About this project
KICKSTARTER STAFF PICK!
Stinky Robots is a children's book (but enjoyable for any age) that teaches the importance of respecting all members of the communities we live in. Great for you, great for your kids, grandkids, or anyone you know who loves comics, amazing graphics and a good story.
Our story takes place in the timeless future present. We see 1950 cars, but we also see rockets. We see people wearing simple clothing, and some in futuristic outfits. Robots have continued along their current path of helping humans do things faster and more efficiently. Our robots don't fight - they landscape, they cook you dinner, they put out fires.
The world of robots has diverged into 2 distinct camps - FutuRobots, the hitech marvels of computerized sophistication; and Stinky Robots the mechanical robots of yesteryear.
FutuRobots are the cool kids of robots. They are the robots that are the fastest, most technically advanced, best software, sleekest looking. Stinky Robots move a bit slower, run on mechanical parts, gears and pulleys, or stinky fuels like diesel (bio-diesel for the ecominded).
Stinky Robots are looked down on by society and FutuRobots. They just can't perform the way the FutuRobots do.
But then, one day, tragedy strikes in the form of an Electronic Magnetic Pulse attack (an EMP) and everything that runs on electricity, and all things electronic SHUT DOWN.
See where we are going here? It is at this critical moment that our Stinky Robots are called upon to save the day...
More about our Story
Stinky Robots is a love story told through robots. It is a story of the importance of loving and respecting all the diverse and unique members of our communities.
I told it to my eldest son Isaac when he was younger and then, after many years, I began telling it again to my youngest son Elijah. And then the magic of the internet stepped in...
My son Elijah and I wrote the story down, adding new touches to the original story. And then we reached out to 12 fantastic artist from around the world to start bringing our robots to life. Each day my son would wake up and say "Dad, do we have any new robots?" And we did!
Our robots were created in Russia, the Philippines, Spain, Canada, Macedonia, Argentina and Indonesia. It's been an amazing experience!
Once we had our full roster of Stinky Robots and FutuRobots created by our 12 fantastic artist, we began working with one of our artists to create a consistent look and feel for our book.
This is where you come in! Matt and Elijah have written the final version of the book and our artists have created the robots, and we've worked together to develop each robot's personality and skills.
And now one of our Artist, Nikola from Macedonia, is working to put the final version of the book together. And Daniel, from Canada, is helping us with the final layout.
2 Authors, 12 artists, book layout and publishing... right now it is a labor of love. But with your help it will be a finished product!
Thank you so much for supporting the arts and for supporting our dream of bringing these amazing robots to life! You can see all of our robots, and the names of all of our artists at www.stinkyrobots.com. And keep up with our progress by liking our facebook page: www.facebook.com/stinkyrobots.

On behalf of all of us people, and robots, from around the world, a big thanks!

*New* Facebook and Twitter shout outs to all reward levels!
Information about Production Costs:We are STRONG believers in paying folks a fair wage. So we did not negotiate with ANY of our artists and we did not tell them how long to take creating their robots or working with us to develop each's robots unique skills and abilities. We also paid the artist that made the music you heard, and who edited the video we created. This project has been a labor of love, we LOVE this story, and we LOVE our artists. We have already spent $7,000+ to get this far. Kickstarter is an "all or nothing campaign", so at this point our goal reflects just recovering our costs.
Support the arts and our artists by helping make this project a success! Thank you!
And now we'd like to do something a little crazy!
5 Million Dollar (give or take) Special Offer
Note: Kickstarter has a $10,000 limit, we tried to enter 5 million as a reward option, but they weren't having it.
Special Note to John Lasseter:
Pixar - this one's for you!
We are willing to sell our brand spanking new company, Stinky Robots LLC, stinkyrobots.com, futurobots.com, all robot characters, all rights, this, our first book (after we deliver it to all of our new friends on kickstarter) and anything else we or your lawyers (we don't have one - we did the LLC online) can think of relating to these characters and our new company.
Look, we love Disney, we love Star Wars, we love Toy Story, and we don't have any idea how to make an animated movie! We are made for each other! Pixar, we are your neighbor, right over the Richmond bridge in Bolinas (near Stinson Beach, but don't tell anyone we said so). Call us John Lasseter, we're serious, we'd really love for you guys to take our dream to the next level. And, either way, we'd love for you to buy us lunch. We know a great taco place in Berkeley.
Dear Kickstarter - thanks for letting us include this note! We hope it generates some good publicity for both of us! And maybe a new Pixar movie! :)
Risks and challenges
Our robots have all been created. The book is written. We are now doing the final page illustrations. So things look very promising! Now we just need you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Question we received from a sponsor "how many pages is the book? are all pages full color? can you give us a better sense of the story?
The book is approximately 15 pages (it's still in progress so the final number isn't locked in yet). Yes, all the pages are in color. And we are trying to keep some of the details of the book a secret, but their exists 2 types of robots - Stinky and FutuRobots, and as a result of an attack, the FutuRobots are rendered inoperative, thus the Stinky Robots are needy to step in and save us all. Hope that helps answer your questions!
