We're bringing the Peoples Joy Parade back to the Cherokee St. Cinco de Mayo festival, now for the 4th year in a row!

The Art Processional along el Calle Cherokee @ 1:11pm on May 5th, 2012

The People's Joy Parade is a grassrootsdiverse, processional of crepe paper float makershome made costume fashionistasb-boys/girlsmidnight minstrelsGigante puppeteers, low-riders, bike brigadesmoving installation artists, Elvis impersonators, cardboard bricoleursrainbow dancers, knights of St. Louis, drag queens, beat making high school marching bandsMexican wrestlersgalleries in a minivanimprovised hurdy gurdies, Virgins of Guadalupe, walking personifications of Commodore's tunes, and any other lost members of the Missouri tribe. Things get bigger and better every year! Many new faces continue to shine bright as our project gains momentum.

People's Joy Parade 2011 was voted #1 Parade in STL in the Riverfront Times!

Imagine the fantastic creations of Chererokee street coming together, people of all ages, shapes and sizes....splashes of color and smiling faces!

We are doing it again in 2012! People in Saint Louis love a good time, and want to make our Parade an enduring tradition!  While each year has presented challenges in making ends meet, first with a small arts grants, and then with 3 successful Kickstarter campaign  the last  3 years, this year we Paraders are stretching to fill our grown-up shoes.  We're bringing the same Gigante puppets, the Footbeat choir, the educational workshops, and the carnival of home-spun curiosities, but this year also offers new challenges like a parade permit and event insurance. This year People's Joy Parade will be colaborating with the Cinco de Mayo festival on Cherokee street to raise additional funds to cover increased expenses due to budget cuts! Please help us continue to make our festival an amazing site to behold for years to come.

We will use our Kickstarter funds to compensate artists and parade organizers for their work, for materials used in puppet/costume creation, for printed flyers/posters, and also  for the logistical administrativa like permits.  Although the spirit and soul of this parade can fit on no budget, we are committed to making the act of parade a recurring phenomenon that slowly morphs our ancient St. Louis streetscape into something unique and hard to describe!

Like last year, we'll post updates here on our parade prep throughout April at The Community Arts and Movement Project, including GIGANTES WORKSHOPS (giant puppets!), FOOTBEAT practices (a feel-good, sing-a-long walking group of costumed crooners ), and the COSTUME SHOP (inviting neighborhood kids to amp their character!).
