About

The Problem

Every year we waste millions of gallons of water while waiting for the shower or bath to heat up. 

  • Structural water waste:many homes have inefficient hot water delivery systems. 
  • Behavioral water waste: few people will stand in a cold shower, and even fewer will take the time and effort to collect the water wasted as the shower heats up. Millions of gallons of clean water flow down the drain as individuals wait for the right temperature before jumping in to begin that perfect shower or bath.

In one household, the potential waste amounts to nearly 1,059 gallons per year, per shower. Which is about an average of 2.9 gallons of water waste for every shower an individual takes.

Our goal is to stop this needless waste by helping everyone save water! The clean and usable water that flows down the drain everyday can be recovered before it is ever lost. We are turning inefficiency and waste into productivity and savings!

The Solution

The Water Utility Preservation Instrument (WUPI) is a system designed to recover and reuse water that would otherwise be wasted as it flows down the drain. The system comprises a patent pending valve housing designed to capture and conserve cold water while the shower heats up.

How The System Works

As shown below, the valve housing attaches at the base of the shower fixture. While the shower heats up, cold water is diverted to a collection tank. When the water heats up to the right temperature, a valve opens and allows the shower to flow. The water you collect and save can be used to clean, water houseplants, irrigate the garden outside, refill your pet’s water dish, or even flush the toilet. With the WUPI installed, a user steps into a hot shower as soon as the water starts running. The only difference in shower routine is the convenience in knowing that once the shower starts running, typically after a brief delay of 15 seconds, the water will be hot and ready. After stepping out, the user will have conserved upwards of 3 gallons of clean water!

A New Approach to Saving Water

The Water Utility Preservation Instrument (WUPI) is designed by property developers and members of the residential construction industry. With the help of engineers, designers, and manufacturers, we set out to develop a new approach to reusing and saving water. To accomplish this goal, we tackle two major problems in residential hot water delivery:

  • Stopping structural Waste: Hot water delivery is inefficient and wasteful, especially in older homes. Many other solutions out there involve reheating water which is then recirculated back into the inefficient system. This is a waste of energy. To solve these problems, and combat the inherent inefficiency of older hot water delivery systems, the WUPI is designed to work with any standard shower head. The proprietary valve housing mounts at the base of any shower fixture. Best of all, installation is simple. There is no need to purchase a new shower. The best way to combat the structural water waste is not to renovate an entire system, but rather to create a solution that addresses the problem in a creative and cost effective manner.
  • Stopping behavioral Waste: People are resistant to change. To address this hurdle we have created a system that functions automatically. The WUPI is designed to engage at 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average shower temperature is around 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The 80 degree start point offers the user the freedom to adjust the shower temperature well above, or below, the average shower temperature of 105 degrees, while still saving water waste. The days of turning on the shower and waiting for the water to heat up are over. 

Our Accomplishments

The first prototype, dubbed the “P-One”, was designed and engineered in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The P-one is our test-bed development platform. We use the P-One to conduct research and to collect data on water usage. The platform is compact and easily attaches to most residential hot water sources, making testing and data collection simple and straightforward. 

The success of the P-One led to the development of our second WUPI prototype, the “P-Two.” The P-Two, pictured below, is a refined and compact version our first design. The P-Two is currently slated for manufacture. Those who back our project at the second tier will receive a fully functional and ready to use WUPI system based on the P-Two design by the Second quarter of 2016. We are proud of the countless hours that we have poured into the P-One and P-Two. Our pride is reflected in the craftsmanship of the system, and in its effectiveness as a water conservation tool.

The Future

The future of the WUPI is bright and exciting. Your contribution and backing will help us, both in bringing an amazing and transformational product to the market, as well as in continuing to meet the challenges noted above. We see the future of the WUPI as the future of water conservation, not only in the United States and Europe, but also in developing countries where the scarcity of clean and potable water is a current threat to health. As described or below, we have ambitious, yet attainable, goals for the future. These goals include the following:

  • Interactive Monitoring and Smart Home Compatibility: We plan to work with development partners to integrate interactive monitoring features and smart home compatibility into future iterations of the WUPI. By embedding future iterations of the WUPI with sensors, software, and network connectivity, we will ensure the system’s ability to communicate with and exchange data with other utility technologies in an individual’s home. We know the visual impact of seeing the WUPI water tank fill up after every use has a positive effect on an individual’s water conservation behavior. Integrating the WUPI with “The Internet of Things” will increase the potential user’s motivation to conserve water by allowing him or her to observe the water savings achieved in a meaningful digital context. Imagine receiving a notification communicating how much water has been saved in a given period, and imagine the WUPI actively working with other systems in a home to increase efficiency and affect water savings.
  • Democratization of Our Data and Research: In addition with the monthly news letter offered at the first tier backing level, we aim to provide a quarterly report aggregating our research and data in an interactive and accessible format. Our goal is to democratize access to information about structural and behavioral water waste by making that information widely available.

  • Creation of a Hardware Exchange Program: We believe in an active and ongoing commitment to customer service. We view our backers and users as partners in conservation, and not merely as customers. With this perspective in mind, our future goal is to develop a hardware exchange program whereby users can turn in older iterations of the WUPI and receive updated versions of the product for free. The hardware received though this program would be refurbished, reconditioned, and distributed at a prorated cost to communities in need and to emerging global markets. We believe global distribution of the WUPI, and similar technologies, is a crucial component of water conservation. Developing countries in the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and Africa hold a unique advantage from an infrastructural standpoint. Imagine a world where allowing over two gallons of water to flow down a drain before stepping into a shower is not even a consideration. That world is possible as eco friendly development and urbanization flourish in newly emerging global markets. Our goal is to be at the forefront of this development, and to ensure water conservation is on the mind of every developer, builder, and homeowner around the globe.

Risks and challenges

We have put tremendous effort (research, engineering, design, and development) into the WUPI. The road ahead is bright, but not without its minor bumps and curves. The challenges remaining include the following:

1) Scaling production of the WUPI (our aim is to bring the WUPI to mass production without sacrificing the quality and craftsmanship of the product)

2) Marketing the WUPI in locations where the product will have the most impact (we want to bring the WUPI to big box retailers and wholesalers nation wide, but also make it accessible to developing markets)

3) Continuing research and development of the WUPI (our long term goal involves integrating the WUPI into a larger product development model based around global water conservation)

4) Expanding our educational and conservation based outreach efforts (educating the public about the necessity of water conservation is an important task, and we see it as our mission to undertake this task with the utmost sincerity and resolve).
