We want to bring our tea to you.
After a year of hustling our tea in Bay Area cafes and restaurants, pop up events and through our online store, we have finally obtained our dream truck that will allow us to take our business to where we have always envisioned it- anywhere you want!
How it all started
We met and became good friends during college. In early 2013, after not seeing each other for two years, we planned an extensive camper van excursion to New Zealand. Soon enough, with our bags packed, we reunited at SFO and headed for the Islands.
After the long flight we both felt a desperate need for caffeine. We found a small loose leaf tea shop outside of Auckland on our second day and decided for the duration of our trip we would wean off coffee. From then on, we spent our days pulling off the road to boil water in the van and exploring the coast. We could not get steeped enough and tea became the topic of almost every conversation.
At communal campsites, late at night, we would make pots of chamomile and share hot cups of tea with others. Fellow campers began to inquire regularly about our passion for tea. It was then that we realized how we wanted to continue sharing our love for tea with others and Steep was born. Upon returning from our trip, we were both alone, living at home, with big dreams of starting a mini tea empire. In the fall of 2013, our vision materialized when we moved back to the Bay and started blending tea together in West Oakland.
How the Steep ladies see it
In a sea full of designer coffee, the extensive, versatile ways tea can be incorporated into everyday life get lost. Our question is... Why are there not more opportunities in the Bay Area to get steeped from better quality tea? The mission was clear: we needed to bring a higher quality of tea to the people with a fresh and modern approach. We started sourcing organic tea and drying local herbs, roots, and citrus. After mixing up our creative tea blends in small batches, we began to locally market and distribute our teas to the public. Steep Tea can currently be found in shops and cafes around Oakland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
A mobile tea bar
From the very beginning our dream was to have a tea-mobile. After much research, we began shopping for vehicles and finally found and purchased our Steep Jeep, Belle. With a clear vision and a working truck we are ready to take the next step. We need to outfit the truck to serve you different variations of Steep - hot tea, iced tea, tea lattes, tea soda, tea flavored soft serve, as well as loose retail tea to take home. Once were are fully operational we will be headed to farmer's markets, flea markets, private events, and local businesses, in addition to more of those pop-ups where you have grown to love Steep.
Where is the money headed?
We need your help to get Belle ready for the streets!!!
We have big plans for our little truck. We are going to start with an exterior remodel. This includes a new pop-top roof ($1,100), a generator ($1,800), and of course a fresh paint job ($900). For the inside we need all the bells and whistles: sinks ($600), a hot water tower ($400), water storage ($300), a soft serve ice cream machine ($9,000) refrigeration ($500), serving equipment ($400), shelving and flooring ($600), and a pos system ($400).
Along with the truck remodel we need to get our insurance, licensing, registration, and permits in order ($$$). We have to seek out a commercial kitchen space to store our supplies and continually replenish our inventory of tea and cups. Additionally, we hope to update our packaging and improve the look of how our product is showcased.
Our favorite aspect of using Kickstarter as our crowd funding platform is the gifts everyone receives in return for being so generous. With our original tea blends being the main focus of our swag, we have also put together a lovely selection of customized Steep Tea rewards. It's our way of saying thank you and the least we can do for your thoughtful contribution to our goal! Let's get you Steeped as soon as possible!
Exceeding our funding goal
Steep has been a two woman operation from the beginning. Starting our own business while maintaining full time jobs to pay the bills has been challenging. The hard work comes naturally to us because it is fueled by our genuine love for tea and our commitment to our vision. So please understand, this is our dream, and literally... any contribution will help us get closer to making it a reality. We wanted to be realistic with our projection but also hope viewers will understand that extra cushion will certainly help us to overcome any setbacks or bumps that we may face along the way. All money will be focused on transforming "Belle" and will help to ensure a faster, more efficient completion of our project.
If and when we do exceed our goal, we will be opening a new tier of gifts. It will include a never before released Steep Kickstarter Tea blend, a limited mini zine of tea collages and tea sayings made by us, and a Steep Jeep button pin!
The Steep Kickstarter Tour
In addition to our rewards, we will be popping up all over Oakland during our 30 day campaign to get people excited about our project! Being out and about in our community is where we feel at home. We will be serving up an assortment of hot and iced tea drinks in addition to some tasty treats. We really hope if you live in the area you will be able to make it out to one of these fun-filled Steep events.
Thank you so much for visiting our page and for your interest in our little tea company. At the end of the day we are two friends working and living together with the hope of making our city a better place to enjoy tea. It feels apparent that if you know our brand, you know us, and we can't imagine it any other way. We feel confident that we are giving people something that will not only make them feel good through-out the day but is also good for them. We are so excited about all the individuals we have met along the way and proud of all we have accomplished so far. We know that this is just the beginning of what Steep can become for us and also for our community.
We honestly would not have made it this far without the help and love of some amazing people! Thank you to all of our friends and family members for believing in us. Thanks to our homies at Coloso Coffee, Ordinaire Wine, Authentic Bagel Co, Woods Beer, and Miss Ollie's for your support. We owe endless thank you's to the artists- Will, Kyler, Jordan, Doug, and Jackson for their work. Big thanks to our mechanic Jason, We seriously love you! Finally, we would like to thank all the tea lovers out there that we have met along our journey. You continue to inspire us and give us hope for a tea filled future!
Risks and challenges
After two years of building our brand and perfecting our Steep Tea blends, we are thrilled to finally begin construction on the Steep Jeep. We built Steep Tea Co. from the ground up, and our vision for the Steep Jeep was there from the beginning - a dream that is finally coming to fruition!
We are preparing as best we can to face the many risks and challenges throughout the construction of the Steep Jeep. Thus far, we have done almost everything as a two person operation, and during this project we will begin working with third parties to plan, build, and permit the Steep Jeep. We have engaged excellent outside help to assist us as we put all of these pieces together. This collaborative process will be very fluid and may lead to obstacles and delays. But, we will remain true to our vision.
The truck is miniature, and we know that finding appropriately sized parts and materials to work with the tiny size of the shell will not be easy. It is a specialty vehicle and will need custom parts. This will take extra time and care. We are confident we can overcome these challenges with the help of our amazing support team here in Oakland. We feel blessed to be surrounded by such talented and creative people!
All in all, these risks and challenges are an integral part of this project, and we are committed to being transparent and promise to share any challenges and updates with you throughout the project. We can't do it without you!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
