Skyshine's Bedlam, The Banner Saga Warbands, and The Banner Saga 2

Posted by Stoic (Creator)
Hello All!

Wanted to give you all a quick update as to what we’re working on and share a few cool things stemming from The Banner Saga!

First, Skyshine’s Bedlam is launching today! The Skyshine team are a great group of guys who licensed our engine to make their post-apocalyptic rogue-like combining the gameplay elements from FTL and The Banner Saga with a very Mad Max inspired setting. We’ve played it – and we think it’s pretty rad. Check it out via

The Banner Saga 2 is coming along nicely and we really think you will dig the changes we’ve made to combat and the continuation of the story. While we don’t have a solid release date yet, we’re aiming for the winterish time frame. The folks at PC Gamer recently had a nice preview via

The Banner Saga on X1 and PS4. Development is still underway and coming along. Going to consoles was just a bigger engineering challenge than we initially thought however we’re making great progress. If you’ve ever played the PC version with a gamepad then you’ll have an idea of the gameplay you can expect once we do release on consoles, but it's been greatly improved.

The Banner Saga Warbands was announced recently. We teamed up with the Megacon Games team to create a very awesome looking coop miniatures game. They will be launching their own Kickstarter for this project soon. You can head to to sign up to learn more and get notified of when the Kickstarter launches.

As always – thank you all for your support and kind words along the way. Game development isn’t an easy road, but having you folks behind us really keeps us going.

Banner Saga Update - April 17th

Posted by Stoic (Creator)

Greetings Backers!

We’re releasing a rather large update for The Banner Saga and it includes the Linux + SteamOS versions of the game. We know it took a while, but we had to do things the right way rather than rush anything out. We’re happy were the Linux + SteamOS turned out.

We've tested primarily on SteamOS Beta and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. If you have any issues on your system, please contact us at If you've claimed your Kickstarter Steam key, the Linux version should show up in your Linux Steam Client after you restart it. The GOG and DRM-free versions will be uploaded in about a week.

We are very pleased with the way the game feels when played with a gamepad. We tested with the primary 4 controllers: Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation DualShock 3, and Playstation DualShock 4. We also tested with a variety of generic gamepads. However, if you use an unrecognized controller, you still might be able to configure it when prompted by the game. If you do this successfully, please contact us at so that we can incorporate your configuration into the game for everyone else.

The Steam Cloud saves will help ensure that your save games are more permanent and available for The Banner Saga 2. When you start the game for the first time, the game will automatically upload your old save games into the Steam Cloud.

Here are the Major Points and Release Notes for this build

Main Points

  • Linux + SteamOS
  • Big Picture
  • Full Gamepad
  • Steam Cloud Saves

Release Notes

  • Ported the game to Linux and SteamOS
  • Added Steam Big Picture support
  • Added Gamepad support for Xbox and Playstation compatible controllers
  • Graphical renderer completely rewritten and optimized using Starling and Stage3d for Windows and Mac OS X platforms. This puts more load on your GPU, instead of the CPU. You can still use the old renderer by adding the command line option "starling=false" without the quotes.
  • Added zooming with mouse wheel
  • Fix issue preventing achievements earned in offline play from uploading to Steam when Steam finally reconnects
  • Fix issue with Rook exclaiming when he dies to Bellower with the silver arrow
  • Fix issue causing Silver Arrow to be unusable in the Bellower Fight
  • Hero Stat upgrade GUI improved with new 'add' and 'subtract' buttons
  • Fix several grammar and spelling issues
  • Fix issue where Egil is still available for fight after being betrayed
  • Battle Horn no longer deducts stars if they cannot be used on the active hero
  • Command line options format has changed. See the Developer Cheatsheet for more information.

We've also been working on Banner Saga 2, which will be picking up right where The Banner Saga ends. In case you haven’t heard it yet – you will be able to import your save from Banner Saga 1 in to Banner Saga 2 so that you continue your journey with the same characters and the same choices.

We haven’t revealed much info about Banner Saga 2 yet, but please check out the work-in-progress bear animation below from our friends at Powerhouse Animation.

We also recently hired a new artist to help with Banner Saga 2 and we’re proud to share the below link from Kotaku highlighting some of his amazing work. Great to have you on board Igor!

As always – we truly thank you for your support and patience. We wouldn’t be here without you folks!

The Ghost Varl - Support Bedlam

Posted by Stoic (Creator)

The minute I saw the concept art and heard the gameplay pitch of Bedlam, I was anxious to be a part of it. It sounds and looks like just the kind of game I would enjoy playing. The idea of adapting our technology to the task is exciting as well, because it lets us get more use out of the immense effort we put into The Banner Saga, as well as improve the engine through refinement and collaboration. I want to go to Bedlam! Check out their Kickstarter at .

The team behind Bedlam (Skyshine Games) approached us with a really fun idea last week about getting something from The Banner Saga within Bedlam. What did we come up with? We're pleased to introduce and share The Ghost Varl. Arnie spent some time yesterday drawing up this awesome legendary varl and John Muller spent the night adding in some color and effects.

We've got a higher res version available at the following link for those interested in a new desktop background!

Once again folks, we do want to thank all of you for helping us when we needed it. We appreciate everything you did for us and we hope to continue to make games that give you folks more of what you want. Thank You!

Mobile Platforms Now Available

Posted by Stoic (Creator)

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update to let you know that we have fulfilled our Kickstarter promise to bring you the game to mobile platforms! We are really excited to tell you that today we released The Banner Saga on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPad Touch. For all you Android users, don’t worry, we are actively working on that version and should have a release date for your within the next week or so. We tried everything we could to release them simultaneously but it just didn't work out the way we wanted it to.

We knew early on that this game would work really well on mobile devices and even though it’s the same game, the experience is somehow even better e.g. tilting the device allows you to get the parallax effect, you can now zoom in and out of travel sequences and even get up close to the action during battle. We hope to retrofit the PC/Mac versions with the upgrades we were able to achieve for the mobile launch.

Thanks again to all of you for your support, we hope you like it!
