1:25pm ET update: With about 4 hours left - and thanks to new backers - we've unlocked our final stretch goal of a bonus fourth pin! -- Steve
Hi. This Kickstarter campaign is to create a set of Limited-Edition Enamel Pins based on characters from my webcomic, The Middle Age (middleagecomic.com).
The Middle Age is a fantasy webcomic which I write and draw about a slightly older knight who lost his love, his sword and his job, and is on a quest to win them all back. Our hero, Sir Quimp, is 'aided' in his quest by a talking, cursed sword, Maledicta, which hates him. You can read the story for free here.
About The Middle Age
The Middle Age launched in 2016 and has been lucky enough to receive 'Best Webcomic' nominations in both the San Diego Comic-Con Eisner Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con Ringo Awards. Here are some of the nice things people have said about The Middle Age:
“I love The Middle Age. Genuinely funny, and wonderfully illustrated. ...it’s all super smart and fun.” - Joshua Dysart
“The strip is superb, combining clear, charming cartooning and funny writing with lovingly rendered details and excellent lettering in a way that I haven’t seen since Walt Kelly’s ‘Pogo.’ I love it dearly.” - Todd Klein
“Beautifully drawn and hilarious.” - Tom Racine, Tall Tale Radio
"...this is a fun comic." - Fleen
This limited edition pin set is my first bit of "merch" for The Middle Age and I was inspired by Kickstarter's Make/100 event. I'm a big fan of enamel pins and, living in Florida, I've seen plenty of beautiful pins from the big theme parks.
As a Make/100 campaign, I've kept the rewards pretty simple. Update: On January 25, I added the just the books for $20!
About the pins
Each pin will be about 1.25-inches wide - which seemed like a good size - not small and not so large as to be unwieldy or heavy. The height of each pin will be different as the characters heads pop out of the top on two of them.
Each pin will have a rubber clasp for secure fastening and each pin will come poly-bagged.
These pins are limited to 100 and the designs will never be reprinted. In this campaign, only 99 are available as I'm keeping one set for myself. :)
This is Series 1 and if this campaign succeeds, count on more pin series in the future!
The $2,500-stretch-goal fourth pin will be added at no extra cost to backers (of the $30 and $45 levels) and I'll let backers vote which character from The Middle Age we'll add. The choices would include: the sword-wielding undead Kevin, the gender-swapped Sir Quimp, the baby dragon Jarn, or Bob the not-very-helpful furry thing.
(This section added January 18) I know I wanted to keep the rewards simple, but a number of backers have asked for the option to add rewards to their pledges.
You can add additional items to your pledge level by simply choosing the item(s) you would like and then following the instructions below to add to your pledge!
To add an add-on to your pledge, follow these steps:
- 1) Press the 'Manage Your Pledge' Button above. If you have not pledged yet, it will say 'Back this Project'.
- 2) Increase your pledge in the 'Pledge Amount' box by the total of the add-ons you want to add.
- 3) After the end of the Kickstarter campaign you will receive a survey that will ask you questions so that you can explain how you would like the add-on money assigned.
- 4) If you're adding an extra pin set or sets to your pledge, please message me when you can. Your note will help me keep track of the number of remaining sets available. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to take a look at this Kickstarter and I hope you consider supporting it.
And happy 2018!
Risks and challenges
This is my first time manufacturing pins and thanks to some fellow webcartoonists, I've found a very good pin maker. I've received a fair quote and I'm pleased with the other work they've done. I'll be sharing updates as I work with them to create the final pins.
I've run a successful Kickstarter before and learned from a few mistakes (like don't add a giant poster as a stretch goal reward for a small pack of postcards :) ). I'm confident that if we reach our goal, I can deliver the rewards on schedule without too much fuss or drama. :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
