Hey there, it's Stephen Taylor with www.StephensDrumShed.com
I'm beyond excited to announce that we are buying a free standing studio just south of Nashville, TN!
This is something myself and the team have been working toward for quite a while, and it is finally time to pull the trigger - but we want YOU, the SDS community, to be a part of this exciting next step.
For the entire existence of the You Tube channel, the website, and the Drum Better Daily program, I have worked out of studio rooms in my home. However, not having a stand-alone facility is beginning to severely hinder our ability to create content and grow the community. It's no longer just ME that makes the drum lessons and content happen, so the goal is to purchase a building that can house the team's offices and a studio. This will enable us to produce video content at greater scale (both in quality and quantity). We have plans to bring in some of the top players in the drumming world as guest artists (I've already begun contacting them), to host in person drum camp experiences, and so much more - but we need a stand-alone studio to do so.
We need your help! All of the funds from this campaign will go directly towards finishing the downpayment, buying equipment to outfit the new studio, and renovation of the new space once we are in it.
Where this all started...
I began this entire journey about 10 years ago. I took our family garage, walled it in, and made it a "studio". There was no heat, no air conditioning. In the winter I turned on the "professional video lighting" that I had bought from Lowe's hardware store (yes, they were work lights) to heat the room up and in the summer I took breaks in between takes to towel off the sweat. At one point I even installed a window A/C unit in the studio door!
The next studio...
The next "studio" was an 11x11 room just off of the den in our second home. I took off the closet door to have room for the lights and for months we had a 16 channel snake running across our den floor to the audio computer. Below is a walk through of that studio.
Fast forward to the current studio space...a 10x11 room off of our garage. You walk out of the studio and you literally almost run into the lawn mower. There is room enough for a drum set and a standing desk for me. I haven't sat down to answer emails in years. That's not a complaint, just a fact. There's just not room in here for a desk on the floor. The lighting rig is made out of PVC pipe. The "audio control booth" is a closet in the downstairs hallway. A 16 channel snake runs from the garage into the house. Storage for gear is spread out in the garage and a room downstairs.
As you can tell from the pictures below, this is absolutely not a place we can bring guest artists. We have booked our first guest artists...we just need a better space. The plans we have are not in the future...they're now. We are just needing to move quickly to accommodate the growth of the Drum Better Daily program and the community in general.
The next steps...
So when is this all happening and what has to happen before it CAN happen?
The plan is to secure and purchase a space by the end of this summer. Obviously we will look until the perfect space comes on the market. I would love to have our first in person camp experience by November of this year.
The funds from this campaign will go entirely towards completing the down payment for the facility, renovation costs (acoustical treatment, etc.), lights, audio equipment, cameras, and other upgraded gear that will be needed. We have plans on utilizing as much of our current equipment as we can. This isn't a grab for "new stuff". I've boot strapped this entire business and plan on continuing to be frugal and wise with all decisions involved so that this community will always have a place to gather, whether that be online or in person.
Once we are in the space, we will be working as quickly as possible to get it up and functioning. We are actively looking at spaces, I have spoken with multiple consultants on gear and equipment costs, and I have an acoustician that will be helping us make the space into an official studio that this community can point to and be proud of.
The plan and why you are going to love it...
- Free standing studio space allows for more guest artists
- More content, both for free and for the Drum Better Daily program
- Better content both in quality and quantity
- In person drum camp experiences
- Online and in person clinic events

The Art of Practice Course
TAOP is my most popular course to date. It helps you increase focus and get more done in your practice time. Know what to work on, how to work on it, and when to move on.
For years musicians have been fed the story that “practice makes perfect”. The remedy for any problem has been to practice more, put in more hours, really grind it out!
But what if I told you that all of that was wrong!
The concepts in The Art of Practice have been tested and proven by thousands of satisfied students. It is the only course of its kind for musicians. It’s all about planning and developing your goals to create a practice ritual that will allow you to see the results you’ve always wanted to see.
This course is 5 modules long, has roughly 20 hours of teaching, and comes with video, audio, and written transcript downloads of every lesson. Yours to keep for life. It teaches you how to construct a practice time that is focused and driven towards productivity.
It will help you…
- See that you don’t need 25 hours a day, 8 days a week to see progress.
- Learn the proper way to schedule, goal set, keep a practice journal, & eliminate practice killers.
- Use creative triggers to increase focus
- Learn what a warm up should look like & why we use them (it’s not what you think!)
- Learn how to utilize feedback loops, creative assembly lines, zoning, & so much more
- Find your own voice & learn to love your playing

SDS In Person Camp Reservation
As I've mentioned, one of the goals before the end of this year is to have our first in person SDS camp experience. You will have first choice for attending one future drum camp. Times TBD in the future. There is no expiration date, so you can redeem them when a camp comes up that you are able to attend.
The drum camp intensives will be 4-5 days long. During that time the SDS staff and I will be working side by side with you on your drumming. Daily masterclasses, private sessions, practice time, group sessions, group jam sessions, guest artists, and a ton more. All in a state of the art studio. At night you will be free to hang out with the other campers at the nearby hotel or go into Nashville to enjoy the night life. This camp reservation DOES include: facility and instructor/guest artist fees, transportation to and from the airport, and transportation from the hotel to the studio every day. This fee DOES NOT include your travel costs (airfare or other travel to the Nashville area), hotel costs, and food. You will also have your name included on the plaque to be hung in the new studio + t-shirt + Boot Camp Download Pack + an invitation to a private live stream party to celebrate. (LIMIT of 10 backers)
Stephen Lesson Intensive Experience
An in person with Stephen in your own city. Stephen will fly to your city (USA and Canada only) and will either: have an all day private drum lesson hang with you (8 hours of drumming and lessons). At the end of the day, Stephen will take you out for dinner and a hang.
Stephen will have a half day private drum lesson (3-4 hours) hang with you and then put on a drum clinic in the evening. NOTE: For the clinic you must arrange a place for the clinic to happen. Location must be the equivalent of a music store, studio, concert hall, or school with drums provided. This pledge amount includes Stephen's airfare, hotel, lesson/clinic fees, and food costs. You will also have your name included on the plaque to be hung in the new studio + 2 year long DBD access passes + t-shirt + Boot Camp Download Pack + an invitation to a private live stream party to celebrate. You will also have your name included on the plaque to be hung in the new studio so we can thank you and tell all of our guest artists and visitors about you. Times to be determined by you and the SDS team. (LIMIT of 2 backers)
The Nashville Pro Recording Experience
You will fly to Nashville for the professional studio experience of a lifetime!
After a comfortable night in your hotel room resting from your flight, you will spend a full day at a professional Nashville studio recording with experienced Nashville session and touring musicians (guitar, bass, and keys. Who we are able to book will depend on touring and recording session schedules at the time. You can rest assured they will be comprised of seasoned touring players and first call session players...all with killer resumes. We have incredible contacts here in Nashville).
This includes all studio fees, engineer fees, musician fees, hotel, your travel, track mixing, video editing, and food costs. We will provide the drums and cymbals for the session. We will give you several options of studio spaces and engineers so that you have the session of your dreams.
You may provide an original track that you would like to have recorded, a cover song you want to record, or we will provide 1 pre-written original track for you to record to and make your own. The musicians and engineers will be at your disposal for the entire session and it will be run like any other pro Nashville recording session is run.
In addition, we will be filming throughout the day and taking pictures so that you have PLENTY of ways to remember your session and share the experience with your friends and family on social media. We will send you your mixed track, an edited compilation video of the day, edited pictures of the session, and all of the raw files (pics, video, stems, charts, etc.) for you to keep forever and share however you like.
At the end of the day, the SDS team will take you out for a celebratory dinner at a local hot spot, give you a surprise drum gift (you will love it), and then spend the night exploring downtown Nashville, listening to music, and hanging with you. The next day we'll put your butt back on a plain and fly you back home with a lifetime's worth of memories to share with friends and family.
Also includes 2 year long Drum Better Daily passes, t-shirt, name on plaque, Boot Camp Download Pack, & an invite to the private livestream celebration party. (Limit of 1 Backer)
Risks and challenges
We obviously want to move on this facility as quickly as possible. That being said, there is no way for us to predict the housing market and what will be available in the coming months. Over the past 6 months we have already seen multiple buildings that would have been perfect for the studio space once a little renovation and remodeling happened. We just haven't been ready to move on them. We have an agent who is actively looking, we are pre-approved, and we are ready to move quickly once the right space comes available.
While we want to make this happen by the end of the summer (our current work space, team meetings, data backup and management, etc. are a complete pain at the moment), there is no guarantee that it will. Just rest assured it is our #1 priority at the moment. Until we find the space and are able to renovate it, we will continue producing quality content at the same pace we always have. We have also ensured that there will be little to no downtime during the renovation and moving phase. It should be a smooth transition.
As long as we are able to fund this project, you can be sure that this will happen as soon as humanly possible. We will update everyone often on the project progress.
Thank you SO MUCH for being a part of this journey. We are honored to share and engage in a community as awesome as this one.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
