Introducing the Raven Defender
My name is Steve Laughlin and I have been designing and manufacturing high quality limited production dive watches since 2008 under my company STEVRAL INC. Over the years we have been successful, selling out of every wrist watch we have produced.
For this project I am partnering with Kickstarter in hopes that we can grow our customer base and increase our production numbers. This exceptional new watch design at the price point we are offering is one way that we hope to reach our goal.
The Raven Defender features an easy to read dial and bezel layout that resembles analog cockpit instruments and vintage military wrist watches. The steel case has the added bonus of being water resistant to 300 meters and features a bi-directional rotating inner bezel for tracking elapsed time.
This steel case is a new design, created by Steve and Ralf (STEVRAL INC.) and refined over the last few months with various 3D drawings and production samples from our factory. The case is available in brushed, sand blasted, a black DLC finish, or a unique brass case that will show age over time with patina.
The Raven Defender features flat sapphire on the front and the back. Everything on the watch has been rounded off and smooth so there are no sharp angles to the case, crowns, or lugs. The 42mm case with a 20mm strap accentuates the circle shape of the case.
Inside the watch you will find the robust and reliable Miyota 9015 mechanical automatic movement. This movement is made by Citizen Japan and has a high beat rate of 28,800 BPH, that translates to 8 ticks per second. The movement is operated by the lower crown at 4:00, it can be hand wound and also features a hacking function for the second hand. The power reserve is 30-40 hours and the rotor is signed with the Raven shield.
Above and below you can see the Raven Defender with a sand blasted matte finish. Sand blasting the steel takes the shine and reflections out and creates a smooth light grey finish. The crown at 4:00 has been unscrewed to show 1 of 3 rubber gaskets that are inside the crown. Also notice in these pictures the 20mm wide natural rubber strap.
The Raven Defender can also be ordered with a DLC black coating. The DLC, or Diamond-Like Carbon, is a strong black coating added to the surface of the steel. It is the strongest coating that we technically know how to do. The coating can be damaged with hard impacts and abuse. Personally I think the coating wears well over the years, even with damage. It does not flake off like paint, rather it breaks in more like coated tools or firearms that have seen use. Below you can see the DLC coated Raven Defender.
The Raven Defender has a pleasing case shape. When you pick it up it feels good in the hands, and with downward curved lugs it is comfortable on the wrist.
The Raven Defender is also available in a brass case. This material will age over time, changing in color based on the unique conditions of each owner. Humidity, oxygen, sweat, salt, and sun all play a part in the aging.
*note - all brass watch case backs will be blasted stainless steel (not titanium). I made a mistake when adding the reward and now I can't change it. I am asking Kickstarter to change it for me over the next few days.
For the luminous material on the dial, hands, and bezel, we are using a Swiss product from Superluminova called C3. This is the brightest and highest quality lume that is available at this time. We apply several layers of this lume to increase the intensity and longevity of the glow.
You will be able to choose between the rubber or the leather strap. The image below are sample straps and the finished buckles will look a bit different in shape and will match the watches finish. These straps will also be added to the Raven website if you wish to purchase both or extra straps. If we reach 250 backers then every watch will ship with both straps.
The computer images below show the dial colors we are going to produce. The color can vary on all the different screens and devices out there, so know that we have carefully chosen the blue and grey color and are using color samples to have the factory match the color. Also note that the drawing is not a perfect representation of the watch, please refer to the images above when looking at the dial printing, hands, and bezel numbers.
You will choose your dial color and case finish with a survey at the end of the 30 day Kickstarter fundraising period if you are a backer.
We will update this page when we have photos of the dials to share.
The Raven Defender will continue with the Raven format of numbering each piece. Raven has a continuously running serial number through all the models, so the Defender series will begin with number 650 and continue from there. It is not possible to choose a number, it is unlikely that the number you are looking for also matches the dial color and case finish that you like.
These images below show how the steel case, sapphire, crowns, and gaskets come together to form a water tight tool watch capable of withstanding deep water pressure to 300 meters. I simplified these images with color to show the important parts of the case and design.
The image above shows the crown at 4:00 that operates the movement. This crown has rubber gaskets and also screws down to the case. The image below shows the crown at 2:00 that operates the internal bezel. The bezel crown also uses rubber gaskets and is operational at all times.
Below you can see the 42mm Raven Defender side by side with some familiar 42mm dive watches. 3 Defender watches are shown below compared with a Seiko SKX007, a Benarus Moray 42, and a Tudor Pelagos.
On the Wrist
These images show the Raven Defender on my wrist. For reference, my wrist is 6.5 inches in diameter. The 42mm case with the 49mm lug to lug make this a perfect size to wear.
If we reach 250 backers, the leather strap and the rubber strap will ship with every watch. Please spread the word about this project by visiting our website, download and share the images on social media.

Risks and challenges
My company, STEVRAL INC. has been producing Benarus and Raven watches in small quantities since 2008. We have a factory partner who is ready to start producing the Raven Defender and have them ready by Spring of 2016. We will begin production as soon as this KickStarter project has ended. At that time we will know more about the production timeline.
We will be posting news about this project here as well as on our website, our news blog, and our Facebook page, so you will always know where we are at with this process.
