Let's Play: The Banner Saga

Hello backers! After a brief delay the first part of the PAX playthrough is ready to go! Keep in mind, this is all in-game and we're still in beta so some effects, polish and optimizations are still in development. That said, we're getting damn close!

At the end of the video we'll need to make a choice. What would you do? Vote in the comments and we'll continue on next time with the most popular decision, a day or two from now. As always, watching in HD is highly recommended...

A couple people asked that we not flood their inbox with a dozen updates over the next week. We'll be hosting the whole playthrough on the Stoic forums. You don't even need an account to watch. Feel free to comment on the first part here, and check in on the Let's Play thread to see what happens next.

Thanks for watching!

The video is absolutely beautiful! The graphics look fantastic! But also the story telling is very nicely done. I was most impressed by the lifelike movement of the figures in the battle. That really adds to the atmosphere of the game. Beautiful work that you guys have done here!

FYI - the next demo video has been posted:…

I'm in favour of the updates via Kickstarter, and you can always remember to those who aren't in favour that they can unsubscribe to any project's newsletter they want, so to handle the amount of mails they receive.
The game is stunning, and I understand perfectly the reasoning behind no voice over.
I'm really eager to have the game in my hands!

      Let them fight.

And I would prefer updates via KS please

    6. Aerouge
      on September 3, 2013

Yep... I want my updates via KS and in my mailbox.

That´s why I backed via KS and not via other means. I want to receive updates constantly and via this channel. If people feel spammed by KS, have them put KS on their spamlist.

As for the video... looking really great. Any chance we can get our hands at the demo anytime soon?

      on September 3, 2013

@Stoic Personally, I'd rather get more updates via KS.

If you're going to use the forums, please provide a way for us to subscribe to updates that a new video is available.

    8. Kim Fredrik Svendsen on September 3, 2013

Hey, the main reason I pledge on KS is to get updates! I payed for it. Dont f'in hold back because of a few uptight bastards. The vast majority wants it, thats why we are fans you know? Pff. Some people..

Optionally look at what Star Citizen are doing on on the com-link you get news multiple times a week. I have it tabed in my browser and just refresh when I so desire.

Oh, and awesome video! Keep em coming. :)

      Vote is #3

The game is coming together beautifully.

      I loved the video.
As it has been noted already - the panning can get a bit annoying.
Even more important though - the speech options can use a bit of cleaning up, to make sure we know what we're getting into. After all, BioWare have been nice enough to provide a model of how NOT to do a "dialogue wheel".

My vote is for the girl to stay and fight (Option #3, I believe?) - she could clearly use some hardening, and I get the feeling it might be useful in the days to come...

@ Stoic: "People didn't want us to spam their inboxes with a new update every day. "

Well, excuse me if I find this incredibly egotistical and lazy of them. But I guess you can't blame people for being people. I was actually more surprised that you went ahead and indulged their whims. Take that as you will.

I still haven't even watched the first video, but Im sure the rest of them will slip off my memory when job- and life-related things kick in during the week. So thanks a bunch, lazy egotistical backers.

      Looks absolutely fantastic!

    14. Alexander Holland on September 2, 2013

hmm, if there isn't going to be voice-overs, could a "Peter and the Wolf" thing be done where a characters voice is substituted with an instrumental piece?

    15. Jonathan Koay on September 2, 2013

This game is gorgeous! It has such a nice cinematic feel. It's a shame, there is no voiceover. I understand the budget constraint, but it feels incomplete. Is there really no way to incorporate this?

    16. Federico on September 2, 2013

Ok i won't see the next let's play(s), but it's clearly all coming nicely, great work!

It's possible to change the settings so that one doesn't receive inbox alert everytime there's an update. Therefore i really don't understand people who complain for the "update spam". Everytime a backer logs in he can see all the updates notices....boh.

    17. cthuun on September 1, 2013

      looks good.
      i choose option 3

    18. Michel Rowinski on September 1, 2013

I thought 3 at first but then I realised that someone has to go to the hall as well and they will probably get the chance to help regardless if I am not mistaken in my interpretation of the dialog before the choice.

      Great job!

    19. Nathaniel Smith on September 1, 2013

Looks great, remember people that you can subscribe to Stoic on Youtube for updates too

This looks absolutely gorgeous. Wow. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game. I played Factions a bit, but held off because I wanted to play the 'main' game first. I'm doing the same with these videos, but I couldn't resist watching a couple of minutes.

I am so totally excited for the first chapter. Keep up the fantastic work!

      Beautiful, just beautiful work!

      on September 1, 2013

Who the heck are these people who want less updates...? Especially at this time during PAX; ofcourse we want to be flooded with information over the week....

so what, I have to go check this Stoic forums site now - randomly each day - to see what's going on during this week and the follow up videos because of a 'couple' of people in the comments here who apparently don't want to turn their updates off?

Anyway... looking really great, Love the close up dialogue cutscenes and animation quality in general!
One thing that did bother me was 2:58 - 4:14 could have used a bit more banter/dialogue between the characters to fill the entirety of that scene in constant conversation - seem to just be sloooowly watching the cart move along with not much else going on considering the urgency of what is occurring during that part of the story.

      @Jeff A,

I think Option #2 is for people who want to be that dickish commanding military figure that doesn't really care about the people, just results. #1 and #2 have the same basic result, but it looks as if #2 would also damage their relationship. It is a bit silly though.

    24. Jeff A. on September 1, 2013

I'm not even sure what option #2 means.
Option #1: Alette and Egil goes to the great hall, like Iver said.
Option #3: Alette and Egil helps Iver and Rook fight the Dredge.

Option #2: Rook throws a fit and doesn't make any real decision?

    25. Asa on September 1, 2013

Jeff, Stoic wasn't talking about how often they post updates about the development of Banner Saga. They were talking about people not wanting to get a whole bunch of of updates in the next week every time a new segment of the PAX demo gameplay video is posted. I think we can assume that Stoic will keep posting updates as frequently as they can.

    26. Celeir on September 1, 2013

Gorgeous! But I'm wondering if there will be at least 0.5sec delay between end of user's and dredge's turn? Or maybe this is kinda a way to underline that this creature is unstoppable and has no "ballistic shock"?

    27. Wintersong-Tempest of the Obsidian Order on September 1, 2013

That is truly gorgeous. O_O My Hype-o-Meter was off but right now it's over 9k. Makes me wish I could have pledged more money.

I would choose the option 1 (in my first of probably various playthroughs).

    28. Jeff
      on September 1, 2013

@Stoic I am not say I want a daily update but as you can see their are a few that want updates. I just feel the amount of updates you have sent out is a little lacking. I loved getting the 3 updates in July. It finally felt as thought you were engaging the community but then went back to 1 a month. I first might suggest something very easy. Break your huge updates into 2 parts. Then post one part and another part a week to a week and half later. Half the time I forget I even backed this due to the infrequent updates.

    29. TheChosenOne on September 1, 2013

Those people that don´t want their inboxes spammed can just turn the updates thingy off. Problem solved. Even on KS you can turn off the updates alert per backed KS. So everyone is covered.

    30. Jerry George on September 1, 2013

We should be able to choose any of the 3 options during our play.

    31. Roman Unger on September 1, 2013

The game looks ridiculously gorgeous. Great work!

Truly one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen. You've don't some amazing work here, I can't wait to get to play it.

I'm already hoping this experience will be so rewarding for you that we'll go on to see many more releases in this style.

And of course we should let them fight.

    33. Brys on September 1, 2013

I'm always really amazed by backers that insist that updates are kept to a minimum and that they don't want to be "spammed." It's like they haven't heard of disabling updates via Kickstarter or even simple e-mail forwarding to keep it out of their inbox. People truly suck.

At any rate, this is looking great and I'll be following the forum thread closely. Thanks Stoic!

    34. kincajou on September 1, 2013

@Jeff: I think you misunderstood the comment. As we play through this demo we're going to be doing many updates in a matter of days. People didn't want us to spam their inboxes with a new update every day. We're wrapping the whole playthrough in a forum post to avoid this. It has nothing to do with "not wanting to do updates".

    36. Jeff
      on September 1, 2013

This is where you stand on posts this year. Not enough IMO but some are huge post.

      Jan 2 updates
      Feb 1 update
      Mar 0 updates
      Apr 1 update
      May 1 update
      Jun 0 updates
      July 3 updates (WOW)
      Aug 1 update
      Sept 1 update so far.

I think it should be 2-4 updates a month. Even if just a screen shot saying here still here and pushing forward.

    37. Ysengrin on September 1, 2013

I'm really excited about this game, Factions is great fun, but I'd love some context for all those desperate battles.

Looking forward to the release, looks great.

    38. TheChosenOne on September 1, 2013

Agreed, I want updates too. If they don't want to be flooded they can turn the updates/e-mail stuff off. Don't listen to them and asume that is what everyone wants. I turned off my e-mail updates long ago since I get between 2 and 15 updates a day.

    39. Jeff
      on September 1, 2013

If you don't want to take the extra time to do updates like you should DON'T blame it on people say "Don't flood my inbox" that is just BS. I want updates. We are lucky to get 1 a month. Most I have backed you get an update every week or every other week. If they don't want the updates they can turn off their notification. But don't use them as an reason not to update the rest of us. Because 1-2 updates a week if informative is worth the 1 update a month your doing now.
