I am an artist at heart and a product designer by nature. And you will often find me exactly where you’ve found me: working in my studio!
This project has been an artistic journey that began with a simple “eureka!” moment and has evolved to reveal limitless possibilities.
Back to Basics
I like to make my 3D designs beautiful and functional but with a twist; forcing people to rethink their everyday objects and look at the world in another (flat) light.
Merging the 2D & 3D Worlds
It all started with the design of simple candlestick holder, which I stripped to its most basic form. After months of playing with and drawing different prototypes, I arrived at the perfect product that combines a classic object with modern design. I looked once, I looked twice, and saw something completely new, innovative, and contemporary: The Flatlight, a candlestick that transforms into a sleek, totally flat 2D product thanks to the art of optical illusion.
The Making Of
Now this is where material meets concept. After experimenting with a range of materials for the Flatlight I arrived at my trusty friend, brass: it’s durable, it doesn’t rust, and it’s readily recycled. What’s more it can be cut using a state of the art technique called photochemical etching. This process corrosively machines away the finest details of my designs, on a piece of thin brass sheet, with the utmost precision thanks to the chemical milling process it undergoes. Unlike laser cutting, it does not create burrs or sharp edges and can be mass produced to the highest standards. And, it’s pretty neat to watch too.
In fact, when I first went to the photo etching factory, they saw my Flatlight design and turned me away because they only work with 2D design!

The Finished Product
Made from 0.4mm thick brass, the Flatlight, will be available in a range of colors as well as natural brass. But for those who simply can’t choose, reversible color options are available too. It’s the perfect design piece for any occasion or even a gift you can pop in the post. It’s light as a feather, flat as a piece of paper and is cool, beautiful, romantic, relaxing, and fun... And don’t forget, you just put a candle on it!
Thank you for backing my project.
The Flatlight is here to keep the design flame burning.
- 0.4 mm thick [0.01 inch]
- Light, durable, and water resistant
- If needed, pour on boiling water to wash away the wax
- Dimensions 15cm [5.8 inch] long by 6.4cm [2.5 inch] wide
I’ve spent many months sitting in my studio, hour upon hour, designing and working out the logistics for the most efficient and cost-effective production plan.
The next part is the simplest, which is where you come in! I need support through funding to make enough Flatlights to sell them at a fair price. I’ve set my target at just £5,200 in order to kickstart the project and produce a batch of 400 pieces to send to the homes and design-driven hearts of my backers. For each 50cm x 50cm brass sheet, I can create 21 Flatlights.
Risks and challenges
Every project has its challenges, but the beauty of product design -- making elegant yet functional objects -- is all about overcoming them. The Flatlight is made using just one machine, one brass sheet, and one process; meaning that the finished product is simply one piece that requires no additional assembling costs. The final stage, involves sanding the Flatlight by hand, which keeps me in control of how the finished product turns out: to perfection and of the highest quality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
