Gem Blenders 💎 The Card Game
Pick your team. Customize a deck. Blend some gems.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Tue, December 3 2019 4:59 AM UTC +00:00.
Gem Blenders is an expandable card game designed and illustrated by Steve Sekula.
We’re launching this campaign to fund a first edition print run. With your support, not only will you receive these cards, but you'll join the Gem Blenders community. As we continue to develop this project, we will involve the community as we create additional sets of cards and expand the lore.
Ask any questions, learn about the project, and follow along. We love Gem Blenders and are dedicated to crafting the best possible player experience!
Gem Blenders is a community-based project that has been in development for almost 2 years. Without playtesting and feedback from members of the community, it would be impossible to bring a game with this much variety and depth to life. We love to introduce new members to the playtesting team, so please join our community Discord and follow along on social media. The bigger the community, the more fun Gem Blenders will be!
We are thankful and proud that Gem Blenders got funded so quickly! We have organized some stretch goals to keep momentum going as we continue to gather support for the game. All stretch goals will be included with the Starter Set, so every LV. 1 backer and above will receive these rewards as well.
Stretch Goal #1 Our first stretch goal is to include alternate artwork for Corruptor, Rocket, and Sprout. These artworks are pulled from a 9-card mini game called gem_blenders.zip. Here is the rulebook if you are interested in learning how to play. While the cards will have the same stats as their counterparts in the base set, we hope that including alternate artwork will add to the collectibility of the game. The other 4 alternate art cards will be unlocked in our next stretch goal!
Welcome to the low-fi internet world of Gemlandia - a land whose culture revolves around gems that contain different types of stored energy. Across Gemlandia, gems are mined and collected for a variety of purposes. Every gem type has its own characteristics and history.
Every state in Gemlandia has its own traditions and particular affinities for certain gem types. For example, Fashion City is an urban metropolis that is built on vast Electrogem mines, while Nocturna Point has a desolate landscape and small communities dedicated to mining and worshipping Nocturnagems.
While all inhabitants of Gemlandia use gems in their daily lives, some gifted individuals can combine the energies of multiple gems to use powerful transformations called blends - these are Gem Blenders. Gem blending is revered and an integral part of the culture and economy of the states that make up Gemlandia.
In Gem Blenders, 2-4 players each build a customized deck of cards and face off against each other. If you are familiar with trading card games or strategy games, the rules will come naturally. If you have little experience in this genre, not to worry! The rules are quick to pick up and you’ll be a Gem Blending master in no time.
There are 200 unique cards in the base set of Gem Blenders, consisting of 100 blends, 50 heroes, 41 actions, and 9 gems. Check out the full card list to learn about card effects and potential strategies. We have also included a free print-and-play of 2 pre-constructed starter decks, so you can get a feel for the game right away!
Heroes are the foundation for gameplay. Every deck must have exactly 4 unique hero cards, which remain on the field for the duration of the game in 4 distinct positions: left, center, right, and back. Over the course of each game, you attack with your heroes, switch their positions, and transform them into blends.
Gems are a source of energy for heroes to use blends and activate effects. Over the course of each game, you will equip heroes with different combinations of gems, which allows them to transform into a variety of powerful blends.
Blends are powerful transformations that require a specific combination of gems. A blend's level is equal to the number of gems it requires. Every blend requires a combination of 2-5 different gems. When you blend a hero, the attack, defense, and effect of the blend replace that of the hero.
Actions are added effects played to advance strategy. Generally, actions can only be played during your turn unless stated otherwise. Actions also have a star value that ranges from 0-3 stars, which indicates how powerful the card is. Any deck can have a maximum of 6 total stars of action cards.
Deck Building is an essential aspect of Gem Blenders. With 200 cards, there are nearly endless possibilities for card pairings and deck creation. Make sure to follow these guidelines when constructing your own deck:
- 4 unique hero cards
- Deck of 50 cards consisting of Gems, Blends, and Actions
- No more than 3 of any Blend or Action
- No more than 6 total stars of Actions
The Gem Blenders base set is split into 2 parts: the Starter Set and the Collector Set. Together, the sets provide every card in the game, and players can incrementally build how competitive their experience is. Having multiple copies of the Collector Set will provide you with multiple copies of powerful blends and action cards. Building decks with multiple copies of certain cards can prove beneficial when playing competitively because you'll draw them more often.
Fashion City is not only the largest city in Gemlandia, but it's also an exclusive club dedicated to producing stylish apparel. As a LV. 5 backer, you'll not only get a Fashion City T-shirt, but also a 1 year membership to Fashion City Club. As a member, you will receive some additional apparel in the coming months as well as access and input to custom designs.
While not included in the lower level backer tiers, the Fashion City T-Shirt (pictured above) will be available as an add-on. These shirts feature the Gem Blenders logo on the chest, 9 gems going down the right sleeve, and "Gem Blenders" going down the left sleeve. Simply add $40 to any pledge level to get your shirt! Additional shipping may apply.
As a LV. 5 backer, Steve will design a custom hero after you to be added to the world of Gemlandia. If you are interested in being immortalized in Gem Blenders, please consider becoming a LV. 5 backer - the support means A LOT.
As a LV. 5 Master backer, your custom hero will be added to the hero roster of the Starter Set, and every LV. 1 backer and above will get your card to play with. As a regular LV. 5 backer, Steve will work with you to design your hero card as he continues to work on expansion sets.
Leading up to this campaign, we sent out some prototype copies of Gem Blenders. See what these awesome content creators had to say and check out their other podcasts and videos too.
Thank you TCG Scrubs and TCG Buzz for featuring Gem Blenders and making awesome content! Without support from the greater card gaming community, it would be very difficult to make Gem Blenders a reality. Check out these guys - their dedication and enthusiasm is awesome!
Shipping will be charged after the Kickstarter campaign ends. A survey will be sent to you through a pledge manager, asking for your shipping address. Once your address has been entered, the pledge manager will calculate your shipping and request the appropriate payment. Below are estimates of the cost of shipping based on country.
We plan to ship Gem Blenders ourselves. Unfortunately, international shipping becomes expensive very quickly and we apologize that the steep shipping cost may deter some potential backers from around the world. However, please don't let this stop you from joining the Gem Blenders community. Please join our Discord to learn about online gametesting, and feel free to print out proxies from the full card list and build your own decks that way!
Thank you so much for checking out Gem Blenders - we've put a lot of time and heart into creating this project and we hope it shows! If you have any questions throughout the campaign, we'll be your points of contact.
Making Gem Blenders has been and will continue to be a community effort. A special thanks to some members of the community who have gone above and beyond!

Risks and challenges
Gem Blenders is the first game we've developed, and bringing it to Kickstarter has been a huge learning experience. We've loved every step of the process, but there have been some bumps along the way for sure.
As we mentioned above, Gem Blenders is a community-based project that has only come to life through the dedication and enthusiasm of our team of playtesters. As we look to expand the community, we recognize that it will require more time and energy to manage a growing player base. We assure you that we are excited and ready for the challenge.
We know there will be more challenges that arise as we move on to fulfillment, and we hope to mitigate them by working with great partners like PrintNinja and BackerKit to produce and deliver your game.
We will do our best to keep you updated with any unforeseen situations that arise that will affect the product or the delivery goal.
