Hello! My name is Stephanie Hubbard, and I am a Documentary Director. After years of editing documentaries for other people, I recently finished DIRECTING my FIRST documentary FEATURE film which is currently on the festival circuit, and for which we have a great sales agent. Check it out at www.biblestorylandmovie.com We're getting great reviews!
Since I started taking long form comedy improv a few years ago, all I really wanted to make a documentary about was Improv.
When I started studying improv, it pretty much changed my life. I started out a tense, overly serious geek who was, well, very serious and tense, and could only use words like serious and tense, overwhelmed and stressed. And serious. But improv changed all that. Sure it was fun to be around funny people - at least once a week, but improv had all sorts of other effects as well: It pushed me to listen to people. It forced me to lose my tense and serious judgmental tendencies at the door. In short, while I got to have fun, and loosen up and "do funny" I was surprised to be confronted with the hardest spiritual challenges I'd faced in a long time.
Along the way, I both became a fan of the Team USS Rock n Roll (their performances are amazing - organic and funny - touching and real and always hilarious) as well as their student. They embodied the spirit of Improv - organic play - that really excited me about it all. Also, they were really into the science of it, and the idea of group mind (SUPER COOL!) But even though I really wanted to make a documentary about improv, I thought they were too awesome for me to ever really work with..... And Then...
Bryan (a member of USS Rock n Roll) started asking me about how USS Rock n Roll might make a Documentary. Hey wait a minute they wanted to BE in a doc about Improv - and I wanted to make one... There's Chocolate in my Peanut Butter!!!!
So an idea was born! The Improv Movie. We were joined by Documentary Producer, Jeremy Goldsheider, who just finished producing his second feature length documentary when he signed on to The IMPROV MOVIE. And Voila...so here's what we've come up with so far:
The IMPROV MOVIE will focus on the long form improv team USS Rock n Roll in their rehearsals and performances with peeks into their private lives. We’ll also find cool innovative ways for the team and coach of USS Rock n Roll to filmicly explore their process and how they do what they do. (It will be funnier and funner than this description - I promise - cause the team will be involved!) These guys are really into group mind and other scientific and creative stuff - so we'll be following up with Science Writers and Explorers likeMalcolm Gladwell (Author of “Tipping Point”) and Jonah Lehrer (Author of “Imagine”) and really dig into what happens in the brain during Improvisation.
ALSO we will track folks who’ve never done improv before and see how it improves their relationships, business success and spiritual lives.
There will also be CARTOONS!!!
The FINAL thread of the documentary will be the HISTORY and the HOW TO of long form improv. Ideally we’ll be able to get interviews from some of the great performers who came out of the improv tradition who are currently working: Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Paul Rubens, and the SCTV guys. And we’ll keep in all our “how to” tips from our principals.
What are we going to do with the money?
We are asking for $5000 to spend two weeks shooting both the team, and our experts, and hopefully folks who haven't done improv before learning and being affected. Then we'll have enough left for two weeks of editing. It won't be enough for the whole film, but it will get us started with a prototype we can show to investors, as well as take to TV or cable networks for a co-production deal and some investment.
As promised, we'll send you the result - it will be AT LEAST a half hour prototype OR maybe something different (see below) but we'll send it!!!!
BUT if enough of you sign up for downloads, we can fully fund the IMPROV MOVIE!!!! We estimate our budget at $30,000 all in. So it's up to you! If enough of you are excited about the possibilities, we might be able to go all the way! We think we can get a lot done on a small budget - BUT we need to get some shooting started!!!!! THANKS SO MUCH - we're really excited to share this amazing world with you. Best, Stephanie Hubbard Documentary Director, Jeremy Goldsheider, Producer, and USS Rock n Roll.
