What is Strange Horizons?
Strange Horizons is a speculative fiction magazine, available free online, published every Monday. We began in September 2000. In the last year, Strange Horizons and our translation-focused sibling magazine, Samovar, have published nearly a million words of speculative fiction, poetry, essays, roundtables, interviews, and reviews.
Since our inception, we have been entirely funded by voluntary contributions, both from readers and the volunteer labor of our editors. We pay all authors and artists fair market rates for their work.
Why support Strange Horizons?
Because we support speculative fiction—science fiction, fantasy, horror, and all sorts of crossed genres between them—as an open, global tradition. In the last few years, we have published specials on Nigerian SFF, SFF from the Arab League community and diaspora, trans and nonbinary writing and experiences, as well as pieces on race, resistance, and disability. This fall, we’ll be publishing a special on Brazilian SFF, funded by our 2018 donors.
Because we have a record of finding and supporting exciting new voices in SFF: writers who got their start in Strange Horizons include N. K. Jemisin ("The You Train," from 2007), Justine Larbalestier ("The Cruel Brother," from 2001), Ken Liu ("The Algorithms for Love," from 2004), Nnedi Okorafor ("The Palm Tree Bandit," from 2000), John Scalzi ("Alien Animal Encounters," from 2001) and, in more recent years, G. V. Anderson ("Das Steingeschöpf", from 2016).
Because we're a multiple Hugo-shortlisted magazine (for seven consecutive years!) and we've published stories that have been shortlisted for or won Hugo, Nebula, Locus, James Tiptree Jr., Theodore Sturgeon, Rhysling, and World Fantasy Awards.
What We Need
We need $13,000 to fund the basic running costs of the magazine for one year. Provided we reach that goal, here are our stretch goals:
· At $13,200 we’ll bring you a Strange Horizons special podcast by the Hugo-nominated team of Be the Serpent.
· At $14,700 we’ll bring you a special issue on Mexican SFF
· At $16,200 we’ll bring you a special issue on climate change
· Raising $20,000 will allow us to raise our pay to 10 cents per word for fiction, and unlock our rainbow snake logo (see below)
· If at some magical moment we get beyond 20k to $20,150, we will raise our articles rate to $90 per essay
· If we get to $20,750 we will raise our poetry rate to $50 per poem
What You Get

We also have t-shirts, tote bags, and mugs with our main name logo, as well as postcards of Strange Horizons cover art.
Publishing houses and authors have donated book bundles and autographed books for donors—take a look at our offerings to the right at the $85 and $100 level.
If you want to buff up the fund drive ebook and cause enormous glee, donate $150, and one of our donor authors will write an interactive Twitter thread.

And the generous soul who donates $1000 will get all the SH swag in existence, our eternal gratitude, and be able to name an upcoming special issue (from a long list).

Risks and challenges
If we fail to fully fund the full amount of our yearly costs and/or stretch goals for special issues, we will seek alternative grant funding where appropriate.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
