About this project
Our initial Target to make Ep1 for you has been REACHED ! But if we can hit £20,000 in this campaign we can put Episode Two in pre-production as well.
FOR THESE LAST FEW DAYS: Buy any perk from here, or upgrade an existing one, and ONE of you will also get your name mentioned at the end of Episode 2!
So WHAT IS IT and WHY have these marvelous Mirthlings wanted this to be made? And might you want to join them?
Strangeness in Space is a new comedy sci-fi audio adventure for adults and children alike; created in the spirit of '80s kids' shows. It will be available to anyone with a smartphone, computer, tablet, kindle to listen to at any time they choose!
The series is written by, and stars, comedy duo Trev and Simon who for a decade dominated Saturday morning TV with their mad and unpredictable world of comedy, sketches and silly games on BBC1’s Going Live! and Live & Kicking. They Didn't Do Duvets, or Perms or Discs, but they DID Swing Their Pants!
Here they are with Kylie Monogue in The Singing Corner with them!
Of course, they wouldn't survive long in Space on their own but they're heading off with the very capable Sophie Aldred; Sylvester McCoy's companion Ace in Dr Who and Tom in Tree Fu Tom opposite David Tennant.
We have a wonderful cast of comedy and cult stars waiting in the wings for Ep2!
DOON MACKICHAN is playing our (mostly) reliable Narrator Bounty Flightingale, DAVID ANNEN is playing Jeremy, and BARNABY EDWARDS is playing L.E.M.O.N. ... They'll be regulars and have already seen Ep2 ... and they REALLY want to record that as well!
To keep things running on board the space ship and everywhere else, Trev and Simon and Sophie rely on their talking robot computer LEMON (Linguistically Enhanced Mobile Operations Network). Unfortunately for them LEMON is not your average super intelligent space computer robot. LEMON is over worked, over-emotional, and very stressy - in fact, a bit of a lemon really.
What would happen if Sophie, the manager of a NASA Space Centre gift shop, and Trev and Simon, two idiots claiming to be a 1980s styled synth pop duo called Pink Custard, were thrown together with a stressy computer robot called LEMON on board a damaged space craft, lost in a distant universe, orbiting Planet Mirth?
Trev, Simon and Sophie are unwittingly rocketed into the extraordinary, surreal world of space! They’re racing into the future with a foot in the past (the nostalgic 1980s to be precise). What will happen to them out there in each episode ... how will they survive? And however will they get back to Earth?? Fuelled by a diet of indigestible powdered space food, they will encounter a whole host of unusual space dwellers and aliens, in as many episodes as we can fund through this campaign with your help!
They'll bump into the flocking Featherheads, or encounter the hairy scary Rhinocerbikers (led by Rufus Hound's Atrocious Knocious); shake hands with the sinister Dr Scarifium (Peter Guinness) or be shook up by a Space Ghost!
The initial Target gets this series up on its feet; covering all the start up costs for the whole series (website, series storylining, theme tune as well as concept art & graphics for promotion) and the costs for us to bring Episode 1 to release in a couple of months time (that's everything from cast & production crew fees; to recording costs, sound effects & mixing, travel and so on).
NOW WHAT? Well, now we've hit the target to complete Episode One we'd love to be able to make an Episode Two too!! If we can hit £20,000 in this campaign we can put Episode Two into pre-production as well! The script is sitting here waiting and we have Rufus Hound, Peter Guinness and Carol Cleveland waiting in the wings to make it.
We've come up with perks to suit all budgets - from Pocket Money Perks to Be-a-Producer status ... with t-shirts and cast signed artwork on the way... and there are BADGES - ooh, and a PARTY - come along to the cast & crew party! Every one of these perks will help us get this series up and running for you - and give our Mirthlings a chance to own something special; something beyond the reach of mere Earthlings!
Here's what Trev & Simon had to say... They still don't do Duvets... but They DO do Perks!
AND NEW DESIGNS HAVE JUST LANDED ON EXECCER'S DESK!
Here's our Tee - you can choose in black or white, in Unisex or Ladies fit and in any size (including kids) .. just pop along to perks over here to our right!
WANT TO SEE BEHIND THE SCENES? Join The Wormhole, our members club in which we will post behind the scenes news, videos, competitions and out-takes; you'll get some of it before other Mirthlings and some of it will be exclusively available in The Wormhole - a well spent £20 if you like to want to follow how we put it all together! Trev, Simon and Clare have just been to Stoke CON Trent and caught some great footage for it!
CAN YOU BUY MORE THAN ONE PERK? and DO I NEED TO WAIT TIL PAYDAY? - Yes you can and No you don't!
The main thing you need to know with Kickstarter is that you are pledging to pay at completion on 26th April, no money moves now!

The Three Spaceketeers are working alongside Clare Eden, producer of the award winning podcast series The Minister of Chance. That series had an all star cast led by Paul McGann, Jenny Agutter, Sylvester McCoy, Philip Glenister, Lauren Crace & Julian Wadham. "On Minister of Chance we literally started with an idea" says Clare "but no commissioning budget. We ended up with an incredible cast, with a worldwide fanbase financing an entire first season through crowdfunding; and winning a Parsec Award in America as well as being nominated for a BBC Audio Award along the way!"
"Crowdfunding is a wonderful way for an audience to have a sense of ownership and involvement in something they enjoy. When the Minister of Chance won the Parsec Award the ripples of tweets and Facebook posts went on all night; from the UK across to USA to Australia, and all following the same message "We won the Parsec". Both Dan (Freeman) and I were extremely touched, and I really want to create that same sense of community and personal achievement on this; across all ages" .
We had great fun running the Big Draw(ing) at Easter; kids and adults sent in fantastic illustrations of how they thought the Featherheads might be and they are in albums on Facebook and Tumblr. You can also find word-searches and spot-the-difference competitions on there... and we love our interactions with Mirthlings on Twitter (@strangeness_in)
see Execcer's Blog for more on how Crowdfunding works for both the project and its supporters ..
HOW CAN WE GET INVOLVED?
You just started it by reading this far! And if you now share this with a friend that's two of you! Feel free to pass round any of the film trailers you see on Facebook and Twitter; RT and share news posts, anything to help spread the word. And if we've tempted you to any of the perks, they will all make an enormous difference!
Think Lost in Space meets Tintin meets Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy meets Dumb and Dumber - with every other sci-fi movie and cult TV show thrown in for good measure....
and then also think Trev & Simon...!
And then think of Sophie!
And then think audio, not film or TV
(Yes, we know, that's a lot of thinking. Why not have a little lie down now?)
Risks and challenges
THE SENSIBLE BIT FROM THE SENSIBLE ONE (no pressure !)
Obviously it's important you know that your support is going to a project you think deserves to be made, but also that it has a team able to deliver it for you. Many of the team also worked with me on The Minister of Chance - another fan-funded, and therefore low budget, project. Without doubt, an enormously satisfying journey .. creating a wonderful worldwide fan community online; gaining phenomenal critical acclaim and winning international awards - but also an incredibly sharp learning curve!! There are very few problems that can come up that we haven't already strained our brains on. Everyone on the Strangeness team knows the trials and tribulations of working on such a low budget venture; the frustration of not always being able to do things exactly as we'd like to and constantly having to think out of the box to come up with solutions... but we also all know how satisfying it is to work alongside a team you trust on something about which you all feel so strongly. To be able to make something that hasn't gone through a myriad of commissioning processes where you are asked to compromise on so many aspects to suit a committee; and especially for an audience that becomes part of it; that cares and wants to be involved... We've all headed into this knowing the challenges in store and are entirely confident we can meet them with the same determination and good humour.
And I guess if Trev and Simon get run over by a bus we'll grieve and then ask Ant and Dec....Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
