About this project
I had a dream and I chased it, the doors opened, and now we have an opportunity to share a truly inspiring story with the world: Point Hope a story of a culture, as never before seen.
We can tell a story that will better humanity by understanding our brothers and sisters across the globe.
With your help I can return to Point Hope in June and create an episode for the world to see.
Growing up in Alaska, I have been inspired by the culture of the Alaska Natives. The heritage and stories were always around when I grew up. But, I never had the opportunity to experience that culture and understand it more deeply. When I realized my passion to direct films, a desire grew in me to share this culture with the world, one day.
I left Alaska to Seattle University for film school. There, I founded an after-school filmmaking program for youth at Bailey Gatzert Elementary School: Young Visions. Also, with the help of my friends, staff, and community at Seattle University I directed an award-winning short documentary titled Mt. Zion and I directed my first feature film.
I had the privilege to visit Point Hope, AK on April 11th, 2014. I stayed with the village community. I shared my childhood dream with the leaders of the village and received blessings to return.
I was invited to return to Point Hope on June 14th and join in their sacred celebration: the Whaling Feast. This celebration will be the beginning of our episode as the voices of Point Hope guide our story.
Our goal is to honor, respect and share the truth of their culture by creating a video episode called "Point Hope". We will shine a light on the beauty of their culture, their timeless stories, and their awe-inspiring traditions that have lasted 2,500 years.
Point Hope is located on the northwestern tip of Alaska, on the coast where Belugas Whales play during the summertime (when we will be filming!) and Walrus enjoy sunbaths. There are mountains to the north and tundra surrounds the village. We will capture the natural beauty of Point Hope to compliment the beautiful truths, traditions, and culture of the Inupiat.
The Whaling Feast is a time where the village celebrates the ancient tradition of whaling. The celebration is done in traditional way with song, dance, and community.
By the time I finish this sentence there will be a new development in Motion Picture Capture, but that is good for us! We have access to cameras that can record images at the highest level. There are several incredible digital cameras we can use and I have been fortunate to operate most of them in film school.
Jeffrey Adams will be joining our production team in Point Hope, AK. Jeffrey is a fellow Seattle University alumni and an active filmmaker in the community.
Music is central to communicating our story. Our episode will feature a tasteful, poetic, and professional handling of all music and sound.
We want all of you to be our supporters and our audience so we can make an episode for you without sacrificing anything creatively or altering our relationship with the people of Point Hope.
Because of Kickstarter, we will not have to make any compromises, as so often happens in film/television, to satisfy a vision that maybe doesn't have the story's best interests in mind. With your help, we will share the final edit of the episode with the people of Point Hope and preserve the integrity of our story!
It is truly an honor to have your support. It is with your help that I will be able to fulfill this childhood ream and tell and incredible story to the world.
