About this project
Thanks everyone for your support. Because of you the project has reached its target so it is definitely going to happen. I can't wait to send you the finished product this summer.
To celebrate we want to add a couple of reach goals
£9999—Backers from reward tiers 5 and 6 will receive larger 11x8" prints (instead of 9x6")
£14999— All reward backers will receive a A2 poster featuring all 99 ice creams
Please help us spread the word!
99 x 99s is a photographic project which documents the story of the 99 ice cream through a photographic road trip around the UK.
In the summer of 2013, over 25 days and 3,500 miles, I travelled around the coastline of Great Britain. As I went from place to place I was fascinated by the human touches that make each 99 ice cream unique. I also documented the seaside ice cream vans and parlors that sold the 99s, and the discussed the myths which surround this very British icon.
I always hoped that project would become a photo book, and I am now in the late stages of the book design together with collaborators YES, who designed my first book An Incomplete Dictionary of Showbirds.
The plan is for the 99 x 99s book to be more ambitious in terms of size, page count, materials and finish. The book will be 285mm x 215mm (around A4 size) and will have a beautiful cloth bound cover with inset images on the front and reverse. The book will be wrapped in a clear acetate dust jacket with screenprinted typography. The interior of the book is printed on premium quality matte art paper. The main pages features the vendor and relating ice cream per spread, complete with the location, date and weather. The book contains an essay by the author and broadcaster Michael Smith.

“It wasn’t a journey to explore the 99, so much as a journey into the collective psyche and the land that had created it … as a rite of passage, American photographers do vast epic road trips down route 66. English photographers go to the seaside.”
— Michael Smith

Risks and challenges
I am working with YES Studio who are an award winning design company and have produced many art and photography books for major and independent publishers. YES also designed and co-published my first book "The Incomplete Dictionary of Show Birds" which is currently in its second edition. As we have been through this process before, we have invaluable experience in creating and delivering a product of premium quality. The only potential issue that we can foresee would be a slight delay in delivery due to a hold up in production or shipping, but we will keep all backers updated in this event.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
