**Update: 10% of project funds will be donated to New Music USA. Click on "Updates" above for reason and link**
If you’re not aware by now, I have begun a seven year project to compose 150 pieces, and I'd like to dedicate my next composition to YOU!
A lot of music is written for a specific performer, or commissioned, but sometimes composers dedicate their music to important people: Think of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, originally dedicated to Napolean.
My last composition (you can hear it above) was dedicated those who helped me appreciate low brass instruments, specifically the horn, trombone and tuba, but for this next piece for solo piano I would like to dedicate it to someone very special...
You are a significant and loyal supporter and as a way of saying 'thanks' I'd like to dedicate my next composition to you (or someone you designate: "In memory of" or "On behalf of" or "For" etc.).
Everyone supporting this KickStarter project will be a dedicatee, but please look through the rewards because you may like to be more involved in helping me create my next opus!
Thank you. And don’t delay...
You only have a few days left!
Why a Kickstarter campaign?
Writing a new piece of music is always an exciting adventure, and I'm so very pleased you are interested in the process - demonstrated by your reading this far.
Composing is a long process from initial topical research (including what the relevant inspiration/ source is all about) through decisions about structure, instrumentation, length, harmonic style, and mood. The next step is to start writing.
Thankfully, I have garnered sufficient knowledge and experience through studying a variety of scores as both conductor (performer) and composer (creator) that once the initial decisions are made, I am able to write music with deliberation and hearing the intended sounds "in my head." (Ever sing a song in your head? It's kind of like that.)
Using a computer program, I plug the actual notes into the software and lo, a somewhat relevant sound comes out of the speakers! Computer technology is tremendously advanced and useful for composers even though at this stage computer renditions of the notes I enter are still fundamentally limited and inflexible. Creating mp3 files from the computer score is simply a matter of a few clicks and a little editing in specialist audio software, and I can even copy those files onto CD for you.
The trick comes in having a real musician play and record the music live. There is so much more to "music" than just the music, and humans bring an essential element to performance that no computer will ever be able to capture or reproduce... at least not in our lifetimes!
Whilst this composition project is designed to help me improve my writing skills, actual performances are not yet guaranteed. So far, plenty of people have stepped forward and offered performance on the first two pieces, and I've no doubt this piece will be performed soon as well. However, if you want to guarantee a performance and/or a recording, then please consider one of the larger rewards and I will get practicing myself.
This Kickstarter campaign will enable me to utilize a regional performing arts center, a mobile classical music recording studio, and possibly even an outstanding university media department that focuses on filming performing arts programs. As a result, I can assure you this project will be one of the most fun and rewarding with a longevity you'll be able to indulge in for many years to come. You should feel proud to be a dedicatee, and to have played a part in the creation of this piece of music, it's score, and any recordings we make as a direct result of your support.
Risks and challenges
When this project is successfully funded I shall be able to complete all stated deliverables well within the established time frames. There may be a slight delay in delivery of the DVD, but you will still get it long before Christmas!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
