AUSTRALIA'S FIRST CERTIFIED SPF 50 natural reef safe sunscreen packaged in tin 🥇
We are marine biologists who took a stand for better suncare. We realised two years ago that if we wanted high quality chemical free sunblock that wouldn't pollute our oceans we needed to make it ourselves.
So our journey began with 5 handmade products, to nurture our skin and not harm the sea.
We made it for ourselves, then friends wanted it, then businesses wanted to stock us! The success of our small business inspired us to go bigger. Could we dare change the Sun Smart message to include Environmentally and Ethically Smart without compromising on high quality sunscreen? Every tin we sold reminded us of the people out there who wanted this as much as we did.
So we stayed true to the mission. Now 2 years have gone by and we've created a product that will change the way we see suncare ::
"Natural" "Mineral" "Chemical Free" :: What does it all mean?
Let's break it down.
There are two types of sunscreen, PHYSICAL and CHEMICAL.
PHYSICAL SUNSCREEN is often referred to as "mineral" or "natural" and are the zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide UV blockers. They are called physical because they sit on top of the skin and reflect the sun's rays like a mirror. These blockers are also referred to as "natural" because they occur in nature and aren't made in a laboratory. They do not penetrate the skin, giving broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and have the lowest toxicity concern of any of the UV blockers known today 🙌🏼 Physical sunscreen is the best choice for sensitive skin as it is less likely to cause irritation. Also, as soon as it is applied it is acting to protect your skin from the sun, so there’s no need to wait before you can expose yourself... to the sunshine ☀️😉
CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS use synthetic chemicals created in laboratories such as oxybenzone and octinoxate as their UV blockers. These get absorbed into the skin, hence the usual advice to apply 20 minutes before sun exposure. They absorb UV light like a sponge. Each chemical works in a narrow UV spectrum, that's why multiple chemicals are needed to protect the skin properly and you end up with an ingredients list as long as your forearm of words you can hardly pronounce. What most people don’t know is that chemical sunscreen may cause the eyes to sting, clog the pores, increase redness, brown spots or discolouration of your skin. Furthermore, published research has shown chemical sunscreen to disrupt hormones and generate free radicals inside the skin 🤭
SAVE OUR BODIES :: OXYBENZONE IN OUR BLOOD
In America the Center for Disease Control and Prevention routinely detect oxybenzone in more than 96 percent of people. Once in our blood it's not just our problem, it gets passed on to our children. Researchers have found chemical UV filters in 85% of women's milk samples, indicating that the developing foetus and newborns may be exposed to these substances (Schlumpf 2008, Schlumpf 2010).
So what's the problem with it in our bodies? Several common chemical filters appear to be endocrine disruptors. The most unnerving research comes from the National Institute of Health in New York, who found a link between poorer reproductive success in men and high exposure to certain chemicals in sunscreen. Men with greater exposure to UV blockers benzophenone-2 and/or 4-hydroxyoxybenzone had poorer sperm quality (Louis 2015) and reported that it took longer for their partners to conceive (Buck-Louis 2014).
Well it's tough on the guys who use chemical sunscreen, but the ladies don't get away lightly either! Appart from passing on the chemicals to our children, it has been reported that females have an increased risk of developing endometriosis with exposures to oxybenzone and related chemicals (Kunisue 2012).
SAVE OUR SEAS :: 14,000 TONNES OF CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN IS WASHED OFF BATHERS INTO CORAL REEF SYSTEMS EVERY YEAR.
On May 1, 2018, Hawaii became the first state to pass a bill banning the sale of chemical sunscreens. As it turns out, chemical UV blockers like oxybenzone and octinoxate contribute to coral bleaching and they are harmful to ocean ecosystems 🐠🐬🐋🦈
KNOWN CHEMICAL OFFENDERS AND WHAT THEY DO TO CORALS:
Oxybenzone is responsible for deformations in coral tissue causing larvae to die by encasing themselves in their own skeleton (Downs, 2015) ☠️
Other common ingredients found in chemical sunscreens such as, Butylparaben, Octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor can cause viruses that live inside the corals symbiotic algae to replicate uncontrollably until they explode killing the algae and causing the coral to bleach ☠️
Nano particles are microscopic particles sometimes used in sunscreens and cosmetics that can penetrate your skin cells. Once ingested into the cells these particles can cause oxidative stress and free radical activity in sunlight. If they then pass into our waterways they can have the same effect on other animals and organisms ☠️
Goodness is about quality not quantity when it comes to food, adventure, friends and sunscreen! So firstly in our formula we have considered what sun kissed skin needs: Core ingredients with natural healing and restorative properties 🌱 We're not trying to impress people with how many herbs and spices we can fit in our formula - your skin isn't a slow cooked masala, we prefer the approach less is more, as long as less is from the BEST. Secondly, having fewer ingredients means less runoff of different substances into our waterways and less uncertainty of sustainability through the life cycle of every ingredient.
That's why SunButter Sunscreen has been formulated to contain non-nano particle zinc oxide, which blocks both UVA and UVB rays and lends superior restorative and nurturing qualities for sensitive and/or weathered skin. We use several derivatives of coconut oil to aid in spreadability and skin hydration. Castor oil for it’s anti inflammatory properties and it's ability to help reduce acne prone skin. Plus vitamin E for its ability to improve skin elasticity and collagen production 🌻
KIS. Keep It Simple. Your skin will thank you for it and so will the planet 😁🌏
If our goal is to reduce chemical sunscreen pollution, we believe we also have to address plastic pollution, right?! That's why we chose to package our product in reusable and recyclable tins. They even have all their information printed directly on to reduce the plastic waste from stickers. We climbed a mountain of NO's until we got one YES, and that was all we needed to bring this packaging to life 💪🏼😎
Did you know many cosmetics packaged in plastic are made of containers using 5 layers of different types of plastic (therefore not recyclable)... 😖
Back in the 70's, David Bowie may have put on the old physical sunscreens to find it left a white cast after application, making his face look paler than his neck or leaving a white residue on his skin. I'm sure Bowie would have somehow pulled it off as one of his iconic and captivating beauty looks. Not you or me though 🙈 Thankfully, those ghost face sunscreens are history, we have finally solved the riddle of how to formulate safe and natural zinc oxide and coconut solutions that diffuse the SPF evenly without compromising silky smooth, luxury textures or creating a white old school coverage.

SunButter Oceans was founded by a young couple, Tom from England and Sacha from Melbourne, as a solution to the problem of chemical sunscreen pollution. The pair began by hand-making SunButter sunblock on the Ningaloo Reef, Western Australian for the whale shark guides, photographers, spearo's, divers and fishermen.
So what about before SunButter was even a twinkle in the pairs eyes, before the pair had even met? Tom ditched his place at London's School of Economics to become a dive master and travel the world. He managed a conservation island in the Seychelles before becoming a naturalist guide, with a particular speciality in coral reef restoration 🐠 Sacha jumped from engineering to marine biology, whilst always carrying a special spot in her heart for living a natural, healthy, organic lifestyle. Growing up, Sacha's Swiss mother instilled in her the powerful benefits of natural-healing by treating ailments from colds, to cuts, to skin allergies with herbal remedies 🌿 The combined life experience of Tom and Sacha has made the perfect collaboration for product development of high quality natural sunscreen with a strong focus on giving back to the planet where it is most needed 🙏🏼🌏

It was a simple idea we thought could be achieved in six months 💡 Wrong. You see in Australia, sunscreen falls in the same category as medicine. Regulations under the Australian Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA) state that SPF certification can only be claimed by products made in TGA approved facilities, therefore we could not claim our hand made products to have an SPF, even though they had been tested. We always say, one must accept the challenges so you can feel the acceleration of victory. So after two years of working with pharmacists to source the most ethical, environmentally sustainable and non-toxic ingredients, we are ready to launch our TGA certified SPF50 chemical free sunscreen. JOIN US in taking it to the nation and be part of our suncare revolution 😎🥳☀️
