Final 48 Hours - Hero Highlight - The Assassin!
As we are closing in on the last couple of days of the Battle for Biternia campaign we wanted to introduce another one of our core Heroes, the Assassin!
The Making of an Assassin
Appropriately enough, the path that led us to the Assassin was fraught with peril. Beginning her life as a rogue-like thief, she transitioned into a much more satisfying position-dependent powerhouse whose true damage potential could only be unleashed through careful preparation and (perhaps) a well-timed distraction from her allies.
The Assassin is a versatile hero who struggles with spontaneous dueling but can apply deadly force to any hero she's spent time observing. Her trait, Death Mark, gives enemies who have shared a space with her a token that amplifies her effectiveness against them. Not only does Death Mark provide the Assassin with a flat damage bonus, but it also transforms her otherwise unremarkable powers into terrifying displays of force -- especially her ultimate, Deathstroke, which instantly kills her foe if they have a Death Mark on them.
We designed the Assassin's offensive abilities to have a low floor and a high ceiling. Her two offensive powers, Backstab and Garrote, are comparable to basic attacks against most targets. Used against a hero with a Death Mark, however, Backstab becomes a deadly double strike while the benign Garrote becomes a game-changing stun.
No assassin would be complete without some cloak to go with the dagger, and Fade Away delivers by giving the Assassin, a dash-like power that also grants her stealth. This protects her from non-area damage for an entire turn and helps her get close enough to apply her Death Marks more safely.
Summary: The Assassin places Death Mark tokens on enemies in her space, which amplify attacks and power cards she uses against them. Her sub-par HP is offset by evasive abilities, and her boom-or-bust offensive power is unremarkable against targets she's not prepared to fight.
