Santa Leocadia is a late Romanesque Church from the 13th Century located on the margins of a historical path. It was abandoned at the beginning of the 20th Century and it soon fell into oblivion, suffering a continuous process of decay.
Four years ago, a group of friends, devotees of the ruins, rediscovered the temple and decided to create an association to rescue the place from its century-old lethargy.
We set up a project to enhance Santa Leocadia, promoting the knowledge of its history and ensuring the best conditions for use and enjoyment by any audience.
These actions include:
- Archeological excavation.
- Rebuilding of the apse's vault.
- Consolidating the walls.
- And developing an area under protection, which includes the old dextrum and the medieval necropolis.
Santa Leocadia is an outstanding example of the making of Cantabrian landscape and it is still possible to make a reading of the medieval territorial organization. It is, therefore, an important part of our heritage and a place of memory, and we aim to make it a venue for art and culture, without forgetting local traditions.
We are convinced that this initiative will contribute to invigorate the life of this rural area. We have the support of the local authorities, the inhabitants and sympathizers; we have the technical expertise, but we need to find the economic resources to achieve our goal.
Please, help us to make this dream come true.

Risks and challenges
As any civil works are summited to legislation, town hall and college of architects are collaborating in the project. Minimizing eventual problems or delays.
As every old building, new defects on the structure can appear, increasing the costs or generating unexpected delays. The building has been deeply evaluated by experts (architects, engineers) that have generated the technical project minimizing these possible risks.
The future use of the building as promoting a center of the cultural life of the valley can be compromised if not properly integrated into the social life. The project has involved the town hall, other cultural association of the valley as the Asociación de Valles Pasiego, Grupo Alceda and extensive information of the local stakeholders.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
