About

“There is a technology that can transfer the soul of a man into the body of a robot. The process yields incredible results… and terrible dangers.”

The future came and went with devastating results. Those who survived have rebuilt global communities out of remaining governments and organizations. Self-sustaining profiles now control vast areas and enforce strict rule over them. Even life itself is granted for a price.

Metalface is set in a futuristic world of corporate warfare, robotic combat and the ever evolving human spirit. Where anything is possible with technology, nothing is what it seems, and the greatest threats come from the desires within us all.

Introduction

My name is Rich Garner, and back in 1995 I partnered with a friend to create a trading card game for Hasbro. They ultimately dropped the game, but the efforts resulted in creating our own Role Playing Game called Metalface.

The game centers around the technology that allows man to migrate his living soul into an advanced robot body. Transformed forever into a living machine, the resulting individuals known as "metalface" possess abilities beyond understanding, but will never again join the human race.

History

A small handful of artists and writers assisted me in releasing the game as a downloadable book back in 2000, and a supplement book in 2002. We formed a small home-based publishing company and ever since, I have written volumes of stories and character descriptions and have begun a handful of projects to bring Metalface into other mediums.

Purpose

In an effort to resurrect the game, I will be updating the game books including core mechanics, rules and content for a new release of the game. This time I would like to publish soft and hard back copies as well as supplemental game material. I would also create complement mobile apps for tablets, smartphones and iPads that could assist players during sessions.

To this end, I have re-established my original game company under the new name of “Streamliner Games.”

Game Basics

Originally, the game mechanics used ten-sided dice only. But as a downloadable PDF, some players were unable to find special dice. So I altered the game to use standard six-sided dice.

The dice rolls for actions will be compared to character stats. The character stat determines what level of difficulty she can perform and the dice roll represents the difficulty of the action. Roll equal or under stat and succeed, over stat and fail. The mission guide (gamemaster) determines how many dice to roll based on factors such as story, environment, and character perks.

Another unique feature of Metalface is the leveling system. Characters don’t level but rather their professions (class abilities) level independently. A character can have more than one profession and level them separately or together.

The tactical rules are a new component of Metalface using hex-based maps and terrain modifiers in combination with mechanics for movement, facing, aiming, distance and environment.

Metalface production is a taxing and complicated science and requires many resources and skills to achieve successfully. This has limited the metalface production process to only the high-end profiles (corporate-states) that can afford such luxuries. While smaller groups have attempted the procedure only three profiles have been successful in mastering the science; Baxter Industries, CyTech Alliance, and The Genesis Foundation.

VECTORON

Under the control and direction of a powerful and corrupt corporation, a military science team developed a way to transfer the human soul into a robot body and created a t-bot (later referred to as 'metalface'.) The process was soon taken up by Baxter Industries, working together with several other aggressive profiles, and the first batch of t-bots ever created were called Vectorons. Vectorons were formed out of fear and greed with one purpose; war. With intimidating looks, sharp-angled bodies, and an array of deadly weapons, Vectorons were the crowing achievement of corporate military technology. Those who became vectorons found themselves trapped in senseless bodies with little to no contact with the physical world around them. Held prisoner in their own minds, many went insane and sought death. They became violent and uncontrolled with nothing more than a desire for destruction. However, some vectorons were able to maintain control over their emotions and even find ways to continue to live their lives as normally as they can. But all vectorons fight the most frightening battles in their own minds.

SERVITE

Soon after the Vectorons were declared unstable, the process was handed over to technology organizations to allow more dedicated scientists to try to improve the results. More care was taken in the preparation of the human subjects as well as drastic changes to the body designs. The results produced Servites, t-bots created for protection and public service. Servites were more human friendly, life-like in appearance, and equipped with a wide selection of tools and weapons needed to protect the population and serve the general public. With the introduction of the Servites, it was established that the term “t-bot” was demeaning to transferred humans who wished to retain their humanity. The term “Metalface,” which was the name of the first t-bot ever, became an acceptable description and was etched into the public vocabulary.

TEKKER

After the Vectorons took great care to eliminate the remaining military controlling bodies, the process was sought after by hundreds of corporations. In order to ensure positive future use of the metalface transference generator, 7 major construction and material corporations formed the Cybernetic and Technical Allocations Alliance and made the highest bid to secure the process. They used the process, with even more alterations, to create Tekkers, metalface with incredible abilities to repair and create. Not much detail was put into the body designs, but the Tekkers more than made up for it in almost superhuman abilities to manipulate metal, plastic, glass and other common materials at super-fast speeds.

Each make of metalface has a few models. Typically designated by the original Baxter military terms, the most common models are Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Omega.

Mobile Integration

In today's modern world of mobile-everything, it only makes sense to create companion apps and tools to assist game runners and players get the most out of their Metalface sessions. As a Flash developer for the past 17 years,I have built Flash-based tools and training aids for governemnt, military and corporations with increasing complexity. Therefore I am uniquely talented to excel in this endeavor.

Your Support

There’s much more to explain. I will post more videos and details over the new few weeks. For now, I ask for your help in raising funds for equipment, software and printing costs involved in getting this small publication a big boost.

Thank you for your time, and your support.
