Okinawa Rush - A pixel-art fighting/platform game for PC and consoles.
Inspired by platformers & beat-em-ups from the 90's with modern fighting game mechanics.
This is an intense, skill-based game with many moves to master and hordes of enemies to battle, set for release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
One of the core elements of this game was the idea of being able to "parry anything" including traps and projectiles - if timed correctly!
- Unique fighting engine & huge move set.
- Engaging story told with hand illustrated, cinematic cut-scenes in a pixel-art style.
- Many different enemies each with their own moves and weapons.
- Intense boss battles!
- Parry any attacks, projectiles and traps!
- Choose a training Dojo and decorate it with our Feng Shui item system to increase your hero's powers.
- High scores are uploaded to the okinawarush website.
- Secret areas, easter-eggs and mysteries to discover.
- Local co-op mode. Engage in unique co-op combos to defeat enemies.
A Ruthless army of ninjas known as the Black Mantis clan have come to Okinawa to loot, pillage and kill anyone that gets in their way. Above all else, they are searching for the legendary training scroll of Hiro Yashima who has honed his martial skill to supernatural level, summoning flame and sound to vanquish his foes.
He returns home one night to find his children missing, his wife slain, and a note in her bloody hand...
“Come, find me in the shadows beyond the sea and show me what you are capable of."
The main playable character of the game is a master of Karate; a style of martial-art that originated from Okinawa (an island close to Japan). That said, this game is not intended to be historical and has no connection to historical events or real people. We prefer to keep it this way as it allows for more fantastical possibilities and room for creativity. Its really an alternative reality and as such you will see some references to Okinawan/Japanese names, food and objects.
Okinawa Rush is about intense, skillful gameplay -including "just frame" commands. It is also intuitive enough for someone completely new to games to be able to pick up and immediately get into the action.
Playable characters; Hiro, Meilin and Shin can perform many moves to defeat their enemies. Our recent edition, Meilin is currently being developed and at this point is unavailable to play in the demo.
As with Hiro and Shin, she will have her own backstory but with a different fighting style, utilising Wing Chun kung fu and some elements of Tai chi Chaun in combat. Instead of being able to project fireballs she will have a bladed fan that she can throw and use to decapitate enemies in devastating finishing moves.
The following video shows how multiple players can perform tag-team moves:
Shin has the same move set as Hiro, but he will also be developed to have his own unique moves to play with.
You can see a list of some of Hiro and Shin's moves below. Much of the combat is inspired by old, arcade classics such as 'Double Dragon' and 'Streets of Rage' along with some more modern influences from Tekken and Streetfighter.
The black mantis clan have a variety of weapons that can be used against them. There will be secret areas in each stage where the goddess of the Island resides. Give up your weapon to her and you will be rewarded . . .
There is a shop in OkinawaRush presented to the player via a traveling merchant whom switches between 3 different areas (beach, woodlands and cherry-blossom island), each offering slight variations on items, depending on location.
Players can put in a 'special request' to the merchant for rarer items to appear in his store.
Items include new suits, colour dyes (for suit and hair to customise) rare amulets which boost stats and also equipment and ornaments to place within the dojo you have built.
DOJO AND FENG SHUI SYSTEM
Ornaments found or bought from the shop can be placed within your dojo, using a "pick and drop" system.
If certain combinations are placed together they create a "Feng Shui Bonus" which can force the stats of your character to go beyond their natural training potential.
For example 3 bonsai trees together will give a boost to your HP.
There are many different combinations to discover, some which may unlock hidden skills in your character!
We think Okinawa Rush has great potential and we have worked hard developing the core gameplay, graphics and sound to be a unique and quality experience.
The formula is there, the engine is running, now all we need is more content to build on what we have already...
The basic plan:
- 5 stages each with 2 sections
- one boss per stage plus mid-boss
- Many different enemy characters
- Each stage will be packed with detailed scenery, secret areas, loot to collect and rammed with intense combat.
- The story will unfold with more cut-scenes between stages.
- We aim to have multiple endings depending on how you play the game, one boss per stage plus mid-boss with unique enemies.
The game currently has working 2 player coop mode (disabled in demo) and we may extend this to include online (as we have made online games before).

Risks and challenges
We are passionate and committed to this project and are working hard to make this game the best it can be.
Our aim is to have Okinawarush completed before the end of 2017 and we have already received the "Greenlight" from Steam so all that is left is to finish making the game.
The money that we raise from Kickstarter will allow us to work full time on the project and hire artists to help with animation and new stages.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
