Long before the threat of the Nemesis, before the perils of warp drive or the founding of our own Space Academy, humanity experienced a Golden Age of space exploration. The mineral riches of the thriving Moon colony inspired legions of hearty Earth citizens to seek their fortunes in space. Humble rockets probed the farthest reaches of the solar system in an eager quest for resources, and brave colonists forged homes wherever they could survive. Pioneer life was hard, but the men and women who worked and raised their families on those planets and asteroids had much to be proud of.
Then the rumors began – whispered tales of frontier abductions and sightings of mysterious creatures. By the time the secret invasion was exposed, the aliens were everywhere. Families had been stolen away by slavers from the stars, and the peace-loving survivors had no choice but to arm themselves and fight. Fight to stop the alien attacks! Fight to free the helpless abductees! Fight to throw the aggressors back into space and end forever their power to threaten humanity!
Thus was born the Rocket Patrol – an organization of brave and hearty women and men dedicated to defending humanity and taking the fight to the alien menace from the stars.
Space Cadets: Away Missions is a cooperative, scenario-based, tactical action game set in the Golden Age of science fiction. In this game, the third standalone title in the Space Cadets franchise of cooperative/team space-themed games from Stronghold Games, players take on the roles of adventurous human spacemen (“Rocketeers”) who explore UFOs, acquire alien technology and fight hordes of hostile extraterrestrials.
Each turn, Rocketeers spend action points on activities such as firing atomic rifles, analyzing exotic equipment, or subduing the malicious Brain-in-a-Jar. When the Rocketeers are finished, the Aliens take their turns by following simple movement and combat protocols. Seven types of hostile Aliens threaten the Rocketeers, from the repulsive Mind Leeches to the rampaging titanic Sentinels.
Space Cadets: Away Missions has scenarios linked in a campaign story arc. These "Away Missions" are set at various locations, feature different combinations of Aliens, and have diverse objectives for the Rocketeers to achieve. Hexagonal map tiles are arranged to form the locations, such as flying saucers, rocket ships, space stations, etc. Cooperation, tactical planning and a bit of luck are essential if the Rocketeers are to overcome the relentless horde of little green men!
In Space Cadets:Away Missions, Scenario Tiles and Scenario Tile Markers provide the Rocketeers with additional challenges and views of the danger. When the threat is subdued, the Tile Marker is removed, revealing the devastation left after combat.
Why is Stronghold Games doing a Kickstarter?
Stronghold Games does not do Kickstarters for any of its regular game releases, which range from $15-$60 or so. We are on record as saying that we place our own capital, marketing, and especially our credibility on the line for our games.
However, with this game release, where we want to go all out and create a huge game with up to 100 detailed, professionally-sculpted, plastic miniatures, we are testing to see if the market exists for such a big game from Stronghold Games.
In the same way that even larger companies used Kickstarter to explore a new market, such as Days of Wonder kickstarting “Smallworld 2 Digital” and Steve Jackson Games kickstarting the $100 “Ogre Designer’s Edition”, Stronghold Games is exploring this new market. We hope that this market does exist for us, and we hope you will be part of making it happen!
Note that we believe strongly in the great game play of “Space Cadets: Away Missions”. Therefore, this game will be published regardless of the success of the Kickstarter... except that if the Kickstarter does not fund, the game will be made with cardboard standups for all the Rocketeers and Aliens in the game. It will still be a great game, just with scaled down components.

Risks and challenges
Stronghold Games has over 5 years experience in the hobby game industry. We have proven that we know how to make great games for gamers.
As with all game publishing projects, there are issues around the timing of many aspects of the project. These can be summarized into these categories:
Our experience in the industry, delivering projects on time, on scope, and on budget, mitigates most of these delays. We provide enough lead time on our projects to ensure that we can deliver them.
If for some unforeseen reason we cannot deliver this project, we will be happy to refund pledges, but we cannot fathom that this would happen. Our record of delivering board and cards games is stellar.
We have other non-Kickstarter projects that are going on as well. However, there is no reason that we cannot complete all projects simultaneously. In 2014, Stronghold Games delivered 10 NEW TITLES in under 3 months from September through November, showing that this project is very doable while simultaneously performing our other projects.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
