Good Society is a collaborative roleplaying game that seeks to capture the heart, and the countenance, of Jane Austen's work. It is a game of balls, estates, sly glances, and turns about the garden. At least on the surface. Underneath this, just as in Austen's own novels, it is a game of social ambition, family obligation and breathtaking, heart-stopping longing.
In this game, you play the type of characters that captured your imagination in Austen's books - from a wealthy heir who falls in love with the aloof new arrival, to a charming socialite bent on ruining the reputation of their rivals. Exploit your position, connections, and family influence to achieve your desires - all while jealously guarding your good name.
Good Society was successfully funded and published in 2018, and raised over $150k on Kickstarter. As part of that Kickstarter, we created two PDF expansions for Good Society, Pride, Prejudice and Practical Magics, and Sense, Sensibility and Swordsmanship.
Now, we want to bring these expansions to print in one beautiful book, along with two new expansions for Good Society – Downstairs at the Abbey, which explores the hidden lives of servants and the trials and tribulations they face, and Emma, Forget Me Not, which turns Good Society into a sprawling story about the rise and fall of fortunes and careers.
On top of this, backers have also unlocked the mini-expansion The Fae Court, which tells stories the fight for power in the Queen's court, and the strange ways of the Fae.
These expansions are fully compatible, and can be used in any combination. Explore the sprawling story of Fae who linger in the mortal realm for generations, or discover the lives of servants by day, who become vigilantes under the cover of darkness.
Like Good Society, An Expanded Acquaintance will be a 200+ page hardcover book, filled with thematic material and beautiful art. It will contain all four expansions, and all physical stretch goals unlocked during the campaign.
Accompanying the books, there are three tarot sized decks of cards:
- The Base Deck for Good Society
- The Swords and Magic Deck for Pride, Prejudice & Practical Magics and Sense, Sensibility & Swordsmanship
- The Service and Ambition Deck for Downstairs at the Abbey and Emma, Forget Me Not
Each deck contains 30 Desire and Relationship cards to make every expansion replayable and customisable.
Each also contains 30 Connection cards to bring your games to life. These cards are used to create supporting characters that hold tremendous influence over the lives, circumstances, and hearts of the protagonists.
Geek & Sundry listed Good Society as one of the Best Tabletop Roleplaying Games of 2018, in the Indie RPG category saying “Good Society brings together fans of Jane Austen and Downton Abbey in a fun story game that simulates the twists and turns of these stories of heartbreak and intrigue.”
One Shot Podcast “[Good Society] has simple mechanics that encourage players to get stuck in big messy webs of desire, duty, and expectation. If you’re a fan of Austen, the Bronte sisters, or even Oscar Wilde, I definitely recommend checking out this game.”
Bustle “Good Society: A Jane Austen Roleplaying Game lets you create your own Jane Austen-inspired character and dive into some self-created, Regency Era intrigue… You can enjoy Good Society even if Jane Austen novels aren't necessarily your thing.”
Whimn “It's A Truth Universally Acknowledged That We Want This Jane Austen Board Game”
Servant or Gentry of Note Details
Your character will be illustrated in full colour by Aviv. This illustration can be based on a written description, or inspired by your likeness, or the likeness of someone you love (with permission!)
Please note, if you previously backed as a Gentry of Note, we can’t use the same likeness again – but you can still create a whole new character!
The extra funds pledged in the Servant and Gentry of Note tiers go directly to the artist - we just want to fill our game with beautiful art.
To add additional copies of your pledge, simply double your pledge amount. Please note you cannot do this for Servant and Gentry of Note tiers as these have limited spots!
Physical Stretch Goals
Stretch goals we reach will be included in the Expansion Hardcover and Service and Ambition Deck as relevant. As we hit stretch goals we will list all physical stretch goals, and where you can find them here.
- The Fae Court - Included in the Expanded Acquaintance Hardcover as well as PDF
While those upstairs concern themselves with displays of wealth and the pursuit of marriage, what is happening downstairs? Inspired by Downton Abbey, Longbourn, and Girl with a Pearl Earring, this addition to Good Society explores the lives of servants as they deal with drama of their own. Tell stories of heartbreak and ambition in a world far harsher than genteel society can understand.
In this expansion you will tell two parallel stories of upstairs and downstairs, which cross and entangle in unexpected ways. Do you make compromises to move up the household ranks? Can you stand steadfast when your family depends on your wages?
Our duty and business call us away from the ones we love. To trade, to war, to pursue promotions or opportunities. And yet we never forget those we parted from.
Emma, Forget Me Not, is an expansion created to tell sprawling stories about the rise and fall of fortunes and careers, and the bittersweet taste of longing. Pursue a naval career, start a merchant empire, or represent the crown abroad. As you track your fortunes and failures, you will also explore changing relationships, from lost loves, to broken friendships and lasting feuds. When it’s time to return home, will those you loved still be who you remember?
Inspired by works such as Sorcery and Cecelia, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, and Shades of Milk and Honey, this addition to Good Society adds a magical backdrop to regency society, and provides characters with both the power and the burden of arcane arts and otherworldly politics.
In this expansion, magic is as common as gossip, and almost as powerful. Social faux pas can have supernatural implications, and spellcasting is an essential mark of genteel refinement. Expect to be caught up in prophecies, charms, and the equal pursuit of magical power and advantageous marriages.
Inspired by works such as The Mask of Zorro, Sovay, and the Scarlet Pimpernel, this expansion to Good Society gives each major character the option to acquire a masked identity; from a Vigilante standing up for justice, to an Outlaw after the greatest prizes the town has to offer.
Expect to be caught up in plots, schemes, machinations, and outrageous action sequences—while still maintaining a respectable civilian identity, and trying to secure an advantageous marriage. Oh, the things this world expects of us!
In the Faerie Kingdom, Fae fight an endless struggle for power. The courts of Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn locked in a contest for dominance as secrets, oaths, and powerful magics seethe below the surface. Above them all, the Queen reigns supreme with unknowable desires of her own.
In this mini-expansion, play as ambitious members of one of the four courts, scheming for power. Or play a mortal pulled into the Fae realm, lost in a web of promises, enchantments, and dark secrets. Beware what you touch, you eat, you speak, you hear. For none return from this place unchanged.
Good Society is a collaborative tabletop roleplaying game, where you and your friends take on the role of regency characters, AND the forces that complicate their lives, to create a truly Austen story.
To make a game that plays like an Austen novel, we've created a completely original system, with game mechanics that mirror the actual mechanics of Austen's world.
Reputation, family background, rumour and scandal, and of course, the writing of letters, are all important rules of the game. These mechanics are all geared towards narrative and collaborative play, allowing players to work together to shape the story they want to tell.
To learn more about how the game works, grab the Quickstart, or view one of the actual plays below - please note these use an earlier version of the rules.

Our Actual Play
Each expansion uses the core rules of Good Society, as well as adding mechanics specific to its theme:
- Sense, Sensibility and Swordsmanship adds masked identities to Austen’s world, as well as a new rooftop phase and mechanics for daring deeds.
- Pride, Prejudice and Practical Magics brings spellcasting and enchantments into the game, along with magical factions and otherworldly relationships.
- Downstairs at the Abbey gives players the chance to play servants with stories to tell of their own, and adds a new phase where upstairs and downstairs collide.
- Emma, Forget Me Not, adds mechanics that plot the progress of a character’s career, fortunes, and station, as well as relationships that grow and change over time.
For those curious about Pride, Prejudice and Practical Magics, here is our audio actual play.

Risks and challenges
This is not our first turn about the winding garden path of Kickstarter. We’ve Kickstarted and completed two games – Good Society, and Alas for the Awful Sea, which were both fulfilled by the Kickstarter estimated delivery date.
As we discovered from last time, the biggest risk is delays in the printing process – while these are outside our control, we will allow extra time, as we did previously, to ensure these do not impact fulfilment.
As with Good Society, we are planning to improve our new expansions based on your feedback - that's one of the most exciting opportunities a Kickstarter can offer! We'll involve you in the process every step of the way.
We write monthly updates, and we’ll keep you informed throughout, from stretch goals to fulfilment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
