About

The Big Picture

Sumac is more than just a food magazine, it's a whole community that aims to appreciate life, in all its wild diversity, through the lens of humanity's most basic, common ritual: sharing food and drink. In a world that's full of barriers, we want to tear down walls by breaking bread with strangers through the medium of a handsome 128 page print magazine full of stories from fascinating humans from around the planet.

A Rose By Any Other Name

To some, the name Sumac evokes memories of North America's most poisonous plant. But the true origin of our magazine's name is that nefarious shrub's close cousin—a red-berried variety that produces one of the Middle East's most delicious, zesty spices. In sharing the experiences of our Turkish Editor in Chief's sumac spice-fueled nostalgia for home-cooked meals along the Mediterranean seaside, with our New York-born Managing Director's poison sumac-induced memories of sylvan childhood trauma, we illustrate the exact purpose of Sumac Magazine. By telling the story of a tangy berry and it's evil twin, we unlock tales of childhood memories that span oceans and connect cultures. Oh, and it goes very will with rice pilaf! The Turkish spice variety, that is...

Sumac, the Spice
Sumac, the Spice

Amuse-Bouches

Our first issue covers a wide array of human experiences. We share a home cooked meal with a young Hasidic couple and learn what happens when a rabbi finds God through LSD. We meet a community of gender flexible New Yorkers who tell us, over beet hummus and vegan paella, what it means to find liberation in rejecting social norms.

We dive deep into the hidden cuisines of refugees worldwide. We talk about the #metoo movement and sexual harassment in the restaurant business with acclaimed journalist Tina Brown. And we share a bite with culture-changing influencers like artist-musician Casey Spooner and Asia Kate Dillon from Billions and Orange Is the New Black.

We uncover the hidden rituals of creative minds like philosopher Alain De Botton and author Mark Z. Danielewski. And last, but not least, we hear from one of the world's best-known chefs, Massimo Bottura, about the quintessential memories of his grandmother's tortellini that have inspired his creations to this day.

Sumac Style

Just like our content, our creative team is global in flavor. We embrace the clean, elegant Scandinavian aesthetic of our Danish Photo Editor and our Creative Director, we combine it with the intercontinental-crossroads-passion and spicy storytelling of our Istanbul-based Editor in Chief, and we tie it together through the straight-to-the-point yet tropical-joie-de-vivre structure of our New York-born, Costa Rica-based Managing Director. We present our content through page-turning essays, poetic creative pieces, stunning photography, witty illustrations, and hard-hitting journalistic exposés.

The Sumac Family

What good is a beautiful, fragrant meal if you can't eat it? We wouldn't be doing our mission justice if we kept the food, drink, and laughter paper-bound. We host real events with real people and real meals to as a way to practice what we preach—connecting people through food! It may be easy for some to harbor stereotypes about refugees they've never met. But when you taste the way they celebrate over grandma's cooking at the same, shared table, we assure you, the imaginary walls melt away and lifelong bonds are formed!

About the Team

We founded Sumac in the Spring of 2017. We are:

Martin Justesen (@mjustesenny), Creative Director, owns Martin Justesen | New York, a graphic design and branding studio. His most memorable food was his grandmother’s meatballs with potatoes, gravy and pickled cucumbers.

Signe Birck (@signebirck), Food photographer and owner of Signe Birck Photography. Signe shoots with well known chefs and home cooks alike, for books, editorial and commercials. Her fondest memory is neatly arranging her food on the plate as a child, rather than eating it.

Max Marshall (@maxonearth), Entrepreneur, constantly curious world explorer, owner of Téva Eco Retreat. His most memorable culinary experience is one that he's currently undergoing — opening his first restaurant with a garden-grown Moroccan-Israeli menu at his retreat in Costa Rica.

Ali Tufan Koc, Cultural journalist/writer who co-manages his content/brand studio Fingertips Digital. He lives for writing, loving, cooking, and breathing deeply. He thinks liver is an underestimated dish, and he is a bit obsessed with sampling new, exotic salts.

Risks and challenges

If we reach our funding goal, we will print this magazine and start sharing stories with the world! The printing process is all arranged. It will take about a month, and then shipping will take a week or two, depending on where our backers live.

In the small chance that we face future financial troubles and we are not able to produce new issues this year or in future years, we would not be able to fulfill the campaign rewards that include multiple issues of the magazine.

That said, we are very proud of what we've created, and we can't wait to share it with you!
