The Banner Saga at PAX2013

Hi again backers!

It has been a nutso month! We've been crunching (no surprise there), to get a playable build for PAX, which starts on Friday. We released some press kits in preparation and Kotaku already posted a news story on it, with new screenshots! Crazy!

Check out the other screenshots here.

We wanted to share the PAX demo with all of our backers, so what we'll be doing is giving you a playthrough of the game and showing off the same thing that PAX attendants will be playing.

The bit I'm most excited about is that as we've always said, the game has a lot of choices to make. Real ones! So what I'm going to do is stop at major decisions and let everyone vote on what to do next. Even at the very beginning of the game you'll be making decisions that impact the entire story. I'll also be doing commentary as I play, showing off the new classes, abilities and enemies and giving more insight into gameplay.

Spoiler warning: this will be a playthrough of the first 30-50 minutes of the game (depending on what choices you make). It's worth noting that even if you participate your own playthrough may turn out very different.

We'll start this Saturday and keep doing videos every couple days until we've made our way through the story! Hope to see you there!

      #2. Not now, Alette!

I realize there are still optimizations to be made. However, if I may pick at an artistic point: I think that the art assets that aren't "cel-shaded", like the flags/banners in Factions and the framed fabric in the demo video (2:20"-2:43"), do not mesh well with the overall aesthetic. There is a definite dichotomy, and I would suggest to try and make those aspects of the art more like the "painterly" aesthetic that encompasses the rest of the game.

Also, am I the only one that thought Egil was rather chill the whole time the situation was being discussed; it just seemed odd that he was just standing there. They all kind of stand there... Not sure if more animation can be made to have the characters be more expressive in their faces and gestures; maybe make short "conversation" animations that correspond to subject matter? I realize that may be asking too much, but thought you'd like the input.

Game looks good, guys. Thank you. Take care.

Larry, the single player game is not out yet, it's still in development. It should be out by Mac and PC by the end of the year (fingers crossed). If you want to get a taste of the combat, the multiplayer "Banner Saga: Factions" game is free to download from Steam.

@Philomelle: Thanks! If anyone wanted to turn it into a memebase hit, that'd be great. We can use all the marketing we can get :)

Congratulations on almost hitting meme status with that archer's expression!

This is the most stunning game I've ever seen.

      That's great news :D

Sorry to hear you guys won't make it though.

Okay I'm going to have to ignore Banner Saga updates for a while then, no spoilers for me I want to be totally surprised! :)

    12. Celeir on August 28, 2013

Oh, don't want to see beginning of the game before release. But I'm going to see it )

    13. Ken Nakai on August 28, 2013

I'm going to be at PAX too. I guess it's better you're able to spend time working in the game rather than taking the time to deal with PAX which extends well beyond the four days of the expo. :)

@Dweezy: I'm sad to say we won't actually be at PAX ourselves, because we literally couldn't afford to take off time from working on the game. We do have an attendant there showing the game!

See you guys at PAX! I'll be there this weekend :) Anything special for backers who are PAX attendees too?!

@Bill Lefler It seems to be the same as when I first discovered this. What changed?

(Anyone else find the "making something for money" line amusing after Fractions was revealed to be "Free to Play"?)

    17. Bill Lefler on August 28, 2013

Wow. I guess you guys updated the video somewhere during the campaign. I backed pretty early -- that's not the video I saw when I found your kickstarter. It's all good... have fun at PAX.

    18. Céline .S. Sauvé on August 28, 2013

This seems... I don't know. It might be interesting? I suspect I'll just steer clear, though, and hope I'm around to enjoy the full game someday sooner than later.

Bill, they are the Dredge, rumored to be the main antagonists of the story.

@Jean: we're going to do a Let's Play of the first 30 minutes of the game in which you guys vote on what choice to make. PAX attendants don't get to take home demos of every game they see... we're showing it exclusively to backers.

@Bill: same guys from the Kickstarter pledge video:

I'm confused. Will we get the same thing as PAX attendants, i.e. a playable demo (which would be great) or just a video (which would be lame)?

    22. Bill Lefler on August 28, 2013

What's up with the glowy-eyed Aztec Robots?

    23. Stoic 2-time creator
      on August 28, 2013

@Ralph: unfortunately, releasing code in this state would be really dangerous on our part. We have a huge portion of the game done at this point and making a version where that content was removed (instead of simply cordoned off) would take time and be risky. It's not a standalone executable- it's a section of the complete game.

Would have been LOADS more fun, if the demo was released to the backers. Give us a taste of whats to come and perhaps help out guide some decision in the process.

Awesome!! Can't wait to see the demo!! :D
