This deck of playing cards is unlike any other. While the cards are fully functional, the placement of the symbols and letters on each card was determined by a random process. This was then combined with a custom alphabet, 3D rendering, a huge stack of ink drawings, and an overly meticulous attention to detail to create a deck of cards that's truly unique.

Designing the cards began with creating simple three-dimensional models of the four traditional suits. I then used random dice rolls to determine the location, size, and rotation of each symbol on every single card.

The face cards were designed using the same process, only in this case the letters in the words Jack, Queen, King (and Ace) were placed in random positions and rotations. These letters were designed as three-dimensional versions of a full custom typeface that also appears in the background of each card.

The two jokers feature a variation of this process combining the two distinct colors, while the back of the cards highlight the four distinct suit symbols.

The 54 cards are packaged in a custom-designed card tuck box, featuring wraparound artwork that mirrors the unique geometric styling of the cards themselves.

Here's a little more nerdy detail about the design process used to create each playing card. First, a six-sided dice was used to determine the placement, rotation, and size of each symbol in 3D space, according to these rules:

Once this was done for every shape on every card, as well as the letters for the face cards, aces, and jokers, the result was something like this:

The arrangement of shapes for each card was then rendered and placed into a standard bridge-sized playing card template. Each pile of shapes was placed in the same spot on each card, so the underlying structure is exactly the same. Due to the random placement of the shapes, some pretty complicated and visually exciting patterns emerged.

Once the composition of each card was complete, I added an extra layer of complexity by printing each design out and meticulously tracing it with ink pens, scanning it back in and layering shadows and halftones for good measure. I've always loved the clean precision of calculated digital geometry and the scruffy texture of hand-drawn work, and these cards have both.

This geometric drawing was combined with a custom alphabet I've been working on recently. The text appears behind the drawings, as well as appearing slightly distorted and refracted inside some of the shapes' surfaces. Here's a completed card:

This overly meticulous process was repeated for each of the 52 cards and two jokers, creating a set of cards that pushes the edge of readability while technically remaining fully functional. Good luck playing solitaire with these!

We're keeping the rewards as simple as possible. Basically, we want you to get your hands on these cards as quickly as you can.

To keep things easy, you can order one deck of cards, which will be shipped to you in a custom cardboard mailing box. It'll even come with a tiny 4-page booklet showcasing some artwork from the design process.

You can also order the Special Edition. This contains two decks of cards, accompanied by a 24-page magazine (sized at 5.5" x 8.5") detailing the design process. It also comes with a pretty amazing Streeting Design postcard, and the whole thing is shipped to you in a custom cardboard mailer that says "Special Edition" on it.

Finally, you can order the Extra Special Edition. With this option, you get two decks and a 24-page magazine, and you also get an uncut sheet of all 54 cards, printed on the same material as the cards themselves. This poster-sized sheet measures approximately 20" x 29.5". Put it up in your living room!

These cards are a Streeting Design product. I launched Streeting Design in 2015 as a graphic design and illustration studio after years of agency work. I also teach experimental typography and publication design. Most of my clients are arts organizations, restaurants, non-profits, and other interesting people. Risks and challenges

Every project comes with its own set of challenges. Recognizing that, we've tried to make this project as fool-proof and practical as possible. The design of the deck of cards is completely finished. Once funding is complete, the only step is the actual printing process. For that, we're going to be working with makeplayingcards.com for the cards themselves, and Magcloud and Packlane for the printing of the magazine and mailing boxes respectively.

The $3000 we're asking for will cover printing of the cards, magazines, and mailers. Our goal is to mail out every reward before the 2018 holiday season, assuming the printing process doesn't run into any unforeseen issues.
