LOST / FOUND - Our "Never" released 1980 MOSE JONES Album!
Hi everyone! We are Steve McRay and Marvin Taylor, former members of the 70's/80's Southern Rock band MOSE JONES. After much thought, we decided to use Kickstarter to humbly ask YOU to join our campaign and help us launch our dream project, entitled "Lost / Found"! Missing music for 30 years returns home! Watch the video and keep reading to learn more!
First A Little History
In the era when Southern Rock bands were exploding on the music scene, Atlanta band MOSE JONES was integral and bedrock in the 70's musical landscape, with radio air-play and heavy touring schedules. Their first 2 albums were on MCA records with Al Kooper as Producer and Manager of the band - Al's "Sounds of South" label; Lynyrd Skynyrd were our label mates. Sadly, the band broke up, but reformed a year or so later and signed a 2 album contract with RCA, with Buddy Buie producing and managing.
Mose Jones performed and toured the US with many major artists of that time: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Frank Zappa, Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker Band, Little Feat, Boz Skaggs, Doobie Brothers, Charlie Daniels, Freddie King, Molly Hatchet, Sea Leavell, Mothers Finest, Dixie Dregs, Rick Derringer, John Mayall. The concerts, clubs, and festivals list is far too long to list here.
Mose Jones recorded 4 albums, but, well...the last album was never released by RCA records; it was canned! At the time when we recorded this album, we were feeling on top of the world! We had great songs, powerful energy, and thanks to Buddy Buie as producer and Tad Bush as our engineer, the sounds coming out of Studio One were just amazing! We were playing these songs "live" and getting strong audience reactions, so the news from RCA was surprising as well as disheartening. In 1980, with the members of Mose Jones feeling disenchanted and beat from the constant travel and life on the road, the band decided to call it quits...leaving the last album project (now titled "Lost / Found") un-released and sitting in the dark dusty studio vaults.
NOTE* After the break up of Mose Jones, members of the band went on tour, record, produce, and continue as performers, songwriters, and composers. Some of the artists we've toured or recorded with include: 38 Special, Ted Nugent, Alicia Bridges, Francine Reed, Ben E King, Joan Baez, Randall Bramblett, as well as Ichiban Records Blues artists. Some of our composing credits include music for GA Civil War Documentary (Taylor), Delta Airlines (McRay), and writing songs for Francine Reed (Taylor). We have also backed artists on stage for high profile events, i.e., John Michael Montgomery, Montgomery Gentry, John Berry, Steve Cropper, Paul Williams, Davey Jones, Paul Barrere and Kenny Gradney (of Little Feat), Susan Anton, Lou Gramm, Wally Palmar, Robin Zander, Ed Roland, Jack Blades, and Jeff Carlisi. We enjoyed playing music together, and you might remember us in some of these bands: Out a Hand Band, Java Monkey, David Wingo Charity band, Francine Reed band, Lucky Pierre, the Lucky Ones, and the Randall Bramblett band.
LOST / FOUND - and a Good Story Begins!
Steve tells his story: The moment Fate and Purpose walked into my life was towards the end of 2012...long time friend and Mose Jones alumni Bryan Cole passed, and went on to join Randy Lewis and Jimmy O'Neill onstage in the next life. While the feelings of losing my good friend were fresh, the master recordings of the 4th Mose Jones album, which had recently found their way into my hands, came forward to finally be released...these were the final and last recordings of Mose Jones! And with them, the fruition and legacy of our Southern Rock band Mose Jones.
I instinctively knew that this privilege had fallen on me and I called on Mose Jones alumni Marvin Taylor. It is our honor to dedicate the "Lost / Found" project in memory of Randy Lewis, Jimmy O'Neill, and Bryan Cole (friends and original members of Mose Jones) and Tad Bush (friend, engineer extraordinaire and co-producer on the Blackbird LP plus "Lost /Found"), and Chuck Fowler (our friend and stage tech).
It is now our pleasure to offer these once lost and now found recordings of the 4 men who were known as "Mose Jones" 1977 to 1980...and help us fulfill the undeniable Mose Jones legacy while solidifying our place in the history of Southern Rock bands.
I know that we had many devoted friends and fans that bought and listened to our first RCA album BLACKBIRD - and we still have many friends and fans that would love to hear these final Mose Jones recordings, especially since many heard us play these songs live before we broke up in 1980.
The "Lost / Found" album will take you back to a time when Mose Jones was serving up their signature brand of Southern Rock, and adding their own spicy flavors and funk to the organic rock songs of the day - a CD to share with friends who never heard of us before...you know, and maybe make some new friends and turn on some new listeners along the way.
This is when we finally made our decision to use KICKSTARTER for our funding! (this video explains)
What Is on this final Mose Jones recording?
Mose Jones features Marvin Taylor (Guitar), Randy Lewis (RIP) (Vocals/Bass), Steve McRay (Vocals/Keyboards), and Chris Seymour (Drums). The album was produced by Buddy Buie, engineered and co-produced by Tad Bush (RIP) and Mose Jones. All songs written by Buddy Buie, Randy Lewis, and Steve McRay as well as Marvin Taylor and Chris Seymour. The album was recorded in analog at famed Studio One in Doraville, GA, where Atlanta Rhythm Section, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Journey, Joe South, Alicia Bridges, Stillwater, Crusados, and many more artists recorded; except for the Muscle Shoals Horns, which were recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound, Muscle Shoals, AL.
Eight songs plus one or two bonus tracks
- Darlin' Come Back
- Slip Away
- Dead End Street
- I'd Rather Live On The Moon
- Working Girl
- Coming Back For More
- Instrumental Interlude
Plus, we have 8 bonus songs, all recorded in the same time period and for this project. Some of these bonus songs are original and some are cover songs. We will have these bonus tracks mixed and mastered, and have them available in our REWARDS incentives area.
The songs reflect that 70's/80's time - infectious bass and drums grooves with rock, disco, funk, and r & b style - fantastic guitar solos, keyboards with Fender Rhodes and Hammond B3, and topping off with soul inspired vocals and harmony laden choruses. Another bonus; we had the Muscle Shoals Horns add their awesome horns on a few of the tracks - plus, we called in our friend Randall Bramblett to play soprano sax on one of our songs, "Darlin' Come Back"!
Rock history is filled with stories of recording executive's blunders. No one knows what would have happened had fate taken a different turn...RCA choose not to release Mose Jones' final album, aka "Lost / Found". To their ears, there wasn't a top 40 "single" on the album. In 1981, the Atlanta Rhythm Section proved the recording executives wrong when they recorded our song "Alien" (with our enthusiastic blessing) for their Quinella album (Columbia). Alien was released as a 45 single and made it's way to a top-40 hit, climbing to #29 on the Top-40 Billboard charts and sending the song to #16 in Adult Contemporary Billboard charts http://www.billboard.com/artist/280161/atlanta-rhythm-section/chart
We've always been very grateful to the Atlanta Rhythm Section for coming to us and taking our song to the top 40. Now, we'd like for you to hear it the way we played it!
Where Are We Now in This Project?
At the present, the 2" tapes have all been baked (procedure that has to take place with old tapes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sticky-shed_syndrome ) and all of the songs have successfully been transferred from analog to digital format - now each song is in the process of being mixed, and our studio engineer is doing a great job of preserving the pristine sounds of the 24 track analog and that 70's/80's attitude...just as they were intended to be.
We are so impressed by how great these recordings sound - the analog fidelity is just amazing!! Our engineer on the transfer project had goose bumps when he first heard the raw tracks - he said he hadn't been this impressed with sounds being this good in all of his years of studio work...that's saying something. We know everyone's going love the quality of these sounds!
Next, all of the songs will be mixed, mastered, and prepared for pressing and replication - releasing the project as the "Lost / Found" physical CD as well as the digital download of the "Lost / Found" CD. We will offer digital downloads of all of the bonus tracks from the project, and randomly include them in our rewards section as well. The CD will be released on the "BIG COFFEE RECORDS" label.
Rewards start at $5 then graduate up from there. All backers will receive a signed "Thank You" POSTCARD from us! We have some pretty cool rewards listed for you pledges:

How Will We Use Your Money?
NOTE: Now that we've passed our minimum goal, the extra funds will go to make this project and the music even better, and to pay back expenses!
We need to raise at least $5000 for all of the expenses involved with releasing this music and giving the project the quality it deserves - from start to finish and have some left over for marketing and promotion. This is what we'll be paying for:
- The studio time: the costs of transferring analog tape to digital - media storage - mixing and mastering the album - as well as post production and getting the album ready for pressing.
- To manufacture the physical album - CD replication, pressing, and postage
- The CD artwork - graphic design and photography
- CD and Song Copyrights - Mechanical licenses - physical and digital
- CD project promotion, marketing, distribution - plus web design
- Paying for Fees associated with Kickstarter, Amazon, and rewards funding - materials, postage, and miscellaneous cost
Risks and challenges
There is minimal risk to you that this project will not be released, VERY MINIMAL! All of the inspired recording has already taken place and all tapes have successfully been transferred - unforeseen circumstances with studio scheduling, art work and pressing the CD may delay us only slightly. The project WILL be released on the BIG COFFEE RECORD label, which is experienced at releasing CD projects - the funding will make sure we finish and release this project in a timely manor, with the quality, speed, and success that this music deserves.
We have now raised more than our $5000 GOAL!!! The extra funds will now go toward 1) Making this project and this music even BETTER! 2) pay back expenses for this campaign 3) extra promotion and marketing expenses...we have many friends and fans all over the world and funding will help us market this project to everyone who wants a "LOST / FOUND" CD!
We are asking for your HELP and appreciate your support so much!! We are humbled by your wanting to see our Mose Jones project "LOST / FOUND" be a success. We really are grateful to each and everyone of you!
Please, share this project with your friends (Facebook, Twitter, email, phone calls, snail mail, carrier pigeons, on horseback, pack mules in the mountains, camels in the desert...ok, got carried away). But yes, we need all the support we can get!! Thank You!
