What is a corporation’s role in society? Can a corporation fairly govern a city? Can good and evil truly be defined? Where does humanity end and human begin? Should we manipulate our DNA to fight world change or allow nature to evolve us?
These are some of the questions we asked ourselves while writing The Threat.
The Threat is a glimpse into humanity's possible future. Set in an Asimovian world in which Bioengineering and Cyber technology are common and an unknown disease runs rampant.
After a societally devastating event in 2024, humanity must fight to survive and rebuild from the ashes of past. As the world crumbled, one man’s vision brought his society back from the brink and created a spectacular new city and a new seat of power for the United States rose in Houston, Texas.
A group of people trying to survive everyday life are forced to defend themselves against the new order and in doing so may become the city’s last hope of survival.
Written with an eye towards hard and predictive sciences and the speculative aspect of societal change, The Threat is an alternative sci-fi comic, all taken with common super-hero elements.
In an effort to stay in the realm of possibility we were inspired by the current leading trends in science, technology and the outermost reaches of the human imagination. There is a startling amount of scientific advancement in the world from using viruses to transmit new, healthy DNA to human cells to producing energy from the bio-luminescence of particular creatures. This science along with many other new concepts are the crux of our story and many of the powers and abilities shown in the comic are based in nature and can be explained through science.
Written by Mark Schmidt and Vince Chuter, with illustrations by Jose Fernandez and colors by William Anderson, The Threat is an 8 issue miniseries that we may expand on in the future by exploring more of the world.
Issues 1 - 4 were previously published and the Reboot issues will be a retelling of those issues with all new artwork, colors and some additional content.
Why reboot? Publishing a comic at the indie level is hard work. Each of our first 4 issues was illustrated by a different artist. In preparation for a trade we decided to reboot these issues to have the artwork maintain a consistent feel, expand on our original story, and bring each book up to 28 pages. Jose and William have both agreed to work on multiple issues, allowing us to work more closely with them to maintain that consistency and ensure that our vision is brought to the page.

Risks and challenges
Since the artwork for the project has been completed, the main issue we could run into would be delays on the printer side. Our goal of $1400 will help us help Jose get to be the first famous comic artist to live on the moon and help William with his dream of bringing his mail order Martian bride to earth, and allow us to print enough copies of the comic to fulfill our orders for the project with a few left over for conventions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
