You have many options for a spindle including popular handheld rotary tools from Proxxon, Dremel with other adapters (Dewalt, Bosch, Makita) coming soon. If you are looking for a more serious CNC solution then you can add the optional Stepcraft HF 500W spindle. The HF spindle has an operating range from 3,000 to 20,000 rpm and uses an air cooling system that is designed to optimize performance and keep debris and dust from getting into the bearing assembly. The Stepcraft 2 HF spindle is perfect for higher volume jobs and milling of harder materials like aluminum, brass, carbon fiber and graphite.
Stepcraft 2 when equipped with your favorite spindle (Dremel, Proxxon or Stepcraft HF 350/500) can perform advanced carving functions for your next project. Some of our packages include Vectric Cut 3D software, which allows you to take any 3D design and create carving tool paths that will turn your creation into reality. With Stepcraft 2, you have two powerful ways to perform detailed engraving on a wide variety of materials; from brass and aluminum to hard plastics and wood. With the engraver tool, you can scratch engrave into just about any surface. This is perfect for engraving ID numbers, name identifications, serial numbers, product codes, and much more. The engraver works by depressing into the material as the Stepcraft machine moves the tool around the outline of your design. The sharp point drags along the surface, thus engraving the item.
The second way to engrave is to use your favorite spindle, such as a Dremel, Proxxon or the Stepcraft HF spindle. Choose a V-point bit at 30, 60 or 90-degree angles to provide the recess that you desire for your engraving. This option gives you much more control and the ability to engrave very detailed and artistic patterns. Even a SMD circuit board is possible! You can switch to a ball nose bit to engrave with wider and rounder recesses.

In seconds you can convert the Stepcraft 2 into a highly accurate 3D printing machine. We use standard 1.75mm plastic filament, which means you have the choice of literally hundreds of types and colors to best match your project's needs. Print materials like PLA, PVA, ABS, PET, Nylon, Flexible Filament and more. The simple, straight path design of the print head gives you more accuracy and control than many 3D printers on the market. We include Repetier Host, an open source and very powerful 3D printing software solution, which has been pre-configured for the Stepcraft 2 3D Printer. You can also use other programs such as Cura, Simplify 3D and more.
Adding the ability to 3D print as well as mill and carve all in one machine is a dream for anyone in the design/maker space.
Adding the Hot Wire attachment transforms the Stepcraft 2 into a versatile foam cutter. The hot wire can cut through a large variety of foam substrates to create craft designs with your children to model airplane parts with your fellow club members.

Stepcraft 2 is easlly compatible with your MAC (running Windows) or PC and you can use your favorite drawing programs that you already know and love; programs like Sketchup, Corel Draw, Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, AutoCAD, Solidworks and much more.
Additionally, Stepcraft 2 will work with most machine control software on the market, including WinPC-NC, UCCNC and Mach 3. So you do not need to learn new software if you are already familiar with these programs.
We couple our package with Vectric's Cut2D and Cut3D. Both of these programs are easy to learn, simple to use and provide you with the flexibility to turn your design ideas into reality. Cut2D is perfect for routing, milling, pocketing and drilling. Cut3D adds functionality for 3D carving as well as more complicated parts creation.
Stepcraft 2 will come with easy to use control software that can accept a variety of file formats from HP Plotter format to DXF files. It will also accept GCode from just about any CAM software. This flexibility makes Stepcraft 2 the most versatile desktop CNC in the world.
Other machines on the market can do some, but not all, of the functions that a Stepcraft 2 system can and they cost much more. We have spent the last two years developing a desktop CNC system that has incredible speed, amazing accuracy, is flexible, versatile and can be easily learned by anyone. Risks and challenges
Since March 2013, over 2,000 Stepcraft version 1 machines have been sold throughout Europe. We have taken feedback from our customers and made over 40 refinements to make the Stepcraft 2 machines faster, more rugged, with larger workspace. The flagship machine in the Stepcraft 2 series is the new 840 with the largest workspace in its class. Now that we have perfected the Stepcraft design, it is time to offer it to the North American Market.
- Meeting Demand
To handle the increased volume of such a large market, we need to expand our production and inventory of raw materials. We've have purchased an industrial water-jet machine so we can manufacturer all of the flat metal parts in-house. We will be adding many more processes to our in-house operation, which will save costs as compared to outsourcing. Working with subcontractors for manufacturing can cause delays that are out of our control and we are moving towards reducing this.
Additionally, we set up full sales, service and support center in Torrington, CT and a satellite office in Chicago, IL. Ensuring that every customer is a happy customer is our top priority. We are building up the personnel to handle every call in a timely manner; from technical support to customer relations.
We are a very transparent company and plan to share via status updates every step of the way.

YES, we have a Laser Engraver in development and expect to launch it during the second half of 2015. Other machines on Kickstarter claim to have a laser but the long ship time for the machines means you have to wait for everything until the end of the year. We will begin shipping soon after our Kickstarter campaign ends. If you require a laser, at least you can begin using your Stepcraft 2 right away while you wait for our laser to become available.
The machine will automatically find absolute zero (0,0,0) in relation to the bed when you start the software. The machine will not run until this step is performed. You then manually move the tool (bit) to the XYZ start location for your job and then press "Zero All" to let the Stepcraft know where the home position is for your part.
YES! The design of the Stepcraft 2 machines are very rigid and will effortlessly cut virtually any materials from woods, plastics, and soft metals (like aluminum and brass).
Yes and No. Yes, you can cut these materials with a Dremel, you just need to be sure that you set the depth per pass and feed rate accordingly. The Dremel 4000 is not made for long periods of continuous use, nor is it designed to be side-loaded with a lot of force. If you require high loads or long periods of continuous cutting of these harder materials then we suggest purchasing a Stepcraft HF Spindle.
You can easily assemble and setup your machine in an afternoon (3-5 hours). We do suggest that you take the time to read the "Getting Started" manual thoroughly, as we include a lot of information to ensure your success.
If you live in Europe, we will ship from our facility in Germany or an authorized dealer, so NO, you will not have to pay VAT or export taxes.
The only difference is the size of the work area; everything else is the same between the machines.
The resolution on the machine is .0003 of an inch.
When 3D printing we suggest starting at .09 resolution. You can get resolution as good as .003 but the print will take much longer.
The X and Y dimensions corruspond with the size of the machine you choose. The Z-height (vertical) is 140mm
The repeatability has an accuracy of .04mm (.0015 inches), making this the one of the most accurate desktop CNC machines in the world.
The backlash is .08mm (.003 inches), but is compensated in the software giving a final backlash of 0.0001 inches or greater.
3000mm/min (118 inches) or 50mm/sec (2 in./sec.)
We have had success with PLA, PVA, ABS, Ninjaflex, laywood, conductive material and carbon infused PLA. We have a variety of extruder diameters from .25mm to .5mm so we can adapt to the material you wish to print. The diameter is 1.75. For most projects, we suggest using PLA filament as it is inexpensive and does not need any special processes for the bed.
The width and length of the part depend on the machine (X and Y). They would be equal to the workable area of the bed. Example - the Stepcraft 600 has a bed size of 420x600mm. The max height of the part is 140mm.
You dont lose any clearance. We designed the holder to raise the spindle motor leaving the Z clearance the same as when running the spindle without it.
What is the difference between the machines on Kickstarter and the ones on the stepcraft.us website?
The machines on Kickstarter are the new Stepcraft 2 systems which havea ll the features and improvements listed on this site. The ones on the Stepcraft.us website are the Version 1 machines which will be replaced with Stepcraft 2 once released.
