Hello and welcome to the latest project by Melbourne Watch Company, an Australian brand of timepieces launched in 2013. Our goal since the beginning has simply been to bring customers stylish and accessible timepieces at an affordable price, without sacrificing on quality.
To date we have successfully delivered four projects through crowd-funding and we have also independently released a mid-size dress watch in 2014. To view our complete range of previously released models, please visit our website.
We are pleased to be back again with our latest design - the Carlton - a combination of retro style with modern timekeeping in the form of a mecha-quartz hybrid movement.
The Carlton is our first foray into the world of both chronographs (stopwatch functionality) and quartz timekeeping. Inspired by the 'senator' style watches of the 1960s, the Carlton features a 42mm case, clean minimalist dial and a modern mecha-quartz movement by Seiko.
The Carlton will be produced initially in the Black/Stainless Steel and Silver/Rose Gold colour combinations as shown below.
The dial features a 60 minute timer (left), a 24-hour display (right) and a sweeping chronograph seconds hand (centre) that can be activated when needed. The subdials themselves feature a subtle sunburst texture and are surrounded by applied stainless steel hour markers.
As with all of our models, the Carlton pays tribute to a part of Melbourne. Specifically, the Carlton is named after an inner-city suburb famous for (among other things) being the home of the historic Royal Exhibition Centre; which we have chosen as the subject for the Carlton's case-back engraving.
What exactly is 'mecha-quartz'? - Seiko have recently released a series of 'hybrid' movements which combine the grab-and-go convenience of an accurate quartz timekeeping module (+/- 20 seconds average per month) with the feel of a mechanical chronograph (5 beat per second sweep chronograph hand and fly-back chrono reset).
For more information and detailed specifications of the Seiko VK series of movements, please visit the Time Module website.

We need your support to make the Carlton a reality! By backing this project you will be helping us fund the first production run and in exchange you will be receiving one of the first Carlton timepieces at a reduced pre-production price.
The Black/SS and Silver/Rose Gold versions of the Carlton will retail for $455AUD and $475AUD respectively when released.
As is tradition with Kickstarter projects, we are looking to offer our backers bonuses if we hit certain funding targets after our initial goal is met.
Stretch Goal #1 - $50,000AUD (UNLOCKED!): If we reach $50kAUD, all timepieces will be upgraded with anti-reflective coating on the inside of the standard sapphire crystal.
Stretch Goal #2 - $75,000AUD (UNLOCKED!): If we reach $75kAUD, all timepieces will come with both brown and black leather straps. For example; if you back the project for a Black/SS Carlton, you will also receive the brown leather strap with your order.
Stretch Goal #3 - $100,000AUD (UNLOCKED!): If we reach $100kAUD, all backers will also receive an extra deployant style butterfly clasp to match their timepiece. For example; if you back the project for a Black/SS Carlton, you will also receive a stainless steel deployant clasp with your order.
We have already produced and approved working prototypes of the Carlton and we are ready to go to production. All images displayed on this project page are of these samples and are representative of the final product.
We will begin production once we have reached the project goal and we aim to deliver all Carlton timepieces to Kickstarter backers in September.
As with all our projects, we will continue to provide regular updates regarding the status of production along the way once we get started.
Risks and challenges
The Carlton will be our sixth timepiece that we have produced and will also be the fifth crowd-funding project that we have undertaken. We have established a proven track record with our work and we have delivered successfully with each past project.
We have a deeply-established relationship with each member of our supply chain and we have proven order fulfillment processes in place here in Melbourne. We have had the working prototypes of the Carlton in our possession for several months and all images shown throughout this project are representative of the final product.
Despite our experience and preparation we are aware that issues can arise during production and delivery of any product. If we do encounter any problems along the way we will provide regular updates to our backers with as much transparency as possible. We understand that communication is key and we always go out of our way to provide a solid customer experience.
