Update #42

Let's Play: The Banner Saga part 4!

Ready to see the result of your decisions? Thanks for your patience! We're still working on getting the website back on its feet, but we're going to keep the demo going. After this I expect there will be one more video.

A quick report: we're making ridiculous progress on the game. All the major cities in the game are done. We've got items up and working (many of which are submissions from backers), and we're starting to get final music in as well. Austin will be doing a music update in the near future. At this point the majority of what we're doing is adding the remaining content. Then it's on to polish.

We worked over the weekend to get a build done for Fantastic Arcade here in Austin. Drop by if you're in town and try the demo yourself! Regretfully, we (again) won't be able to personally attend, since we're heads down on production from now until the game comes out.

Something of note- based on feedback we got on conversation, we've already made changes to the game that we think help significantly. Check it out in the video!

#2. Also, just wanted to say everything looks gorgeous; I keep expecting Merlin and Wart to pop up. This is exactly what I was hoping to get.

One thought - have you guys thought about trying to crowdsource the voice work? Put the dialog out there and let your backers see what they can come up with - we're twenty thousand strong, at least a few of us are likely to have access to some decent recording equipment (or know someone who does).

I don't know enough about dredge's purpose here.Did they come to kill people,or capture and ransack town? If it's former, getting the food would mean they will all chase, and we might have even a tougher situation down the road.If it's latter, going with Ivar is a best choice,if a bit standart. I want to see what happens in choice #3

      I vote #2.

Thanks for the heads up on the RPS preview: That was a happy camper!! The melange of oregon/king of dragon pass etc sounds wonderful. Still have not got round to factions due to computer issues, but really aim to. Tbh the factions is more my thing so cool it'll be fed stuff from the main game going forwards. Thanks a lot.

Option 1 seems like it's almost certainly going to lead to Ivar dying also.

      I'll vote 2.

Won't get far without food. I vote #3.

#3 Food. An army can't march on an empty stomach.

#3. It's pointless escaping if you're going to starve. Besides, they should be able to protect the column from the Dredge... fingers crossed.

#3 - We can't afford to leave the storehouse behind.

I vote 3...they say in the text that without food people won't survive.

    11. Fb_profile_picture.small

      Creator Andrew C on September 11, 2013

I vote for 2, Rook and Iver are more likely to survive together IMHO, and the distraction might mean more squishies (sorry, civilians) survive. Although, that of course makes food more of a problem.

    12. Gkar_(1).small

Creator Kennan Ward on September 11, 2013

I agree, the first was the obvious best choice from the text. I think I voted for three, I wanted to see how something I would never have done would have played out.

I'm not really sure what 3 would even mean, so in the interest of seeing I will go with #3.

    13. Missing_small

Creator Asa on September 11, 2013

I think option 1 will create too many casualties and the storehouse is a distraction. Rook and Iver make a good team, I vote option 2.

    14. 2uuxt.small

Creator mothrascales on September 11, 2013

I vote number 2. The honorable thing is to risk ourselves for the good of the public. The food is a distraction from the true threat, but blindly running away in mass sounds equally bad.

Man, and this is just Chapter 1... I really hope this is ass kicking amazingand the rest of Chapters can proceed without trouble (or financial pressure). So far, it looks beautiful and makes me wish for a (digital) copy of the OST.

      Oh, I pick #3.

#2 (although as others have noted, these choices are a little ambiguous...)

      BTW, these previews look fantastic.

Thanks for the clarification Alex, that makes sense considering what Iver said in the discussion.

Stoic also just posted a short video by Austin Wintory, with some beautiful music and great shots of a few new units.

I bet option 3 is actually, "Leave with laden carts and expect the Dredge to catch up." Essentially a fight later at higher potential cost to civilian life option.

    20. Missing_small

Creator Asa on September 11, 2013

My impression was that banding together to defend the town has been decided against - it seemed suicidal. I think they're talking about how best to leave the town and get to Frostevllr. But I'm also confused what option 3 would mean.

This is my impression of what each option entails:
      1. Leave town all in one group as fast as possible, and ignore the storehouse
      2. Have Rook go with Iver to create a distraction, and ignore the storehouse
      3. Have Rook stop and pick up as many supplies from the storehouse before everyone leaves

It would help to know how far away the storehouse is, or if Iver would go with Rook to help get to the storehouse. I feel like the storehouse plan wasn't fleshed out enough in the dialogue. But I really like the new portraits next to the speakers name; it's neat to see the game being changed so quickly based on our feedback.

Creator Alex Wilgus on September 11, 2013

I think I'm missing something. What does it mean to not leave the food behind? Does it mean everybody bands together to try and fight them off, or is that off the table?

I really like the focus on deep reading and picking up details, and my lack of focus is not boding well for my playthrough! Thanks for the videos, they're a great introduction to the game and now I'm even more excited for it than I was.
