This is the first issue of "Silver Swords", a fanzine for the role playing game community based off of the old school fanzines such as Alarums and Excursions, and The Strategic Review.
The zine itself will be covering many subjects, such as settings, dungeons, and monsters, and systems such as 5e and Hero Kids.
We hope to use this format as a way to reinvigorate discussion of all aspects of role playing games as well as allowing less known authors a chance to get their content published and looked at by interested readers with good feedback.
Wait, what's a zine?
I'm glad you asked!
Throughout the 60's, 70's, 80's and even through to today in some cases, the Wargaming and, later, the Role-Playing community sprung up around the "zine". A small, homemade magazine of sorts that was used to share ideas and news about the niche hobby that these early tabletop gamers loved.
These zines helped create the large community we have today. It is possible that, without the large and robust community around early zines, games like Dungeons and Dragons, and thus role playing games as a whole, would not exist today.
Silver Swords is an attempt to recapture the feeling and experience of those old school zines, where people can exchange their ideas about Role-Playing games and the community as a whole.
What are the specifications of this thing?
Silver Swords Issue #1 has about a dozen contributors thus far, and we expect the page count of the issue so far to be about 24 pages by the time of publishing. The zine itself will be 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches in size, and published in black and white.
Why should you care?
Because it's fun! The articles will give a good look from many new perspectives at different parts of the role playing experience you may never had thought about. And who doesn't love the feel of a good zine in their hands? Flipping through the pages and enjoying the comfortable, nostalgic art as well as the well written articles that are the hard work of dedicated authors. Doesn't get any better than that.
With the successful funding of Silver Swords, we have prepared a number of stretch goals for you to oogle and oggle at!
$400 - At this goal we will release an all new monster for the OSR(pic unrelated)
$500 - At this goal we will give away a free copy of Stronghold Press Games' World War 2 aerial combat RPG "Maverick!" to all backers!
$700 - Upon reaching this goal, we will produce 2 pages of all new magic items for Silver Swords!
$900 - At this astronomical goal, we will begin production of a second issue of Silver Swords!
