Twenty-one (21) years in the making! (So to speak.)

Family fun game nights return for a new generation of families and children. #GigglesAssuredRule #1. TURN OFF YOUR CELLPHONES!

Backfire by Kodel ~ ADVANCED PLAY

Introduce your project. Tell people why they should be excited about your project.

Be clear and be brief!

The Initial Object of the Game is to be the first player to match your section of the game board with your matching multicolored dice. Once declared the Home Row Winner (Homer) the twist begins. Watch out for a Backfire!

The Ultimate Object of the Game is to win all the chips, points, money you can muster! It’s how you get there that’s fun & exciting, thrilling even…and when a Backfire occurs, everyone yells, "BACKFIRE!"

I would love to bring Backfire to a new generation of families so they can gather around the kitchen table enjoying family fun game nights playing my game. #QualityTime

Hi, my name is Steve. Let me state right up front. I have Arrested Development. I'm either an idiot savant or just a man-child. I created a Comic Strip from thin air which ran for five (5) years in Southern Oregon newspapers. I ended the strip as those little boxes were so confining. I needed to write more. So, I began my 2nd career as a children's author. I see the world a tad differently than most. Please don't take offense as none is intended. Just roll with it. Most of what I say is tongue & cheek.

And if all of this cross-branding of my children's books and game pieces confuses you, well, that just says more about you than me. I'm trying to raise money here. If I have to hock my wares to get this project funded, that's what I'm going to do.

And just because I don't take myself seriously, doesn't mean I can't produce. I will be an excellent steward of your nickels and dimes and get this game manufactured!

Moving on...I retired from the Air Force on New Year's Eve 1993, at age 40, to raise my three young sons as a single parent. I created the board game Backfire in 1998 just as the internet and video gaming were just taking off and board games were waning.  So, I just put it in the closet where it has aged to perfection.  Some may tease that it looks homemade, old fashion or bush league even. That's perfectly fine. The NBA began with peach buckets for baskets for crying out loud.

What IS important is the method of play. Does it have staying power? Is it unique over it's competition, absolutely. Is it innovative, fun, creative? Yes it is. And, it's timeless...

Yes, my game is handcrafted from ordinary items found around the house or in craft stores. Look, I once got stuffed horsey head on a stick for Christmas. That's how things were done in the olden days. Don't judge me too harshly. I'm not a professional project game presenter. I've not been invited to Shark Tank. This isn't that. Sharks ONLY want a business that's already earning tons of money. I only want your loose change. (It adds up!)

Then I can give you ALL what you want, a way, way, much better game than say, Yahtzee or Backgammon, Checkers or Scrabble even. Backfire is fun because of the game play!

The Golden Grail: Original Concept Drawing. Perhaps, one day, auctioned for millions. Any bidders?
The Golden Grail: Original Concept Drawing. Perhaps, one day, auctioned for millions. Any bidders?

I'm presenting my original board game as it was first envisioned. This is not a stop on the carnival circuit where I try to impress you with slight of hand or fabulous graphics. There is a bit of Tomfoolery however. I'm not interested in creating a video so you can watch live action play as has been suggested. For crying out loud.

If slick art, song and dance and jumping through hoops is what impresses you, just leave your money on the night stand and move along. It is what it is. Period.

It goes without saying, yet I will. I want to use my successful Kickstarter funding to hire a game design team to manufacture a professional game we can ALL be proud of...though, I could just sell you my nifty game play instructions for all you Ikea & DYI types. Hmmm. (That's not a bad Reward idea.) Look for it on Rewards once I finish here!

While my game uses colored tongue depressors, Popsicle sticks & flash cards, it's really the mechanics of game play that makes Backfire fun. The clay poker chips are a nice touch! Besides, you wouldn't want me using plastic soda straws right?

GAME COMPONENTS ~ Beginner to Advanced Play
GAME COMPONENTS ~ Beginner to Advanced Play

Physical Game Components include but may differ somewhat from a final, professionally manufactured game or cost prohibitive factors:

Multiple Game Boards

Multiple Colored Dice

Dice Pit

Multicolored Dice Pips

Multicolored Playing Chips

Multicolored Smaller Sticks known as Bridges

Multicolored Larger Sticks known as Overpasses

Players: Two to six players, age 10 and up. (Of course parents can modify for younger players.) Dice are a known choking hazard. Supervision highly encouraged.

Tile Play. Twister with Dice.

FOUR (4) Game Boards to choose from.

Game Board 1: 36 Multicolored dice images in a six row alignment.

Game Board 2: Same board with dice images in alternating alignment.

Game Board 3: 36 Multicolored dice images not aligned but scattered.

Game Board 4: 36 Multicolored dice images are printed on individual flash cards (tiles). Players can devise random board game layout patterns. Tiles change the topographical landscape as dice are being stacked & bridges & overpasses are being strategically placed on top of dice in order to maximize or hinder the point value of other players. Sticks are not recommended for expanded tile play. You're going to need much longer paint stirring sticks.

The small dots found on common six-sided die are called pips. These pips are typically arranged in patterns denoting the numbers one through six. Backfire dice pips are colored blue, black, purple, yellow, green, red in equal numbers on 36 dice. (If we meet our funding goal, before manufacturing, I’d like to add more colors, more players, such as pink, brown, gray, orange, etc.)

Believe me when I tell you, I had no idea where this game would go as I was creating it. If you think it's confusing now, you should have been in my head at the time.  I was on a shoestring budget so yes, it's sort of tacky but the end result works and I'm very proud of it.

I only recently thought about Backfire again now that my first grandson Dylan, is turning 9, and realizing crowdfunding as a real possibility to take it to the next level letting the professionals have a go at it. Everything can be improved. The genesis of Backfire was to simply satisfy my curiosity and creative side. I had no idea where it would lead me...

Did you hear the one about a Cigar Box who becomes a Backfire Dice Pit and the rest is history!

A Dice Pit is used because the "actual" game Board is being used to stack dice, place bridges and overpasses. And by 'stacking' dice I mean physically on top of each other.

A perfect dice pit can be found in most homes!

The first dice roll places dice on level one of the game board matching the board images. The first player to cover their six die images on level one is declared the HOMER! This is when the next phase of the game begins…

(Note: It may take two hands to toss your dice.)
(Note: It may take two hands to toss your dice.)

It's not as easy as you might think to simply cover 1-6 in your color on the board. That's where the stacking comes in. It may take several rolls until a Player covers their Home Row.

This is just pretty art.
This is just pretty art.

Until a Player covers their Level One Home Row, dice rolls oftentimes have duplicating results. These dice must be stacked on the board. If Level One already has a die on the board, matching multicolored dice pips are physically stacked on top of their matching counterparts. (A purple 5 is stacked on top of existing purple 5 levels vertically.)

Think of Dice Pip Colors like a Rubik’s Cube. Each side is different, until they're not.

This is where Bridges and Overpasses come in to play.

Bridges are for Advanced Game Play
Bridges are for Advanced Game Play

Colored Bridges are another way to raid or inhibit other Players from acquiring points while helping you build point values. Colored bridges, if used strategically, allow players to capture other players' stacked dice points at any height during the game from one to six dice levels high. Be nimble. Be quick. Don’t let your Bridge sticks tip.

Building Bridges is an art form...You gotta use the right pieces--at the right time.

OVERPASSES are for Advanced Game Play
OVERPASSES are for Advanced Game Play

Overpasses: The game takes some dexterity. Players can also create Overpasses to gain points as long as they don't touch an existing Bridge or stacked dice below. An Overpass is simply a Bridge at a different height but above an existing Bridge. An Overpass trumps a Bridge! All points are now conveyed to the Overpasses' owner. Hence all the colors. This distinguishes Players. Your color is your game piece. Since dice can be stacked six tall, a player could conceivably Bridge or Overpass at every level. If you wait too long to place a Bridge or Overpass, a Homer could be declared locking in all point values.

Bridges & Overpasses come in two lengths & six colors associated with Players & game colors matching Home Rows to accommodate game play on various game boards.

Bridges and Overpasses aren’t normally used with the Flash Card playing Tiles as they’re just not long enough. Though, paint stirring sticks might just work...Hmmm.

Chaperone: You may select a Chaperone each time you start a new game. The Chaperone will distribute the scoring dice and make any rulings when necessary. The Chaperone’s word is final.

FOOL’S POT: This is really an exciting added game feature, likely because of my affinity for Roulette (hence the upgraded, clay poker chips). The Fool's Pot is a chip or money 'pot' in which everyone contributes throughout the game based on a very specific twist. Depending on individual point rolls using the Jumbo game die & a game multiplier, pots can grow quickly. Pots can also carry over to subsequent games if no player wins the pot. Any player can attempt to claim the pot during a game but it may “Backfire” on them.

You just gotta believe...Backfire by Kodel. Now pony up your allowance and let's get this done.

Thank you for allowing me to share my Backfire board game with you. And thank you for helping fund this project on Kickstarter. It's a BIG ASK I know.

Risks and challenges

The challenge here is to manufacture the board game as "Made in America." While it may be cost prohibitive, I intend to find a way if it's at all possible and/or practical. It's labor intensive coloring each dot on each die differently. Eventually, I would like to license my board game so I can get back to writing my children's books. My ultimate desire is to use my books & game royalties to build Camp Tenderheart.
