Looking forward to the Linux release! It's been a while since the last update posted on Steam (Oct 2014) about it, but I'm glad to see a QA status update for it on this page.
It's, er, pretty strange that you released an announcement trailer for Banner Saga 2 but didn't share it here? Maybe an update is forthcoming?
Will part 2 from the Banner Saga become a Kickstarter?
Woohoo, Vita port confirmed now, THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!! :D
Just saw Banner Saga is coming to PS4, yay! Hoping to see a Vita version as well since it's the perfect game to play on the go! :D
We haven't really shared much about the next couple of games, but be sure to Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and check out our website often for updates. We're working on them now and will be posting updates soon.
Hey Stoic, hoping to hear about development for Chapter 2 and 3.
@Stoic: Why "backer only"? Do you have something to hide? Something to be ashamed of? I agree, "we are dealing with a few crashes", "we need to add in sound" and "we don’t have a date yet" are not much of an advertisement, especially after more than half a year after initial release and after iPhone release, but let's be honest and open here.
For those backers leaving comments about Linux - we just posted a backer only update with info for you.
For what it's worth I know they are working on "Episode 2" because Austin Wintory said on Twitter that he was recording music for the second game.
I think Linux is the least of the problems of this campaign. Just imagine all those backers waiting on any word on further development of "Episode 2 & 3".
And that slap in the face with DRM-free version, not to mention that whole "Factions" deal. As a project for me it is utter failure, even worse than actual failed projects since I didn't get what others got.
But in the grand scale it was a success since back then in 2012 we was in need of developer's attention and all that *declared* support of Linux turned other developers' attention to our platform. But times have changed. What worked back then will not do now.
As for this project? Well, we can live with that. Some will use Windows in dual-boot, others can use Wine, neither like the first time, nor like the last, sadly…
But we learned our lessons:
1) If it uses Adobe technologies -- avoid it;
2) If the release is promised "sometime later" -- avoid it.
Well, I wonder now: how many people gave their money because of that port-to-Linux-promise thing — just to realize slowly that they were ignored just from the moment when all transactions had been completed? To be more specific, I wonder: how much does it cost to turn the whole team to liars?
7 months of ignoring the people who funded you - full steam ahead for 12!
Hi there were is the Linux version I went to check for the DRM version and could not find it when will it be coming out?
Where do you plan to celebrate? May I join you? :-)
@Pegasus: Well, they said in update #6 that they'd be porting the game to Linux before the second part was released, so don't hold your breath.
BTW, congrats on hitting your 6-month not-telling-anybody-jack-about-the-Linux-version-you-were-promised milestone. Should we send cake?
BTW, you guys that sent the crest in late. Where can I find the template to make my own crest? Also, Stoic had said backer $50+ will get the next two Banner Saga games. Is that still true?
5 months, no news on Linux. Keep it up guys, I have faith you can keep us totally in the dark for at least half a year.
I missed the initial crest upload as well, but I did go and use the uploader. I haven't wanted to play without my crest (and I wasn't in a rush) and it was said they would try to put late crests into patches. Well I checked the recent patch today and my crest was in there! So Banner Saga here I come. Definitely email Stoic, I did and they told me it would get in there eventually (but they gave no ETA).
eXoScoriae, I'd e-mail Stoic at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have questions about uploading crests. But one of the devs just posted on the Banner Saga forums that he added 60 more Kickstarter backer crests to the most recent build, so they are still uploading crests to the game.
Aw crap - did I miss the chance to upload my crest into the game? I thought I had read it was going to be changed to something we did after we received the game? I guess that changed again?
4 months, no update on Linux. Or anything else, much.
A French retail version is announced on Amazon.FR ... Well, as a bowed version is everything I asked for when I back the game but was not planned as a reward, I think I "will have to" buy it again. :'(
any news about the linux port?
The Localization Beta Test is active now! For Deutsch, Français, ру́сский, Português, and Polski: http://steamcommunity.com/app/237990/discussions/0/540742667756899958/
Spanish is running a few weeks behind and will be in a patch soon after.
@Daryl Putman: Because Stoic wanted to make free-to-play-pay-to-win on-line Steam-bound game from the start? Well, it *may* not be true but it definitely looks like this. Just observe their official forums: there is "Factions Help & Support" sub-forum with "Looking for help or game support? You came to the right place!" description but *general* help and support sub-forum is nowhere to be found. Overall post statistics also does not favour singleplayer "expansion".
@Andrew Hows: Also counting this, yeah? My bet we will get "something" by the start of next year... (Under "something" I assume a byproduct of dubious quality most probably made by side people and without any support, see "Torchlight" for example).
My rule from now on to never deal with anything with Adobe technologies ever.
Maybe it was necessary to show developers our interest in order to convince them Linux is a good platform back then in 2012 by backing even shaky projects with "stretch goal, sometime after release, using wine wrapper," but it is not anymore. Nowadays outright ignore such projects.
That's a quarter of a year with no update on the Linux version.
I'm kind of disappointed that Banner Saga in the Humble Bundle today is the DRM-ladened Steam version. Why is Stoic pushing the Steam version on people when there's a more open version available?
Email email@example.com and they can probably help you.
Hello. I'm a 50$ backer who has been super busy with life for the last little while. I haven't redeemed/received anything (not the game, art book, wallpaper, sound track, or custom crest). What are my options now? I'd really like to immerse myself in the world of Banner Saga :)
Joe, the e-mail in the update was incorrect. You need to email firstname.lastname@example.org and they'll send you a GOG.com key. I wrote them last week and they sent me a key within a few days.
Hmm. The last updated mentioned GOG keys... I've sent a couple of emails to the address they gave but never got a response. Anybody have any idea/suggestions?
Any news on the custom crests for a "round two" update patch? I'm waiting to play with my crest and I figured they'd have the patch out by the time they uploaded to GoG.
I've been busy since this came out. It looks like the directions on receiving a copy of the game do not apply any more. Is it still too late?
I never received my game. What happened?
Another month, another no-updates-on-Linux-port.
Totaly happy with how the game come out, can't wait for the sequel, huge fans here in Croatia. At the same time we are having a huge local KS for an interesting SF strategy/RPG https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/947226117/the-red-solstice
I'm glad that I'm not the only wondering about the digital art book...
Hi there, is the digital art book already available somewhere ?
Just beat it. Fantastic ending.
So, no updates in over a month. What's the progress on the Linux version? Some of us are still waiting for the game we backed...
STILL waiting for that GOG key, guys. I want to play the game, but I'm not playing any version but the GOG version.
When will the digital Artbook come out?
There's an ongoing KS for a game called "Zaharia" It's an isometric, turn-based cRPG set in a fantasy world based on Middle Eastern culture. Lots of emphasis on choice and consequence. They have a playable pre-alpha prototype you can DL, too. I figure some Banner Saga backers might be interested in this game
@Roger van Velzen It's more like they initially provided the combat part so they could get feedback and balance their combat system but because it became so popular they decided to turn it into standalone free to play game to promote The Banner Saga. It may not be common but number of games have provided combat demos for testing (Worlds of Magic of magic and Age of Decadence being most recent ones I think).
@Vrungel They first developed the combat system which was tested and became Factions. That combat system then got the whole scenario built around it which became Act 1. I don't see that as delay just a choice in what to develop first.
@Vrungel that has also been my unfortunate experience with the games I've backed on Kickstarter so far...
I'd also add to your list:
-Being forced to start the Saga with an army filled with a species I _hated_ having anywhere near my army in the time I'd tried Factions.
Though my main annoyance is the fact that one of my units died in the early fights and the narrative made absolutely no mention of it.
As for the Trademark thing, I found a contact form in one of the news articles and sent the following to King:
"You guys are more than a little disgusting in the fact that you're using the fact that so many fell into your "Free to Play" traps to try to BUY parts of the English Language! Especially parts the never even began in English! Like, oh, I don't know, "Saga," for example.
"Let's hope the US legal system eventually catches up to such tricks and awards 100% legal costs to the Davids of the world when Goliaths get too big for their britches."
Yes, it is grammatically iffy, but they'll just ignore it anyway. For them to _not_ get away with this BS would require those who actually live in the US to contact their reps and let them know that they want the laws changed and they'll support that view with their votes in the next election. Generally, though not always, US politicians do put their actual office above the bribes (uh "contributions") bigger companies might give them.
[And, yes, that's the last of any political content that will be in my comments, but it needed to be said after the mention of this in the last update...]
I was playing this for the last couple of weeks and I'm fairly disappointed:
- first is significant delay with single player release in favor of multiplayer factions (don't care about those, would't have backed the game if I knew that would be the case)
- very weird, annoying save model - why I can not simply restart the fight? Instead I need to load previous save point which can be few dialogs away!
- inability to skip long meaningless cinematics. Yes, watching moving caravan for a minute or so is cool first 10 times but then it becomes an annoyance.
It's amazing how few badly made decisions can ruin experience of otherwise not a bad game.
I have to say, knowing what I know now I would never have backed this project. This does teaches me an important lesson, from this point on I'm unlikely to back up another game. I'd rather wait extra time and pay few extra dollar on Steam (or whatever) after reading reviews and watching gameplay.
Just spotted it on GOG as well, and then checked the Q&A to confirm that we should be able to get it either there or via some other method:
Will The Banner Saga be DRM-free? (Spoiler: yes) Isn't something like Steam technically DRM?
DRM-free = yes. We have no intention of installing invasive software on your computer.
You will always have the option of downloading a standalone version of the game to play on your hard drive, if you prefer not to use services like Steam.
