This book will be a PDF of 100 pages or perfect bound for physical copies and will detail the six main regions of Leviathan, its races, peoples, nations, cultural orders, and creatures. It will also go into its history, mythlore, and major NPCs. It will finally detail where, on modern day Earth, the Gatekeeper portals open to this mythic land, and will introduce some of the denizens from Earth that have made Leviathan their home and vice versa. This book will be systemless and will suit most games systems so you can bring characters from your current game into Leviathan for adventure! A list of charts will be provided to help you scale your system's stats appropriately.

What we're using the Kickstarter funds for.

We'll use the funds to pay the creatives such as writers, art, and layout, purchase extra art, and pay for the print copies. Your book will come to you via One Book Shelf (DrivethruRPG, RPGNow, etc) and will be a voucher for the PDF or a Print-On-Demand copy and shipping. Any possible import duties are your responsibility so please check before pledging (most countries don't charge a duty of physical books but V.A.T. is now due on electronic books)

Distant Realms is a gazetteer for the continent of Leviathan on the world of Atuannu. Originally populated by Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, and Cats, the races of Leviathan discovered ancient Man on Earth via a network of portals.

A war between the embodiments of death (Tua) and life (Annu) brought annihilation to Earth leading to the Great Flood. They saved what humans they could but millennia later the Elves at least regret saving them. All that remains of the Leviathan races on Earth are half forgotten tales of dwarves, halflings, elves, and the fey.

The secret path into the Elven city of Talerion, Lo-Hemna.
The secret path into the Elven city of Talerion, Lo-Hemna.

Leviathan is a land of feudal kingdoms, tribal plains, forgotten temples, and lost cities. It is a land primarily of Men, but also of secretive Dwarves, a tyrannical Elven empire, wandering Cats, and ocassionally, a lost visitor from modern day Earth. Want to bring your U.S. Marine squad up against Orcs on the slopes of the White Mountains? Elven Archers hiding out on the streets of East London? You got it.

The town of Pahrastin, East Larasin, central Eomandir.
The town of Pahrastin, East Larasin, central Eomandir.

Each region, Eormandir, Aisulis, Paleador, Tellanur, Tarsantua, and Lo-Hemna (south Tellanur), has it's own section and the realms within that region are listed in catalogue fashion detailing who rules there, what currency and languages are used, and any other notes such as the names of major settlements.

The main race of Leviathan is Man in various shades and creeds. While Leviathan has its Elves and Dwarves, they are rarely encountered. The Elven realm of Lo-Hemna is xenophobic and tyrannical and the only Elves you'll find outside of that are the vagabond outcasts known as the Helliandarim. Dwarves and Halflings have all but died out in Leviathan leaving only a few scattered outposts, and Gnomes are even more scarce. Cats, Orcs, and Trolls are the only races alongside Men that seem to be thriving.

There is also the Mirim, a tall warrior race with the skin of sharks and a cold dead stare to match.

This section deals with all the unique and mundane creatures you're likely to meet with their usual area of habitation also illustrated. The Orcs and Troll chiefdoms are closely related and often ally themselves against Humans. There are a few scattered Dark Halfling settlements and then there's the Shadow. The Shadow are a race of dark humanoid shades intent on consuming the lives of all they meet. Half fast zombie, half black smoke entity, they are the stuff of nightmares for all decent Leviathans.

Dragons, Beastmen, Ogres, Giants, Ghouls, Werewolves, Vampires, Great Snakes, and other such beasts inhabit these pages to test your players. While their physical stats aren't represented, there is a sliding scale of difficulty for Gatekeepers to adequately gauge the threat to their player's characters.

Stephanie McAlea is a Welsh cartographer and has been involved in the RPG hobby as a gamer for 35 years and as a professional in the industry for 10. Her previous work includes commissions for Chaosium, Mongoose, Golden Goblin Press and many more with her maps in titles such as The Horror on the Orient Express, Call of Cthulhu 7th edition, 2300AD, The Legacy of Arrius Lurco, World War Cthulhu, and Cthulhu by Gaslight (many under her pre-transition name of Steffon Worthington). Being from North Wales she has rainwater for blood, slate for bones, and the heart of a dragon forged in the mountains of the north (yet is surprisingly approachable).

August Hahn is an American (mostly) writer of science fiction, fantasy and roleplaying materials. Having started tossing dice when fantasy gaming was still three books in a little white box, he has been roleplaying for three full decades and is both proud and profoundly depressed by that fact. Born in 1971, his military family moved around a great deal, affording him the chaos and blessing of life in dozens of different countries. This has provided him with a montage of an accent, hesitation at spelling words like valor/valour and a fondness for cities like Chicago, London and New York (more confused whirlpools of cultures do not exist on this or any other planet). His writing credits include two novels and dozens of gaming supplements in several different major product lines including Dungeons and Dragons, Babylon 5, Age of Conan, and the Lone Wolf setting, including material for the Lone Wolf video game by Forge Reply. He has also written several pieces of background fiction and roleplaying statistics for Star Wars, the Clone Wars.

STRETCH GOAL 0: (UPDATED!) SYSTEM DATA! £4,501 (+£1)  UNLOCKED!!

We'll add stat blocks, race and class templates, and more for Pathfinder, D&D5e, Legend (D100), and Chivalry & Sorcery in a PDF download. This will leave the book systemless for backers who prefer other rules but also cater to those running these popular systems!

STRETCH GOAL 1: MORE ART AND FULL COLOUR! £5,000 (+£500)

We'll commission more art for the book to make it more impressive and be a better illustrative example of the world of Atuannu. Also, every page will be lifted gloriously into full colour.

STRETCH GOAL 2:  FURTHER REALMS! £7,000 (+£2,500)

We'll expand the book's remit by adding more pages and giving an overview of the continents and archipeligo beyond Leviathan.

STRETCH GOALS 3: ENHANCED EDITIONS! £13,000 (+£8,500)

We'll make the book available in other languages (TBD) and will make every copy hardcover!

Further stretch goals to be determined.

Risks and challenges

With every project involving creatives there is an element of risk as real life gets in the way. About 70% of the writing is complete and art will be commissioned from artists I have worked with before and who I know are reliable. We hope to add a LOT of art but that is dependent on how many backers we can get and, as such, is dependent on how artists work and deadlines. We have proposed a generous deadline to reflect this.
