About this project
String Sisters is a multi-national band melding the traditions of Shetland, Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and the United States. The music reflects the differences, similarities and cross-over of each player's traditional roots. First formed in 1998 the band has released just one album to date: the Grammy long-listed Live which came out in 2007.
String Sisters combines the very considerable talents of six of the world's top fiddlers – Annbjørg Lien from Norway, Catriona Macdonald from Shetland, Emma Härdelin from Sweden, Liz Carroll and Liz Knowles from the United States and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh from Ireland. Also featured is a peerless quartet of guitar, piano, bass and drums. That's Tore Bruvoll from Norway on guitar, plus Dave Milligan on piano, Conrad Molleson on bass and James Mackintosh on percussion from Scotland.
This project is very much a collective effort between the ten players, and the music included on the album is a combination of traditional tunes and songs plus new compositions all arranged by the band.
The album was recorded at Mareel in Shetland in June 2017. Mareel was chosen for its state-of-the-art facilities and outstanding engineer Tim Matthew. But even more important was its location: representing a bridge between the North Sea and the Atlantic, it sits at the confluence of the Nordic and Celtic styles that the musicians represent. The isolation of the islands and being close to the rhythm of the seas was also very important to us.
As you can imagine bringing ten musicians from their homes in Chicago, Maine, Donegal, Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, Tromsø, Kristiansand and Stockholm to Shetland was a serious (and costly) undertaking. The album has now been recorded but we need to meet our studio and travel bills, not to mention the demands of post-production and manufacture.
To all those of you who love this band and/or its members we're sure that you are going to cherish this recording and enjoy finding out about its progress. With the personalities on board, the process of putting it together is never going to be dull. That we can guarantee.
Risks and challenges
We have dived right in and started this project, but we need your help to finish it. We have a date with Celtic Connections in January 2018 for an album launch and we intend to keep it. This Kickstarter will mean we don't have to sell the family silver to do it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
