring. So, instead of just emulating reality, Super Hockey Ball makes it better. Plus, playing with a ball is awesome!
What is there to do in the game?
We’ve boiled things down to the basics. You won't be picking up random objects just because you can. You won't be shooting at zombies or robots. There are plenty of experiences that offer those things. Instead, you'll be hitting a ball with a stick. Because, quite simply, it's fun!
You'll run around in a cartoon-inspired environment, controlling your ball like a pro, while breaking targets and earning points.
Any cool, impressive, or unique features do you want to brag about?
- Targeted Locomotion (never lose the ball / use both hands freely without interrupting your movement)
- Dynamic Hockey Stick (feel the ball, drag your stick along the ground, and control your stick naturally with both hands)
Roomscale Blocking (players can never walk through virtual walls/objects by moving in their real, physical room)
- Direction Compensating Menus (always start the game facing the correct direction, regardless of which way you're facing in real-life)
Semi-procedural Level Design (clouds, trees, bushes, and other objects are different every time you play)
- Speed Lines (run fast, while reducing the nausea you might experience in other games. not guaranteed for everyone, but it helps many people!)
How about your basic VR features?
- Variety of locomotion options (hand oriented, head oriented, etc.)
- Variety of turning options (snap, smooth)
- Full roomscale support
- SteamVR/Vive support
- Oculus Rift support
- Google Resonance Audio spatialization
- Optimized performance
- Fully physics-based gameplay
- Nuanced VR interactions
- UX focused design
- And plenty more!
What's the current state of development?
We have a playable game with innovative features, like Targeted Locomotion. We've already poured thousands of dollars and thousands of hours into developing Super Hockey Ball. You could say we're pretty invested. And we're committed to producing a high-quality experience that pushes VR forward.
If our Kickstarter isn't successful, Super Hockey Ball will still be released.
But, with your help, it'll be a much better game! The Super Hockey Ball page is live on Steam. We're prepared to launch on the Oculus store. You can grab the demo on itch.io right now. And Windows Mixed Reality support is almost ready. We've even established a business relationship with Sony, so we can explore development for PSVR.
We were recently accepted to Oculus Start, which is a program designed to help indie developers create quality experiences for Oculus Rift!
What features are in development right now?
- Variety of hockey sticks
- Windows Mixed Reality support
- More environments
- More game modes (Suburban Golf, Bowling, a tutorial, etc)
- More detailed character customization
- Improved artwork
- Additional music and sound effects
- Full VR Body support
Great! Where can I buy it?
Super Hockey Ball will be available on Steam, Oculus, and (eventually) PSVR. Soon after this Kickstarter campaign, we plan to launch into Early Access on Steam. Following that, we'll be launching on the Oculus store as well. Once everything is looking cozy, we'll start working tirelessly to port the game to PSVR.
We dream of playing on every platform!
What features are you dreaming of?
Multiplayer (in some form)
- PSVR support
- Full length campaign/story mode
- Actual, competitive hockey games
Not every feature will make it into the final game. But rest assured that we're going to squeeze in everything we can.
Goal #1 - $2,500
Our baseline goal is small. It also only provides us with a small benefit. From this goal, we'll get a little bit of publicity. We'll be able to run a few ads and keep the project alive while we complete the basic necessities. Nothing grandiose will come from this. But you'll be able to see the game release into Early Access on Steam, hopefully before the end of the fall!
Goal #2 - $5,000
Ok, now we're talking. At $5,000, we'll have enough money to pick up a few necessities. This will help us devote some resources to porting the game to PSVR, which is our dream.
Goal #3 - $10,000
With ten grand, we'll have the funding necessary to market the game a little more heavily. We'll be able to go out to some conventions and really show off the features of Super Hockey Ball to the public. This will help us design a nice booth, buy a laptop for demonstrations, and cover our travel and lodging expenses.
Goal #4 - $50,000
If we can hit this mark, we might actually have to delay the game a little longer. Don't worry, that's a good thing! That's because we'd use the funds to contract an artist to help improve the aesthetic of the game. It looks decent right now, but for $50k, you'll expect more from us. Even if you don't, which would be quite nice of you, we'll expect more from ourselves.
Goal #5 - Money is no object
We want to create a competitive online multiplayer mode for Super Hockey Ball. Most of the fundamentals are already in place. But we'd love to work with experienced network engineers to smooth out the gameplay and make it a truly impressive experience. There's no money tied to this goal, because we can't quantify it that way. This is a stretch goal, because the last thing we want to do is make yet another VR game based around multiplayer without a playerbase. When we do multiplayer, we want to do it well. So, we're not making any promises. It's entirely possible that Super Hockey Ball will always be a single-player experience.

Risks and challenges
All that sounds great, but there are a few challenges. At the moment, it's still expensive to get into VR gaming. Users need a high-end computer, a VR headset, and enough space to play. Due to the costs, there simply aren't a ton of users (yet). So, our sales potential is more limited than it would be for a traditional developer.
But this also means there's an opportunity! There currently aren't enough users to justify huge investments or AAA development team costs. Make no mistake, though, those major developers will bring their products to VR eventually. In the meantime, there is a lack of quality content for current VR users. Smaller studios and production teams have a short window of opportunity to succeed. Therefore, Super Hockey Ball needs to finish soon and get out ahead of the major studios.
We want Super Hockey Ball to look fantastic! It needs strong visuals, but good artwork is not easy or cheap. We've done all the art in-house so far. This takes time away from other development efforts. We want to contract a skilled 3D modeler, as well as an expert in rigging and animation.
The most important use of funds will be marketing and advertising. We need to make sure everyone knows about Super Hockey Ball. That means ads. It means attending conventions. For most conventions, it will cost us a couple thousand dollars to get a booth and cover our travel/lodging expenses. Is that worth it? Absolutely! At events recently, attendance has grown to more than 80,000 people. That's a lot of eyes. And we want them all focused on Super Hockey Ball!
While we could release this game on our own... we'd love your support. Let's make a better game together!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
