Take Off With Starflyer John Jackson And His Crew!
Starflyer John is a special pilot because he is only a boy. Although he is the youngest pilot, he is the best in the outer planets.
Ever since my wife and I had our first child I have wanted to write a children's book. Now that our first has started kindergarten -- and our second is two and a half! -- I figured I had put it off for long enough.
But what to write? A board book? Something more advanced? A full novel?
Well, what is missing? We have books about pirates and cats in hats and critters and trains and... what about sci-fi? Where are all the children's books with roots in science fiction?
There aren't a lot of them out there.
So what's a dad, who likes sci-fi and wants to write a children's book, to do?
He sits down and writes, Starflyer John Jackson.
It's a story about a boy pilot who, together with his best friend, Winfield, Ack the robot and Lizzie, a pet lizzog (half lizard/half dog), helps shuttle cargo throughout the outer planets while outsmarting the Zeeps and having fun in their ship, The Rough-01.
My son, Jack, is the inspiration for all the characters and the story itself. The main character, Starflyer John Jackson, is based on my son. The story is set in space "just outside the rings of Saturn" because he likes space (and the rings of Saturn). The robot is named Ack because, growing up, my son never said the "J" when he spelled his name. Winfield is named after his stuffed Winnie the Pooh doll that he sleeps with every night. Starflyer John's ship is named The Rough-01 because, when he was little, my son used to run around saying, "Rough oh shay, rough oh one!" - My wife and I still have no idea what that means.
The text of the book is written and I am currently working with a friend of mine from high school who just so happens to be an illustrator/editor/videographer/and all around great person. As you can see from the sketches above she is super talented and has really helped me, not only in bringing my characters to life, but guiding me through this process. Check out some of her work at Red Admiral Creative Studio.
I would also like to give thanks to another friend of mine from high school who did the custom music behind the Kickstarter video. Please check out his site for customized songs for any occasion at Write Me My Song.
I am extremely excited about this book. There is a lot of support from my family and friends, which is really giving me the drive to make this dream a reality.
I can't do it without your help.
The money I am raising with this Kickstarter will go to pay for the illustrations and to self publish the book.
- Payment for the illustrations/editing and overall assembling of the book itself
- Self publishing through a Print on Demand service
- Payment for, and delivery of, the rewards
- Other incidentals
- Fees and charges
I hope you will help me make this book a reality and launch Starflyer John Jackson into orbit!
Risks and challenges
This is my first attempt at writing a book, but I have some knowledgeable folks helping me out, and I have the power of Google at my fingertips.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
