Thank you! We have hit our initial target of £10k which means we can greenlight Part 1 of our epic Two-part Season Finale! You are awesome. A huge thank you to all the Mirthlings who have supported us so far!
We still have a few days before the campaign ends on 27th November and we will push as far beyond that as possible to fund as much of part 2 as we can. Our Season Finale has so much action we need to split it into TWO PARTS! Part One is now fully funded... but who wants to be left on a cliffganger? The more we can PUSH towards our Part 2 goal, the more we can get into production quickly. Fasten your Space Belts!
STRANGENESS in SPACE is a comedy sci-fi audio adventure for adults and children alike. In May 2016 it was listed amongst The Guardian's "50 Podcasts You Need to Hear", described by Hannah Verdier as: "The podcast that sends kids’ TV favourites into orbit". Hannah went on to say: "Daft sci-fi comedy for all the family, starring Trev and Simon from Saturday morning kids’ TV of yore. Pink Custard, an 80s synthpop duo, are blasted into space by mistake. Cue silly songs rhyming “android” with “overjoyed”, delivered in a Pet Shop Boys style, puns that will make seven-year-olds’ giggles rain down, and gags about pop, space and sandals. Each (episode) is crowdfunded and when they reach their total, they make another – so treat yourself to the lot".
Fans have also just nominated us for THREE Awards in the Audio Verse Awards: Best Production, Best Actress for Sophie Aldred, and Best Comedy Script for Trevor Neal and Simon Hickson. And we reached No.6 in the iTunes Comedy Chart!
And here we are now, four episodes in, heading towards the epic climax of Season 1 of our Audio Adventure STRANGENESS in SPACE with an action-packed, star-studded two-part season finale!
A double whammy of sci-fi strangeness. Stranger things indeed.
Scroll down to find out who's in the series; and for our goals and FAQ. (The most frequent being "how do I buy more than one Reward?" and we show you how!). We've also popped in a showcase at the bottom so you can have a peek at some of the perks and their designs.....
What would happen if Sophie, the manager of a NASA Space Centre gift shop, and Trev & Simon, two idiots claiming to be a 1980s-styled synthpop duo called Pink Custard, were thrown together with a computer robot called L.E.M.O.N. on board a damaged spaceship, lost in a distant universe, orbiting Planet Mirth?
Well now we know! Trev, Simon, and Sophie have been rocketed into the extraordinary, surreal world of space! They’re racing into the future with a foot in the past (the nostalgic 1980s to be precise). What will happen to them, how will they survive, and however will they get back to Earth? Fuelled by a diet of indigestible powdered space food, they have so far encountered a whole host of unusual space dwellers and aliens, including Featherheads, Rhinocerbikers, clockwork puppies, Automaviscera, and the giant French-speaking robot The PuppyMaster!
STRANGENESS in SPACE is available to anyone with a smartphone, computer, or tablet; or any device (from the past or the future) that can play it. It's there for you to listen to at any time you choose; you can listen to the first four episodes by clicking on this link. And, thanks to you lot, it's absolutely FREE!
The series is written by, and stars, comedy duo Trev and Simon who for a decade dominated Saturday morning TV with their mad and unpredictable world of comedy, sketches and silly games on BBC1’s Going Live! and Live & Kicking. They Didn't Do Duvets, or Perms or Discs, but they DID Swing Their Pants!
Of course, they wouldn't survive long in Space on their own but they're heading off with the very capable Sophie Aldred; Sylvester McCoy's companion Ace in Doctor Who and Tom in Tree Fu Tom opposite David Tennant.
We've been delighted and honoured in our first four episodes to have been joined by some of the greatest performers in this (or any other) world!
Episode 1, Featherheads, saw the arrival of our ongoing special guests. DOON MACKICHAN as our mad but reliable Narrator Bounty Flightingale, DAVID ANNEN as our overly thespianic Studio Announcer Jeremy, SARAH MADIGAN as M.A.D.I. (Monographic Announcement & Description Interface), and BARNABY EDWARDS as the super intelligent talking robot L.E.M.O.N. (Linguistically Enhanced Mobile Operations Network).
In Episode 2, The Five, we were joined by a Galactic Trio of Stars: RUFUS HOUND as Atrocious Knocious, a Rhinocerbiker on a Hoverbike, PETER GUINNESS as the truly terrifying Dr Scarifium, and comedy legend CAROL CLEVELAND of Monty Python fame as the impatient Dr When!
Episode 3, Step Back in Time, saw our trio come back to Earth with a metaphorical bump (aka a flashback!) when we were absolutely thrilled to be joined by 'the Godfather of alternative comedy', ALEXEI SAYLE, as Keith Keys, a Security Guard with a penchant for the Bee Gees and Amuse-Bouche!
Back to Planet Mirth for Episode 4, Pet Shock Boys, where PATERSON JOSEPH joined us as The PuppyMaster, and where we ended the episode on an emotional rollercoaster as Sophie was contacted through Space and Time by her father... played by a certain SYLVESTER McCOY!
And so to the climactic conclusion to Season One! The two-part finale. Will our trio be rescued? Can they get back to Earth? And WHO can help? We promise big surprises, big plot twists, big laughs, and some new special guests!
Our First Goal is £10,000 to fund the costs of making Part One of this Two-Part Season Finale. When we hit that we'll be assured of funds from Kickstarter and can greenlight Part1.
But no-one want half a finale so once we have hit £10,000 we will PUSH on to fund the Second Part of our Season Finale within this same campaign. If we can hit £20,000 we can get Part Two made for you as well and save the hell out of our trio. Or not. We told you there would be plot twists!
(And should we go even further... to £20,000 and beyond! We will invest it in further Strangeness of course... and who knows? Season Two anyone?)
NB: This Target will support our cast & production crew fees, recording and studio costs, sound design & mixing, travel, music composition & recording, artwork and graphics, hosting fees, and of course the Kickstarter fees (around £8%) and the cost of the perks we are creating, not to mention Vat. £10k of crowd-funding money is not the same as £10k from the bank so when we set a budget we have to take the latter into account too.
We've come up with a whole planet worth of exciting new perks to add to our 'classics' - from Pocket Money Perks to Be-a-Producer status. We see the return of your favourite Rewards such as having your name read out at the end of the episode for Everyone to hear FOREVER!, and the arrival of new ones such as adopting one of our 1138 puppies from Ep.4!
AND! It's your chance to get Trev & Simon to come and make your beds! YES! JUST THIS ONCE THEY DO DO DUVETS! (we just said do-do). This is how much we all want to make the Season Finale! Every one of these Rewards will help us get Season One of STRANGENESS in SPACE done and space-dusted!
Several of the Rewards give you a choice of design or size - don't panic if you can't see how to choose a specific one here - just pledge for the Reward you want and when we come to sort everything out at the end of the campaign we'll be in touch to make sure you get exactly what you want.
You can see some of our Rewards here, but please make sure to check out the list on the right too!
We can't photograph all of our Rewards. How would we take a photo of a name being read out? That would be silly. So do please check them all out; it will give you a chance to start thinking what you might like when the time comes to tell us.
No... the main thing you need to know with Kickstarter is that you are PLEDGING to pay at the Campaign's completion; no money is taken at all unless we hit our target by 27th November. If we don't hit our target we don't get any of the funds, even if we get close!
Only at the end of the Campaign, and only if we hit our target, will you be charged.
Want more than one Reward? The Kickstarter mechanism only allows you to pledge against one Reward at a time - but it's perfectly ok for you to pledge for, and have, more than one. (In fact we'd LOVE it!) If, for example, you decided to have a T-shirt, and then you want a video made too, simply amend your pledge from £20 to £70 and message us to say what you want (our producer, Clare, claims to have Action Man-style Eagle Eyes, and nothing goes unseen; if you've pledged more than the cost of one Reward she will be on it!)
*If you want a Limited Award please pledge against that one so the tally stays up to date.. and if you want more than one limited award please message us!

Here's more about Clare: Clare Eden was also Producer on the award winning podcast series The Minister of Chance, with its all-star cast led by Paul McGann, Jenny Agutter, Sylvester McCoy, Philip Glenister, Lauren Crace & Julian Wadham. "On Minister of Chance we literally started with an idea", says Clare, "but no commissioning budget. We ended up with an incredible cast, with a worldwide fanbase, and winning a Parsec Award in America as well as being nominated for a BBC Audio Award."
This is her TENTH time crowdfunding a script so you are in safe hands. "Crowdfunding is a wonderful way for an audience to have a sense of ownership and involvement in something they enjoy. When The Minister of Chance won the Parsec Award the ripples of tweets and Facebook posts went on all night; from the UK across to USA to Australia as fans cheered 'WE won the Parsec'... I'm thrilled we've been able to create that same sense of community and personal achievement on Mirth; across all ages, across all continents, and all known and unknown universes".
You've started by reading this far! And if you now share this with a friend that's two of you! Please pass round Facebook and Twitter; please RT and share news posts - anything to help spread the word. And remind friends they can already listen to two hours of spacetastic, star-studded, comedy drama... FREE at www.strangenessinspace.com! If we've tempted you to any of the Rewards your support will make an enormous difference! And in helping us achieve this goal you'll become one of our honorary Mirthlings... one Space Step beyond a mere Earthling.
Risks and challenges
Obviously it's important you know that your support is going to a project you think deserves to be made, but also that it has a team able to deliver it for you. We've done that with the first four episodes of STRANGENESS in SPACE, delivering a high quality audio drama, on time, and on a low budget. Everyone on the Strangeness team knows the trials and tribulations of working on such a low budget venture; the frustration of sometimes not being able to do things as quickly or as easily as we'd like. But we have never failed to come up with a solution that not only gets us over any hurdles, but usually sees us surpassing them. Low budget needn't mean low standards; it just means a lot more work and innovation from your team, and what a dedicated team we have!
That's because we do also know how satisfying it is to work alongside a team you trust, on something about which you all feel so strongly and passionately. There's a joy in being able to produce a script that hasn't gone through a myriad of commissioning processes, often compromised by committee. And it really is a wonderful feeling to know you are making it for an audience that becomes part of it; an audience that cares and wants to be involved! That's something which has shone through in all the wonderful Mirthlings who have supported us to the ends of the mirth through Episodes 1-4.
There are very few problems that I haven't already encountered on Strangeness or on The Minister of Chance season, and I am entirely confident we can meet them (and any pesky new ones!), with the same determination, innovation and good humour. Meet them and boldly go over them ... all the way to our Season One Finale!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
