The Story of 'Duffer Of St George'
This will be a short documentary focusing on the founders and designers involved with fashion label ‘Duffer of St George’. My dad being one of them has inspired me to tell the story of the company. It will show the four different stories and the different paths of the founders. I feel this story has never been told and now is the time, being Duffer's 30th Anniversary, August 2014.
The founders started in 1980 as small market stall in Camden market, selling dead stock from Army and Navy surplus stores. They then rented a small shop in Portobello selling vintage mens clothing, which went onto being a high street label. During the 80’s they became popular within the Acid Jazz and rare groove club scene in London.
As time went on a range of fascinating characters had a part in this up and coming fashion scene, groups from both fashion and music gathered to hang out on the shop’s sofa such as, Kate Moss, Paul Weller and Norman Jay. It was the start of a movement which formed street style globally, this will be the main focus of the film.
When the noughties came around celebrities such as the Beckhams and Jamie Oliver were wearing their clothes, it was this that made the brand become more commercial. Today Duffer of St George is known as a sports wear brand within JD sports, in this film the audience will be taken back to where it all started and the changes that it underwent. This documentary will interview the interesting characters that were involved from the beginning and find out how it changed through the years.

Style and Structure:
The structure of the documentary will be a range of interviews along with a montage of photographers and catwalk footage. The narration will be used from the interviews of the different people who were involved. Music will also be an important factor as it co sided with the fashion scene at that time. In terms of the visual side, interviews will be set up in peoples own environment, whether it be where there living now or their workplace. I want the style of it to incorporate the 1980’s/1990’s so I will be using old VHS footage that I already have, that belongs to my dad.
The teaser above is a clip from a fashion awards show in the 80's which interviews one of the founders Marco Cairns. It is followed by a montage of old photographs and press. This should give a feel of the types of archive I shall be using. It is all ready to be used so is not a problem to get a hold of.

Risks and challenges
Hopefully, the risk level with this project is very minimal because we have to deliver for our third year final film.
