I <3 Bread
I <3 bread demystifies sourdough bread baking for newbies and helps the initiated elevate the ritual of sourdough bread baking.
I'm not going to lie, I love bread.
Like Oprah, I eat it every day.
A few years ago, I made the leap from being a bread eater to being a bread eater and baker.
Fresh, homemade bread tastes infinitely better than the kind you can get at the grocery store. Because bread was already so ingrained in my life, boosting the quality of this one staple felt like a major life upgrade.
I <3 bread aims to get folks eating better bread, replacing the store bought kind with home baked sourdough loaves made with minimal effort and maximum tastiness.
My regular bread baking habit revolves around sourdough, and a really simple recipe that doesn’t require a mixer or any kneading at all.
The I <3 bread products in this campaign are all about encouraging other folks to try making their own sourdough bread, and elevating the ritual of regular sourdough bread baking with thoughtful bread storage and artisan cutting boards.
The I <3 bread starter kit contains everything you need to get going:
-1 oz. of dehydrated organic sourdough starter
- a good looking, counter-worthy, 30 oz. swing-top glass jar starter vessel
- sourdough starter care and feeding instructions
- my go-to simple bread recipe (no kneading, and no mixer required!)
- a wax pencil for writing on your starter jar lid (to help you keep track of feedings)
The I <3 bread waxed cotton storage bag keeps bread fresher longer, naturally.
And, if you bake all the time, it's nice to have a sturdy, stellar cutting board that you feel good about displaying on your counter.
Sourdough starter contains a variety of wild yeasts and other beneficial microbes in a medium of flour and water.
Baking bread with sourdough starter is the original way to do it, and bread made this way is also called naturally leavened bread. Sourdough may or may not taste particularly tangy, depending on the recipe and ingredients.
Sourdough starter is alive, and you feed it regularly, like a pet.
Sourdough starter has the power to raise loaves of delicious bread with more complex flavors than commercial yeast.
Sourdough bread also has a sturdier chewy texture, and keeps fresh longer before going stale.
A long, slow fermentation process develops gluten naturally, which means no kneading and minimum effort.
Regularly feeding your starter involves removing about half and replacing it with fresh flour and water. One of my favorite aspects of the sourdough ritual is making delicious, fluffy pancakes with the discard, which is essentially already pancake batter. Nothing is wasted, and I get to enjoy sourdough between bakes.
Risks and challenges
This is my second Kickstarter campaign. Because this campaign's components are pretty basic to source, there aren't too many unknowns. If something does come up, I have a supportive community of fellow entrepreneurial product development students at UIC to turn to for help. I also have the guidance of our professor, a Kickstarter veteran.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
