Cartoonist Stephanie McMillan is illustrating writer Derrick Jensen's first children's story. What have the bears done with Mrs. Johnson's yarn?
[EDITED 1/21: Thank you to all our wonderful backers!! We made our goal for printing costs with 10 days to spare. If any further pledges are made, we'll use them for either a higher print run, higher quality printing, or more promotion such as sending out more review copies.]
In this sweet story for children, old Mrs. Johnson lives happily alone in the forest. She loves to knit sweaters and mittens for her grandchildren in the city. One day her solitude comes to an end when her mischievous forest neighbors reveal themselves in a delightfully colorful fashion. Who took her yarn, and what have they done with it?
"Mischief in the Forest" will be 40 full-color pages. At the beginning of my collaboration with Kickstarter, I have five pages complete, plus the cover. My deadline for finishing all the illustrations is January 1 [edit: this has been changed to February 1]; then it goes to the printer.
The story is written by the amazing environmentalist activist and philosopher Derrick Jensen (check out derrickjensen.org -- I highly recommend all of his 15+ books, especially "Culture of Make-Believe" and "Endgame"). He lives in a forest much like this one!
I'm a cartoonist. My regular projects are a comic strip called "Minimum Security" which is distributed 5 days/week by United Features Syndicate (you can see it at minimumsecurity.net), as well as a weekly editorial cartoon about the environmental emergency called "Code Green" (stephaniemcmillan.org/codegreen), plus another weekly cartoon about social media for my hometown daily paper.
I've collaborated with Derrick before, when we created a graphic novel called "As the World Burns: 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Stay in Denial." "Mischief" is the first children's book for both of us. We hope you'll enjoy it!
The money raised here would be used for printing the book, and if we raise an amount higher than our goal, we'll use it either for a higher print run and/or promotional costs (like mailing out more review copies or buying advertising).
