About this project
And now the day fans and Rock historians thought they'd never see has come...The Rascals will reunite for their first public performances in over 40 years with all four original members! And you can be a part of it!
THE RASCALS: ONCE UPON A DREAM
The Rascals' original lineup—Felix Cavaliere, Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati and Dino Danelli—will reunite for their first public performances in over 40 years with "Once Upon A Dream," a combination concert/theatrical event produced and directed by Steven Van Zandt and lighting/projection wizard Marc Brickman. It's a Rock N Soul dance party meets The Jersey Boys.
In addition to the concert experience, the history of The Rascals, and the history of the ‘60’s through their music, will be dramaticized by a combination of narration, filmed scenes of actors acting out key moments in the band's history, news footage, and archival footage of the band.
There will elements of the staging and light design never seen before just as Marc Brickman has done in his previous groundbreaking work with Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Blue Man Group, the Olympics, and Roger Waters' recent 'The Wall' tour..
More than just a comeback or reunion concert, the show will remind the audience how uniquely inspirational, entertaining, and historically important the Rascals' music is.
It will debut at the The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, December 13th, 14th, and 15th. The theater is uniquely qualified for this debut, owner Peter Shapiro (Brooklyn Bowl, Wetlands, U2 3D) having restored it to it’s 1926 magnificence while equipping it with a state of the art lighting, projection, and sound system.
"To do justice to the Rascals importance, I've written a show for them
that is just as unique as they are. It’s called "Once Upon a Dream".
It's a combination of a Rock Concert and a Broadway show that will
include their own live performance by the original four Rascals - Felix,
Eddie, Dino, Gene, and be complimented by filmed segments and news
footage and will be a show that they can take all over the country....
The show will be an uplifting inspiration for you fans that have
been waiting all these years, praying for a Rascals comeback, and
those of you who are younger will get a real taste of the '60's you
missed the first time around. Me and Marc have invested our time, money, and blood these last few years for this idea and now we need you to bring it home. Not one dollar that is contributed will go into anyone's pocket, or be commissioned in any way, every dollar will go into the production making it as good as it can be, as great as the Rascals deserve....So that's it. The Rascals are coming back. We have been looking for other investors but nobody has any vision anymore. Frankly nobody believes in this dream except me, Marc, Peter and you. The production will be as big as you make it. On behalf of the Rascals Thank you." - Steven Van Zandt
The Rascals, formerly known as The Young Rascals, are one of the most influential, and artistically important American bands in Rock and Roll history. In a time dominated by the English rock acts of the British Invasion, The Rascals not only survived but thrived.
The post-twist New York and Long Island club scenes bred the band, an outfit whose sound grew more sophisticated as time went on but stayed rooted in the blue-eyed soul that was its first reason for being. At first a hard-hitting band reminiscent of the early Animals, the Rascals drew from the same well that fed the then-burgeoning garage rock scene.
Felix Cavaliere, Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Dino Danelli would go on to lead the way for Blue Eyed Soul to Folk Rock to Protest to Civil Rights, blending white Pop melodies with black soul and R&B muscle. Though they never brandished their politics like some bands, the Rascals truly lived theirs, fighting discrimination by demanding that a black act appear on the bill at each of its concerts.
Their music would span the entire decade from the early Go-Go dance parties right through the psychedelic era - and beyond.
The band released numerous top ten singles in the mid- and late-1960s, including “How Can I Be Sure”, “Come On Up”, "You Better Run", "I've Been Lonely Too Long", “Beautiful Morning”, and the #1 hits "Good Lovin'", "Groovin'", and "People Got to Be Free".
They went their separate ways in the early 70's, finally reuniting for one night in May of 1997 when Steven Van Zandt inducted them into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In 2010 for only the second time in 40 years, The Rascals once again reunited for one night and took to the stage at Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Grill, where they played a tribute show to benefit the Kristen Ann Carr Fund’s “A Night to Remember”. One of the highlights of the evening for guests such as Bill Murray, Garland Jeffreys, Lorne Michaels, and Whoopi Goldberg, was when Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt joined The Rascals for the encore performance of “Good Lovin.”
Risks and challenges
We don't foresee any issues, but recordings take dozens of hours of work for commercial quality sound. We have built many hours and days of buffer time into the estimated dates. However, there could always be something that requires another engineer, a different producer, a different video editor, etc. There is always potential for delays. Yet, we’ll do our best to deliver everything within the promised time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
