About this project
<< ARE WE WHO WE REMEMBER WE ARE?
2019. A company - RESTORATION LIFE SERVICES - offers individuals the service of having their memories downloaded for backup. So, in the event of death, those memories can be uploaded into a new body, a generic host, nicknamed a "jerry".
After a routine backup, Oliver Klein wakes up to find that his memories have been restored into a body that is not his own. Trapped in this foreign body, Oliver Klein struggles to reconnect with his family and his life, and must come face-to-face-with the truth that he is not the only Oliver Klein.
And this foreign body? It has its own "muscle memory"*. Soon, Oliver discovers that he is capable of doing things the original Oliver never could and never would.
(* Science alert: We know that Muscle Memory doesn't exist. We are really talking about 'Procedural Memory'; and the distinction between 'Procedural Memory' and 'Declarative Memory' is a key element in Restoration's story).
<< WHAT IS RESTORATION?
RESTORATION is an online miniseries that follows in the tradition of the sci-fi we love : Philip K. Dick, Black Mirror, Twilight Zone, Warren Ellis & many others. We are taking a big sci-fi concept, fascinating characters, and weaving them together to tell a (hopefully) compelling and mind-bending story. It's sci-fi with a soul. Because that is what we love and what we do.
RESTORATION explores what it means to be human. In what ways does the mind drive the body, and in what ways does the body drive the mind?
Many of us would've experienced that strange moment when you've driven home and you realise you can't remember driving the car there. Now imagine being in a body that you think is yours and it drives your car somewhere else entirely - a place that is completely foreign to you.
That idea is at the heart of RESTORATION.
<< ONLINE MINI-SERIES?
Yup, we're calling RESTORATION an online sci-fi miniseries. Three episodes — each the length of a short film — tell the one story. A story told with high-production values and a cinematic approach. The complete series will be around 40 minutes long, giving us the time to create a fully-realised world, with relatable characters, and tell a thrilling story. It allows us to create sci-fi that is more than just a vfx-driven showpiece.
<< WHO IS THE CAST?
We have cast an exciting line-up of actors for RESTORATION:
Grant Cartwright (from MTC's acclaimed production of The Crucible, and webseries Death Star PR) will play Oliver Klein. Oliver is a committed family man and corporate lawyer with a streak of entitlement. Or, at least, he was.
Nadia Townsend (Knowing, City Homicide) plays Emma Laws, a technician who works at Restoration Life Services. Emma dropped out of studying medicine and now works for RLS - a job beneath her - to provide for her daughter. However she has a side-business in exploiting the power of the RLS technology for more nefarious ends.
- Stephen Carracher (Vanished) will play Gavin Worth, the man whose body becomes the vessel for Oliver's restored memories. Gavin is a self-made man who uses his physicality to impose his will upon the world. Or, at least, he was.
Rosie Lourde (Felony) joins the cast as Talia Klein, Oliver's wife. Understanding and patient, she works at the local legal aid centre.
- Ailis Logan also joins the cast as Dr Francis Parr, the Chief Neuroscientist at RLS.
We are energised by the thought of working with such a talented and committed ensemble cast. Together we’ll be able to take our sci‐fi concept and ground it with great performances, making it relatable and human and hopefully something really special.

<< WHY KICKSTARTER?
We are taking everything we have learned about filmmaking and we are stepping up our game. Almost all of the equipment is being donated to the production. Everyone working on RESTORATION is here for the passion. Nothing is being spent on wages - every cent is going on screen. We are putting all the money we can to bring RESTORATION to the screen. But it isn't enough to get us over the line.
The amount we asking for is so we can build Restoration Life Services ("RLS"). This is the company at the heart of the series. We explored shooting RLS on locations, but it would've been impossible to do. So RLS is going to be a set - quite a large set: 15m x 18m.
And we are excited to be shooting Melbourne's world class film studio. When we say world-class, we mean the same sound stages that housed WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, THE PACIFIC, DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, and GHOST RIDER. Yup! Pretty awesome.
We are doing everything ourselves to make this happen. From sanding back old flats to plastering the walls to nailing the joints together. But there are physical costs to building sets - from the wood to the paint and all the finishings that make the set real.
Which is why we are asking for your support. Your pledges will help us pay for this set. A set that is used in every single episode of RESTORATION In all, it will have over 20 minutes of screen time.
And to remind you - we are shooting all three episodes. This isn't a pilot. Or a couple of episodes. Or just a season. We are making the whole story and putting it online.
We also have some great rewards. In addition to posters, DVDs and Blurays, we are offering what we think are some cool stuff: exclusive T-shirts, a collector's USB (personal favourite), and for our big pledgers there are some limited-edition, hard-covered deluxe books that detail how we've made the film…. and many other cool things.
<< HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS
For a few of you this will be your first experience with Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a crowd funding website that allows creators to pitch projects and for people to decide whether to back them. It allows people to come together as a team and make great things happen.
In the case of RESTORATION, backers are given rewards in return - Blu-rays, DVDs, T-shirts. You can think of it as buying the Blu-ray before we've shot the film. This allows us to make something really great and for you to get something cool - and exclusive - in return.
Kickstarter makes sure that we have the means to do what we promised: build a great set for RESTORATION and then send you your great rewards. Supporting us is easy, you can sign up to Kickstarter with your Facebook account and pledge by using your credit or debit card.
Pledges don't come out of your account immediately. In the case of RESTORATION, they will only be deducted on the 1st of August and only if we reach our funding goal of $15,000. If we don't reach that goal, we don't get the money, and you aren't charged.
Every bit of support helps. Whether it's pledging or spreading the word, it all brings us one step closer to making RESTORATION a reality.
<< HOW WILL WE SPEND YOUR PLEDGES?
The construction and shooting on the RLS set is a significant proportion of the overall production costs. We're putting in as much money as we possibly can, but, without your help, this set is beyond our reach.
For those who haven't use Kickstarter before, we only receive the amount pledged if we hit our goal ($15,000!) and you will only be charged for those pledges if we hit our goal and after the 30th of July!
All the rewards are cumulative across tiers, except where otherwise noted. We are offering download-only reward options to save on the environment and on shipping.
We have some cool designs to reveal over the course of the campaign! So keep an eye out for updates.
Our Reward categories at the "NAMEGIVER" level and above promise that we will give you an on-screen credit in the Special Thanks of RESTORATION. We have started adding these credits to our IMDb page, as an early acknowledgement of these amazing supporters.
Here is a look at the t-shirt designs for the reward tiers that offer this. We had originally planned to offer one-sided designs but have upgraded these to a two-sided designs for the same cost in gratitude to our amazing backers.
<< MEDIA COVERAGE
We've had some amazing media coverage for RESTORATION so far, including articles from CNET, TwitchFilm, io9, Film Ink, and Inside Film! Click the links to read the stories.

RESTORATION is lucky enough to have development of the script supported by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria. This has allowed us to spend six-months polishing the screenplay into a tight, well-constructed screenplay.
Stuart (co-writer & director) is also the co-host of DRAFT ZERO, a podcast dedicated to the art and craft of writing screenplays. It has been in Apple's "Featured" podcasts in TV/Film for the last three months. We don't just care about story, we study it deeply and the screenplay for RESTORATION is a culmination of all that hard work.
Matthew Clayfield (co-writer), meanwhile, is a journalist, critic, and screenwriter. He has written for The Australia, The Sydney Morning Herald, The West Australian, The Global Mail, Crikey, RealTime, The Australian Book Review and SBS, amongst many others.
This is an amazing opportunity to film our story over a period of 2 weeks in a leading world class sound stage.
We are shooting on RED Scarlet-X. Mastering to Full-HD DCP with a full 5.1 mix. We are recording surround sound on set. And, even using binaural sound.
We are excited by the concept behind Restoration and the world we are making. And so we are fully exploring how to open this up. But RESTORATION is a self-contained story. We aren't just making one episode with this kickstarter, we're making all of them.
Risks and challenges
Film is a complicated medium with a lot of moving parts. The risks and challenges are unique to every project. RESTORATION is no different, except we are not just making one short film - we are making three.
We are slated to shoot in August (not far away, we know!) for around 14 days. With the funding from Kickstarter, we will be hitting the road at full speed. We can build the set for Restoration Life Services and make it what needs to be for the story to work.
Because this is what we do and we are prepared and we are super excited!!
Between them, Toby and Stu have worked on over 15 features from Superman Returns to Harry Potter 5 to XXX and Mad Max: Fury Road. They've done their fair share of music videos and TVCs too.
Add in the rest of the team? Well, that suddenly jumps to collective experience to well over 100 delivered projects.
This isn't to say there won't be challenges. From wet-weather cover to malfunctioning props, we can't easily predict what may happen. If you've ever watched behind-the-scenes of Hollywood features you know what can happen on the most high-budget of film sets. But between us all, we have the experience to handle situations as they arise and find the best solutions to ensure we stay on track.
When it comes to post, our goal is to make the best project we can. So while our delivery date is targeted for March, there is the minor possibility that it could slip if it benefits the project as a whole.
And before you ask about VFX HELL! Rest assured that Stu has an extensive VFX background and a strong pool of digital artists to draw on and is very capable of delivery vfx-heavy projects to deadline.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
