Allow us to introduce ourselves; we are the Initium foundation , a non-profit organisation of filmmakers from the Netherlands. We’re also a bunch of geeks. We’ve been masquerading vampires, we’ve seen dragons in dungeons, we’ve found paths and we even killed puppies for Satan.( Seriously, check that one out. It’s hilarious.) At the time of writing we are post producing our previous project called Last Redemption (an interactive thriller). Still, we hunger for the next project to sink our teeth in. We’re on the hunt for a new thrill, we have our arrows aimed at this epic.
For the last year we have been writing, endlessly tinkering and perfecting a story about a subject we love; roleplaying games. From the beginning it was clear to us that our tale was best told in the form of a web series. You grow more attached to your characters week after week going to sessions and slinging dice. We are positive that you will grow attached to our protagonists (and antagonists even more so) episode after episode. Our story follows a group of adventurers hailing from a region aptly named the Claw. Through various campaigns the players have explored the GM's homebrew setting and shared the land's intrigues and battles. The Claw has always been secluded from the rest of the world by a mysterious barrier and the players have been left in the dark about what is behind it. Until now, of course.
It’s all quite nice on paper, isn’t it? But you’re not here for quite nice, you’re here for great. We are more than willing to provide that for you. In fact we are already able to show you our pilot episode, something we shot without a budget.
Intrigued? I know we are. We have lifted the veil here but we can only go Beyond the Barrier by working together on this project!
Let's define the word "together"
On this page the word “we” shows up quite a lot. Chances are that you imagine the cast and crew. Let’s expand that view.
When you read “we” imagine that cast and crew but also yourself and hundreds, perhaps even thousands of other roleplayers. People who share the same passion and enthusiasm for our hobby.
Yes, we are asking funds for a great web series but there is a second goal that we have in mind. It is to create a mirror in which we can all see ourselves and celebrate what we love. It doesn’t matter what game or edition you play, nor if you’re a game master, player or just a spectator.
Our hobby is thriving and deserves recognition!
It is our ambition to form a community of roleplay enthusiasts who will collaborate with us on this project. The lands beyond the barrier are vast and unexplored, the cultures varied. Let’s fill in the map, let’s make something great. Together.
The story has been written, we have people ready to create the costumes and special effects. We are ready to go, all we need is your help. The funds are needed to transform all the effort we have invested into a truly great experience for you guys. Everyone on this project participates because they love film making and roleplaying games. No one is on salary. Every donation will be put into the value of the product we want to share with you! Together we can make this celebration of our wonderful hobby a reality.
A project such as this is an expensive endeavor and there are a lot of costs involved. After numerous budget meetings with our wise treasurer we have concluded that the €4000 goal is needed to deliver a worthy product. Here we provide a diagram to give you insight in how the funds will be divided.
Costumes & props: The bread and butter of the production. Our effort and script will be wasted if our production looks like an elementary school play. The look and feel of the characters and their surroundings plays a great part in drawing you into the story.
To achieve this we need money for raw materials so we can create the necessary costumes and props.
To save costs we will create as much of the costumes as possible ourselves alongside a team of capable seamtresses, larpers and cosplayers. This means that we can garb a numerous cast!
The metalwork will still need to be bought and anyone who has spend time at a fantasy fair, larping or re-enacting will now that comes with a price tag. Still, after careful budgeting we have formulated a plan to equip our world without taxing our donators too much.
On a different note.. We understand that for some of our fans donating your hard earned cash may not be possible. Is there still a way to help out? Of course! If you have costumes or props that you don't use and want to donate to a good cause or if you have another creative way to help then contact us at email@example.com! If there is one thing we are good at it's finding new ways to work together.
Also let's not forget the impact that sharing this campaign with your friends may have!
For the next seven months we will abide a busy schedule but everything is set so that we can reach our 2016 deadline!
Don't worry, we'll keep you company during the long wait. To keep you informed about what is going on we will provide weekly updates each Wednesday night. You can find these developer blogs here on Kickstarter or on the Beyond the Barrier Facebook page. If you've got a burning question that can't wait until Wednesday feel free to contact us through KS or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
So what will happen during those seven months?
This month is all about the Kickstarter. We will mostly spend our time replying to feedback and questions as well as promoting our campaign at various gaming stores throughout the Netherlands. (We would love to visit international stores as well but we're out of scrolls of teleportation.) While some of our crew are devoted to promoting another department is casting the last characters and arranging more locales for filming.
Our planning requires us to reach our goal by June 4th. Only then will the money be transfered in time without interfering with our shooting schedule!
June to September 2015
This is where most of the cool stuff happens. While the camera rolls and after our director has yelled for action we will fight, jump, maneauver and act our way to succes!
The first few weeks we will mostly be filming the 'out of character' stuff while our costume department works their magic. Soon enough we will have the adventurers on (digital) tape!
When we're not shooting we will prepare the material for post production!
October to December 2015
After having shot the final scene in September and with the ground work for editing already laid out we can start post production. This is where we add the music, special effects and other fancy stuff to each episode. The cold months are also the time when we will finalize the rewards. The dicebags will be sewn, the DVD's will be burned, we will arrange the dates for online games with our backers!
We will enter the new year with the premiere of episode two and the shipping of all the rewards. This is where we can congratulate each other on a job well done and celebrate with the newly formed community! (We're talking about you, here.) For the next nine weeks you can expect an episode until the season reaches its climax in episode ten!
To stengthen the bond between us and our donators we have opted for a personalized reward system. A lot of the rewards incorporate your ideas and input! Feel free to send us the necessary information through a private message here on kickstarter or an e-mail to email@example.com.
There are also some bonuses involved. These do not accumulate but you will receive the benefit of the bonus only if it is listed with your highest pledge. These are extras.

Bonus: Something very special that we won't tell the others...
About those bonuses: As with the "Become immortalized" reward we will (if neccesary) modify your ideas to better fit the story. Also keep in mind that the rules of both Kickstarter and Youtube should be upheld when it comes to unpleasant topics.
Risks and challenges
We are situated within the Netherlands which means that there's no magical way to ship rewards for free. We do however offer worldwide shipping, but keep in mind that there will be added shipping costs outside of the Netherlands and outside the Eurozone.
We are not the first people to create RPG inspired films. There are a bunch of succes stories, from The Gamers, Standard Action and Walking in Circles for example. A lot of great work has been done so that means that we have to take some extra measures to ensure a compelling product. We do this by playing with themes, situations and character types not seen in other productions. We know this by having watched our colleageus extensively. (Another perk of the job!)
While keeping in mind what others are doing we are able to provide just that new story you needed.
Half of our filming will be done outdoors and the Netherlands isn't known for it's spectacular weather. Luckily we have a flexible schedule to deal with rainy mishaps! Also our cast and crew are die hards who don't mind pushing through some bad weather.
