About this project

Angela Dawson has been raised in the captivity of a government Facility for as long as she can remember. Though she is able to manipulate elements, The Facility quickly developed a means of preventing her from using her abilities outside of working hours, after her first failed escape attempt as a child.

Now almost eighteen years old, Angie seems to have surrendered to her life of testing, poking, and prodding within the thirty-floor underground prison. That is, until a suspicious young psychologist is hired to crack open her deepest darkest secret; the locations of the five others like herself, to whom she is connected in her dreams.

Faced with decisions of who to trust, who to love, who to kill, and whether to have pancakes or waffles for breakfast, Angela's transformation into an adult (and into a human being) is far more extraordinary than she could have ever imagined within the suffocating walls that raised her.

Oh hi! Thanks for taking a gander at my project!

Let me start by saying how FANTASTIC you look today! Is that a new shirt? It really brings out your eyes.

Onto the book. I had the idea for The Energy Room when I was about 14. It's probably a good thing I didn't start writing it at 14, otherwise it would have been full of way more weirdness than it is now.
The idea came to me the way most of my ideas do... In a weird dream that had consumed me after a bout of ice-cream ridden insomnia.
It was actually the night after I was CERTAIN I had seen a UFO outside our apartment window. I guess that's what happens when you've been up for three days straight eating klondike bars, and reading the entire Lemony Snicket series.
What? That didn't happen to you? Fine. I guess I'm just an oddball.
ANYWAY!
I had a dream that I was sitting in a pure white room with five other people on rainbow chairs, discussing my life in captivity at a place called The Facility.
When I woke up (in real life), I shook it off, and went about my eccentric life for a good seven years, having an occasional recap dream of the occurrence every once in a while.
At 21, when I became more adamant about writing, I revisited the idea as a screenplay. I got about a quarter of the way through it, then did what I often did; got side-tracked with something.
This year, my Fibromyalgia drove me to the point where, many days, I am completely bedridden. In an attempt to distract myself, I revisited the idea AGAIN, but found it felt malnourished when writing it as a screenplay. I could boldly see and feel everything the protagonist was seeing and feeling, and screenplay format wasn't letting me fully express those things.
I decided to delve into writing my first novel, and the characters and experiences immediately came to life.
It became a wonderful escape from the metaphorical prison my own body had turned into. Not only did it become the one thing I -could- do, it became the one thing I -wanted- to do. I was writing a book that I truly wanted to read, not just something I thought others would like to read.

Whether the project is funded or not, I will still be releasing an e-book version through Createspace and Smashwords. Though the goal is to get the book out there in any way I can manage, while staying true to myself, I will always be the type of person who prefers to have a physical book in her hands. It might just be an ADD thing, but I have a very difficult time concentrating on reading long stories in digital format. I want to make the experience of reading more enjoyable for others who have this problem.

Why self-publish? My reasons for self-publishing are pretty simple. I have a very specific idea of exactly how I want the finished product to be. I don't want any barriers between the true story and any readers who it may intrigue.
On top of that... it has never been easier to self-publish a book. It makes sense to eliminate the middle-men.

I've made the goal $2,700, which is bare bones for professional editing and illustration through createspace after the Kickstarter and Amazon fees, and for the rewards.
This will cover
-One round of comprehensive editing with a professional editor.
-A collaboration with a professional design team for the cover and interior.
-It will make my book eligible for sales to libraries nationwide
-It will pay for the ISBN
And it includes distribution through online sales channels, including Amazon.

If I, by some miracle, reach $5,600, it will cover the above, plus
-An additional round of editing
-A Kirkus review
-A video book trailer
-And promotional text creations.

While those additions would be absolutely lovely, they're not necessary, which is why I'm aiming for the lower goal.

If I exceed the $2,700 goal, but do not meet the stretch goal of $5,600, the majority of the extra funding will be spent on marketing and distribution, as well as some more rewards.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!
Again, thank you for taking a gander, and I hope I have been able to put your mind at ease if you decide to back this project.
More than anything... I hope you enjoy the book!

Risks and challenges

Since I'm self-publishing, and not relying on finding a literary agent or publisher, a lot of the risks are eliminated.
The only thing really stopping me from proceeding at this point in time is funding, which I'm hoping to change by involving all of you lovely people!
