My Favourite Place is a children's photography workshop designed to explore their relationship with the urban form of their villages.

My Favourite Place is a photography workshop to be undertaken with children in rural Senegal near Louga in December 2012. We aim to produce a book that documents the outcomes of the workshop, focusing on the children’s interpretation of their urban surroundings. The project will run for 4 days, and will give an insight into the local way of life, through the recorded medium of photography.

The project is being ran by four masters of architecture students from the architecture department at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow who believe in creating a more sustainable future for less economically developed countries.

The photos from the workshop will be used to create a book, with an acompanying launch night/ exhibition which is planned for early spring 2013. In addition to this, prints of the children's pictures will be available as rewards, as will the pinhole cameras we will be using with the children.

In our modern world, we are surrounded by the built environment and urban form. Some of this occurs naturally but much is man made, never the less, it creates the surroundings within which our daily lives take place. Studio2080 will explore the relationship that children in rural Senegal have with these surroundings through the medium of photography in order to tell their personal histories and visualise these stories through pictures.

By teaching children to be aware of their urban environment and the intricate relationships we have with it, we hope to instill a new sense of awareness to help the children uncover new perspectives for themselves and to share this with the world. The photography will uncover these intricate personal stories whilst educating the children on how best to tell them.

The four day workshop will present the children with a history of photography. Taking the medium to its origins with the use of the studio2080 pinhole camera and all the way to todays digital technology. Each day will be a similar format, in order to provide structure to the day, and allow opportunities to gather the children together and see how they are progressing. The weeklong session will end with a small-scale exhibition, to be followed up with larger scale event in the UK in early spring.

The first day of the workshop will be an opportunity for the studio to introduce themselves to the children and issue the disposable cameras and workshop ‘passports’ that they will use throughout the week. This will require the children to construct their disposable camera sleeves and fill in their personal information in their passports. Studio2080 will document each day of the workshop by recording the days activities with both film and digital pictures, which will be presented to the children and families in the evening. Under a starlight Saharan sky, we will show the days work to the village with the use of a data projector and also introduce them to the teams ‘My Favourite Place’. This is to give a flavor of the work to be done during the week. We will also show the children a video of the pinhole camera construction process in preparation for the next days tasks. We will conclude this session with a screening of Disney's Fantasia for the children.

The second day of the workshop will see the children given with their own pinhole camera. Having been shown how it is constructed and operated during the previous evenings presentation, the children will build their cameras with our help in the morning. The whole day will then be spent with the children exploring their village and taking pictures. We will document the whole day with pictures and video to be shown during the evening session and presented by the children. During this session we will show a video explaining how pictures are taken with film SLRs in preparation for the following days work. We will conclude this session with a screening of Mickey mouse cartoons.

As with the two previous days, the studio2080 team will be documenting the whole process through pictures and film. The children will again present their efforts to the village and then be introduced to the next days workshop which will explain the use of DSLRs. When we get back to Scotland at the end of December, the work really starts! Collating the book and organizing the launch night will begin as soon as we get home, before we loose any flavour of the context and people of Senegal. The book will include all the developed photos taken by the children and their sketched interpretations of what they see, beautifully presented along with the story of the workshop, and every detail of what happens when we are out there. We will offer original photographs and prints as rewards for pledgers, so you can have a lasting piece of this project.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The success of this project depends almost entirely on securing the seed money to finance the workshop. The connections have been made in Louga and the equipment required for the workshop has already been sourced. To date the project has be largely self financed by the team with the last £4000 covering the running of the workshop once over in Senegal.

In addition to needing to secure the money to run the workshop, we are also concerned about certain logistical aspects of the project. Namely the renting of a power generator once in Louga to power the data projector to run the evening sessions.

However, the more money we raise, the easier it will be to overcome these problems, so please support our project!
