“Gertie and Rex get a wild hair and move to the remote highland jewel of Oaxaca, Mexico in pursuit of adventure. There they find Eduardo, a crafty 2000-year old Zapotec vampire, El Rey Pelón (the skinny, pot-bellied fungus who drives a taxi), and of course Death, who plays a mean harmonica.”
Death Plays a Mean Harmonica is a 130-page graphic novel set in Oaxaca, Mexico, where I lived 2007-2017.
This first limited edition of the book features a screen-print cover (signed & numbered). This project is a culmination of my moxie as a cartoonist. I combine slippery optimism with a deep suspicion that time does not exist. A view of life, death and everything in between is encoded in brush strokes executed in magic black ink.
I'll present the book at indy comics shows, punk/alt performance spaces and galleries, and college/university settings in person. I'll bring my guitar and howl at the moon with my Oaxacabilly tunes. We're gonna have a real good time while sparking grass-roots interest in comics as art.
Project rewards include the book itself, as well as original sketches, comic art and paintings.
I ask for your support in my mission to produce this unusually beautiful artifact!
Risks and challenges
Upon successful completion of this Kickstarter project, the book will be printed, signed by Steve & shipped to supporters. Projected turnaround 6-8 weeks.
My idea is to fund a run of at least 100 books. If I generate orders for, say, 1,672 books, I'll produce enough to fill the orders. The ISBN for this first limited edition is 978-0-9769690-7-5.
All original art rewards will be produced and shipped out within a four week period. Original art shipped insured.
T-Shirts will be mailed within four weeks.
Steve has a track record of three successful Kickstarters. I've published around 60 comics books and ten graphic novels.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
