**UPDATE - We're now fully funded and have achieved both stretch goals!! Thank you for your support!**
Our Story So Far
Hi everyone - I'm Sujain Krishnan and I'm the owner and founder of the Melbourne Watch Company, a new Australian brand that was launched in October 2013 and aims to bring customers high quality and stylish mechanical timepieces at an affordable price point.
We started out last year with the successful crowdfunding of our debut model (the Flinders), reaching over 270% of our original target. We met our project goals, produced the Flinders within our target timeframe and we are currently delivering them to backers around the world.
We've been overwhelmed by the amount of support we received while producing the Flinders and as such have decided to give it another go with a second model - the Hawthorn.
We are targeting late May/early June for delivery of the Hawthorn to our backers.
We received a lot of comments during the development of the Flinders and many of them were along the lines of "love it but wish it was bigger", "it's a bit too dressy for me" and "I'd love some lume!". We took these on board and got to work with designing the Hawthorn.
The result is a watch which retains some of the dress elements of our first model but also addresses the comments above and combines them with the robust Miyota 8205 movement in a 42mm brushed steel case.
If our campaign is successful, we plan on producing the Hawthorn with a choice of black leather, tan leather or stainless steel bracelet. We will be aiming to produce a limited run of 300 units, 100 of each strap variation.
Note - All photos in this project are of the pre-production prototypes of the Hawthorn. Refer to the notes at the bottom of the project for details on items that will be updated for the production version.
Form Meets Function
We really wanted to create a design that would work for both "dressing up" and "dressing down". We also wanted to ensure that the watch is robust, reliable and suitable for everyday wear.
Movement - We have selected Miyota again for our choice of movement - the Hawthorn will feature the Cal. 8205 automatic movement with a beat rate of 21,600bph and a power reserve of approximately 42 hours when fully wound. The full specifications for the Cal. 8205 can be found on the Miyota website.
Case - To give the Hawthorn a sense of "ruggedness" we have opted for a fully brushed 316L stainless steel case with a diameter of 42mm. The case is 48mm lug to lug and is 12mm thick. The crown is engraved with the Melbourne Watch Company logo. The Hawthorn will also be rated at 100m water resistance.
Crystal - The Hawthorn will be fitted with flat anti-reflective sapphire crystal, both on top and on the display case back.
Dial - We wanted to incorporate some dress elements into the Hawthorn so we have designed a multi-layered dial with a "carbon" textured centre and applied stainless steel markers with C3 super-luminova for nighttime illumination. The dial also features a Day/Date complication at 3 o'clock.
Hands - The Hawthorn features a standard set of hour/minute/sweep second hands. As per our first model we have featured the "M" portion of our logo as the counter-balance to the sweep second hand. The hour and minute hands feature C3 super-luminova for nighttime illumination.
Strap - We've decided to offer the Hawthorn on a choice of leather (tan, black) or stainless steel bracelet. The bracelet features an "oyster" style flip-lock deployment clasp and solid end links. All straps and bracelets will feature the Melbourne Watch Company logo. The leather strap width is 22mm at the lugs and 20mm at the buckle.
We need to hit our goal of $15,000AUD in order to be able to progress the Hawthorn to production. We will be using a combination of revenue from our first model, pre-orders on our website and this Kickstarter project to fund production of the 300 watches.
If we don't get there we will try again later in the year - we are 100% committed to successfully producing the Hawthorn!
In order to help us achieve our goal we are offering you some great backer rewards in addition to the ability to secure a Hawthorn from the low pre-production price of only $295AUD.
Pledge $5AUD - Receive a personal letter of thanks from company owner and founder Sujain Krishnan
This one is exactly what it sounds like! You will receive a personal letter in the mail from company owner Sujain Krishnan.

The "no brainer" pledge. Secure a Hawthorn at the low pre-production price of only $295AUD. You can select from either tan or black leather versions. The MSRP of the Hawthorn on leather will be $395AUD when released.
Pledge $325AUD - Receive a Hawthorn on Stainless Steel Bracelet
The other "no brainer" pledge! Secure a Hawthorn on a steel bracelet at the low pre-production price of only $325AUD. Limited to 100 pieces, the steel bracelet version of the Hawthorn will have an MSRP of $425AUD when released.
If we exceed our target funding goal we have negotiated with our manufacturer to provide some extras to our backers as follows.
Where are we at?
As of 11th March we have placed a deposit for production to commence on the Hawthorn following reaching our target funding goal. We have also completed both stretch goals as described in the section above.
We are expecting samples of the new crown and case backs within the next fortnight and will post updated images when available. As production progresses we shall be providing updates as appropriate.
As noted in the project above, there will be several updates to the Hawthorn for the production version.
1. The crown will be flatter and wider to better suit the case size
2. The stainless steel bracelet will have screwed links to allow for easy adjustment and will be 1mm thicker for increased quality.
3. The case back will be upgraded to have embossed text as per the revised design below:
UPDATE - Please refer to the new photos below of the revised case backs and crown
About Melbourne Watch Company
Melbourne Watch Company was founded in October 2013 by Sujain Krishnan. The designs for the Hawthorn and the Flinders are 100% original and have been created by Sujain with assistance from his family and friends - they have not been developed by third parties.
All day to day operations such as project management, order fulfillment and marketing are handled by Sujain and family. Assembly has been outsourced to a reputable manufacturer in Shenzhen, China. The quality of product delivery so far with the Flinders has been fantastic and Sujain liaises with them on a daily basis to provide oversight and direction.
Melbourne Watch Company has strong roots in the online watch enthusiast community, especially on Watchuseek where we are a sponsor. We are actively involved in the discussion forums - we enjoy sharing our ideas with the community there and we are proud to say we have made some great friends along the way.
Risks and challenges
As with any project, there are always risks that delays can arise due to a variety of factors beyond our control including supply chain and quality control issues.
We are confident that having managed the successful production of our first model that we are well equipped to deal with any issues that may arise with the production of the Hawthorn.
We have selected a manufacturer that is used by several micro-brands in addition to ourselves and they have a excellent track record when it comes to quality delivery. We have also made sure to select a proven movement from Miyota of which there is ample availability.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
No, the Hawthorn is black dial only. The blue tinge in some photos is because of the lighting during the photo shoot.
The term 'non-hacking' in reference to a watch movement means that the sweep second hand continues to tick when the crown is dis-engaged and placed in the time setting position. You can still adjust the hour and minute hands when the second hand is moving.
If you are located in Melbourne you are welcome to get in touch with Sujain (email@example.com) and arrange a time to view them.
We are using the same case as the Flinders for the Hawthorn. You can check out a photo of the case here on our Flickr page:
